Town Made Up of 600 Hot Single Women Asks Bachelors to Move In

A town in Brazil made up entirely of 20- to 35-year-old women is hoping to get some male residents [via The Mirror].

Noiva do Cordeiro, with a population of about 600 young women, was founded in the 1890s by a woman excommunicated for adultery. Other women who were excommunicated or otherwise shunned slowly found their way to the town. Since then, it's traditionally been only female residents: male children are sent off after they turn 18, and although some women live their with their husbands, the men work out of town all week and are only allowed back on weekends. Men aren't allowed to take part in running the town, and all town politics are managed by the women (who, the Mirror weirdly points out, "are renowned in the local area for being extremely attractive.")

Because of their female-only policy, the single citizens are having a really tough time finding boyfriends. Now they're hoping to find eligible bachelors that wouldn't mind moving to a town run by single women. I'm sure they'll get a few new residents within hours.

But the ladies aren't giving up their Brazilian paradise for potential new beaus. Nelma Fernandes, 23, said, "We'd like to get to know men who would leave their own lives and come to be a part of ours. But first they need to agree to do what we say and live according to our rules." Yep, OK, not a problem.

Twentysomething Women Smuggled Stolen Watches in Their Vaginas

Three women stole watches from a Las Vegas hotel room and attempted to smuggle them out in their vaginas [via Fox Las Vegas].

After talking their way into the hotel room of two gentlemen, Bryanna Warren and Trinity Kennard, both 23, and Charmella Triggs swiped their $12,000 and $4,000 watches. (Aside: Why are these two guys leaving their watches around, especially when they're worth more than pretty much anything I own?) The guys realized their watches were missing, at which point the three thieves booked it out of there. One of the men gave chase, but gave up when one of the women threatened him with a stun gun.

The escaping culprits then stuffed the timepieces into their vaginas, according to security footage. Because I guess they figured if they got stopped by police, the police would just be like, "Oh, well. I don't see the watches and I'm not about to check your vagina, so you're free to go." Also, I don't have a vagina so I'm no expert, but wouldn't all those watch links be really ... abrasive? And what are they going to do with the watches later? I feel like most pawnshops would tell them, "Sorry. I can't accept this. It smells like it's been in a vagina." I've seen Pawn Stars before. This is always a concern.

Despite a stellar plan, police caught up with the robbers while they were hailing a taxi. They're being charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit robbery. Authorities were able to recover one of the watches. :-(

Not only is it great to see the princesses in a new light, but you've got to appreciate the level of detail in each of the costumes. Cinderella has her pumpkin carriage crest on her shield. Ariel channels her inner Aquaman. Check out all of them below.

10 Naked Women Standing in the Woods, Fundraising

"When we first started this project, we had no idea it would be what it is today," says Sara (or Holli, I'm not sure which), co-founder of The Goddess Project. The project seeks to promote positive, realistic representations of women in the media.

Their first step was to release a video of 10 nude women breathing deeply in the woods back in June, but they have now broadened the mission with a Kickstarter campaign and a passionate video interview with Sara and Holli:

With the funds, they hope to produce a "grassroots documentary that will inspire women everywhere to overcome their fears and live the life of their dreams," "a film that showcases multifaceted women being open, honest, and real."

"Movies play a huge role in shaping culture and we need more films that educate and empower women rather than perpetuating negative stereotypes and limiting beliefs," Sara and Holli write on their Kickstarter page.

The women are more than halfway to their $50,000 goal. (Which they are not spending on gas! They drive a vegetable-oil-powered van. Although vegetable oil ain't free.) They're now touring the country, interviewing hundreds of women of all ages, races, shapes, and sizes about their life stories on camera, in hopes that women everywhere will get to see that they are not alone.

Yes, Men Who Objectify Women Are Also More Likely to Assault Them

It's nothing you didn't know before, but the Psychology of Women Quarterly published a study proving that men who objectify women's bodies are more likely to sexually assault them [via NY Mag].

A survey focusing on 119 males and 162 females (all in heterosexual relationships) found "men who frequently objectify their partner's bodies by excessively focusing on their appearance are more likely to feel shame about the shape and size of their partner's body which in turn is related to increased sexual pressure ... through violence and manipulation."

This pressure is often internalized, the study also showed, which leads to women "feeling shame about their bodies, a decrease in asserting themselves, and a decrease in expressing what they do and do not want to do sexually," making objectification a vicious cycle, quite literally.

Find more results of the study here.

The 10 Best Ways For Women to Pick Up Women

1. Go to a lesbian bar.
This seems pretty elementary. However, you’d be surprised how often women try to pick up other women without taking this important step. Sure, there are women who are interested in dating other women probably all around you, especially if you’re reading this at a library, gym, office, beach, concert, farmer’s market, cafĂ©, dog park, or Lilith fair.

Yet, if you’re new at this, why not make things easier on yourself? Maybe you could find an amazing new bra at the pharmacy, but wouldn’t you try the bra store first? For the record, once you’re good enough at this, you’ll be able to find a hot date at either one of those places.

2. Smile.
In reality, it’s rude and condescending, at best, to tell people to “smile.” But for the sake of your dating life, we have to bend the rules. If you see a woman you might want to talk to, smile at her first. You can usually tell whether you should approach by her reaction.

3. Don’t wink.
Do you have something in your eye? No? Because that is THE BEST assumption she will make about you based on your winking at her. Don’t wink at women. This is dating advice that doubles as life advice.

4. Fly solo.
You know why they call it a “wingman”? Because a woman doesn’t need one. Some women make the mistake of going out with a friend in order to find a date. Hanging out with your friends is great. But if you arrive at a lesbian bar WITH another woman it won’t make it impossible to find Ms. Right, but it will saddle you with the extra task of explaining that you and your friend are not a couple.

5. Be curious.
Beginning a conversation with a question isn’t just for amazing Destiny’s Child songs anymore.

6. Flirt shamelessly.
You don’t have to make a fool of yourself, but you’ll meet more ladies if you don’t embarrass too easily. That being said, there is power in subtle moves, like eye contact while she’s talking rather than, say, asking her if she fell from heaven. Think of your flirtations as a flashy conversational accessory: too little can make things boring, but too much can make you look like an idiot.

7. Don’t try to pick up women.
Try to pick up a woman. That is, decide what you are looking for before you do anything else. You don’t need a type. In fact, try not to have a type. If you are looking for someone for a lifetime, an evening, or somewhere in between then set your expectations accordingly. Of course, this answer could change throughout the night.

8. Dance.
Ask her to dance. Unless you hate dancing, but if you hate dancing because you’re slightly embarrassed about what you think you look like dancing, get over it. No one cares. Someone genuinely having fun is pretty irresistible and it’s a great excuse to get closer.

9. Be honest.
If you’re slightly nervous, tell her. She might think it’s cool that she makes you a little tongue-tied. If you think she looks great, tell her that too. Moderation is key though. Don’t discuss your past relationships or that one time you laughed so hard you peed a little.

10. Make a move.
An epidemic among women who are trying to date other women is timidity. If you’re having fun with her during all the dancing and conversing, take action. Ask her out, ask for her number, ask if you can kiss her — be brave and you will be rewarded.

Also, don’t be deterred by rejection. Rejection is its own reward because it gives you character and a great excuse to listen to Aaliyah’s “Try Again.” If you’re smart, you’ll listen to it on the dance floor while smiling at someone new.

Why Women Shouldn't Be Freaked Out by Uncircumcised Penises

One day at work, a coworker was freaking out about a sexual encounter she had had with a man the night before.

“You have to hear this story,” another girl said to me when I walked into their office.

“What happened?” I asked.

“Oh my god,” she said, visibly shaken, eyes wide, as she closed the office door. “He was uncircumcised.”

Huh?

“I’m not inexperienced,” she continued. “But I’ve never seen that before. It was alarming.”

All I could think was, what the hell is the problem?

Though I am currently committed to a man who is circumcised, I spent a year in a serious relationship with a man who was not. While I do remember that this was something I talked to my friends about and that it was unusual (all other men I had had sexual relationships with were circumcised) I do not remember having a visceral reaction of OMG WTF CANNOT DO THIS. What I remember most of all was that I was so attracted to him that I just did not care. So his equipment was a little different? It in no way affected how hot he was or how great the sex we had was. And guess what, girls? Statistics suggest fewer men are getting circumcised, so you're increasingly likely to encounter an uncircumcised penis if you haven't yet.

Here’s the difference between an uncircumcised penis and a circumcised one: a circumcised penis has had its foreskin removed, and uncircumcised one hasn’t. So an uncircumcised penis has what looks like a cylinder of skin enveloping the head. To access the head — the most sensitive part of the penis — you simply roll the skin down. Voila: there you have the penis most American women are used to working with.

Sex with an uncircumcised penis is as awkward as you make it. If you see one, freak out, recoil in horror, halt all sexual activity, and scuttle your office friends into a room the next day so you can confirm that you should, in fact, be freaked out by it, of course you’re going to feel uncomfortable about uncircumcised penises. If you can resist possibly insulting your sexual partner by freaking out, remember why you’re having sex with him in the first place (presumably, you find him hot enough to want to bone). If you feel really confused by his foreskin, ask him what feels good. Chances are once he tells you, it won’t feel like a discussion topic and the sex won’t go from, well, sex to Uncircumcised Sex I Have to Tell Everyone About.

Ultimately, sex with an uncircumcised man does not taste or feel or smell any different for a woman. Let me disabuse you of the notion that uncircumcised penises are smellier or dirtier than circumcised ones (if they are at all, that says more about the dude's bathing habits than presence or lack of foreskin). You (or your partner) just need to push that little bit of skin back. I fail to see why this is so scary. If you truly love a person and find him sexy, you won’t care if he has a little extra skin around his penis where your previous sexual partners have not.

The sex I had with my uncircumcised boyfriend was some of the best I had ever had. Nowhere in my memories of our sexual experiences do I think, “Well, if he was circumcised that would have all been a lot better.” Ladies, I’m here to tell you: it really does not matter whether a guy is circumcised or not. If you like him and want to do it with him, you will not care about the presence of foreskin. The sex will be hot with it or without it.

Let me give you an example: my uncircumcised ex is from a foreign country. We ended up traveling through his home country together for ten days. When I was listening to him speak in his native language (the accent and foreign-ness was always a huge turn-on), spending day after day touring beautiful places with him and not being able to wait to get home to get it on basically all the time, I thought about his foreskin not at all. When we got back to his apartment one day and ended up having sex in the living room, him on the couch, me propped up on the coffee table, and all I could think about was how I’d never been more attracted to anyone ever than in that moment, I was not repulsed by or even remotely thinking about his foreskin.

We’re doing each other a disservice by acting terrified of uncircumcised penises. All you do when you freak out about foreskin in front of your friends is encourage them to freak out about foreskin when they encounter it. And if it’s attached to a man you’re crazy about (or just wildly attracted to), you’re not going to even think about it, much less mind it.

A penis is a penis. If it has a foreskin, get over it. Remember: the most important part of any foreskin is who it’s attracted to.

Do Women Who See Their Ultrasounds Decide Against Abortion?

In the movie Juno, Ellen Page's pregnant teen character is about to walk into the abortion clinic when a protestor outside yells "Your baby has fingernails!" Ultimately, the remark makes her decide to keep it. Although this (hopefully) wasn't Diablo Cody and co.'s intention, pro-life legislature has followed that example. Currently, seven states require women seeking abortions to get ultrasounds before going through with it, and three states mandate that the doctor must show and describe the ultrasound to the woman.

The psychological motivation behind this is the theory that looking at the ultrasound will cause unconscious "fetal bonding" for the mother and make her less likely to abort — however, the original study that discovered this only looked at women who wanted the baby in the first place. So when it comes to abortion-seeking women, how well does this work?

Slate reports that a new study, which examined 15,000 patient records at an L.A. abortion care provider has the answer, and it's honestly not surprising. Women were asked how confident they were in choosing abortion and were placed into two categories: High decision certainty and low-to-medium decision certainty (the latter category only 7.4 percent women fell into). Forty-two point five percent of the whole group opted to see their ultrasounds beforehand, and it's true that their ultimate rate of abortion, at 98.4 percent, was lower than the women who opted not to, at 99 percent.

However, the women who looked at the ultrasounds and opted not to go through with it were women who already had the low-to-medium decision certainty — they were less confident that this was the option for them, right from the jump. In other words, the only women changing their minds after seeing the ultrasounds weren't sure anyway. So the pro-life movement should take note: Women who are positive that abortion is right for them won't be fazed by their manipulative tactics.

Are We Seriously Still Judging Women Who Want to Get Married?

Hairpin writer Jia Tolentino has a bone to pick with the year 2013, for it was the year she attended 18 weddings. She writes that "18 weddings is so many weddings that the words start to shift in meaning. Eighteen is now an adjective that means too many. Wedding, a noun that means too much." What follows is a self-indulgent critique of the institution of marriage, the tradition of weddings, and the women who want to become wives. Though it's difficult to draw one conclusion from her arguments, which make hairpin (yes, went there) turns at nearly every paragraph, there is this:

18 women, 18 brides. 18 capable, wonderful, educated, privileged, professional, socially aware female humans enthusiastically plunging into an institution that holds about as much interest for me as a bag of playground rocks (some! Not much, though) and whose associated totems have historically represented the diminishment and commodification of a gender that needs to get more of either as much as we need a swift punch in the face. I understand easily why a man would want a wife; it's harder to for me to grasp why a woman would want to be one. The language and semiotics of marriage are terrible: we’re still proposed to, our cervical fealty insured by a ring, our fathers give us away to our fuck buddies, we erase and replace our own names. The preferred aesthetic for "bride" is still very close to that of "princess," a role so passive and empty that there's not even anything there to subvert.

I'm getting married next summer. According to Tolentino, this means I am diminishing myself as a woman, and turning myself into someone who can be bought with a diamond ring. But here's the thing: I'm not marrying my fiance because he gave me a ring or because I want to dress and act like a thoughtless, trussed-up princess for a day. I'm marrying him because marriage is a meaningful and incredibly worthwhile demonstration of our love for one another. It is also a demonstration of our desire to live out our lives and raise children together. The wedding that kicks it off allows us to celebrate our union with our closest friends and family — something that's as important to many of our loved ones as it is to us. Of course we want to show our guests a nice weekend that shows how much we care about not only each other, but also them.

But what really troubles me about Tolentino's post is that to assume marriage represents societal repression is to assume a pervasive helplessness among women. Marriage is no longer a retro institution that leaves women sitting around doing housework and feeding the children while a man goes off and earns all the money and enjoys all the world's viable intellectual stimulation. Women are anything but feeble Betty Drapers these days. We may not be fully equal to men in some unfortunate ways (we still don't earn a full dollar to theirs), but we certainly haven't given up the fight and are even making awesome strides: women now earn more college degrees than men and are close to overtaking men as the primary breadwinners in their households. My fiance and I are equals in our relationship, and that won't disappear the second we say "I do." I work just as much as does, and I know that when we have children, he'll be an equal caretaker in the relationship. When faced with choosing a city to live in after he finished graduate school, we picked New York because it offers the best opportunities for my career.

I have to wonder how Tolentino would respond to gay activists who have been fighting for decades for this country to give them the same legal recognition as heterosexual couples, or who rush to the steps of city hall the moment their state legalizes gay marriage. Marriage is many things: it is work, it is commitment, it is even a tax break. But most important, it's one way to make a life more meaningful.

The choice to marry and have a fun traditional wedding to inaugurate it hardly undoes the work of the feminist or post-feminist movements. Indeed, I would argue that it strengthens it — women marrying today know that marriage won't subvert them. It's dangerous to turn a fear of commitment into an argument that it does.

Marine Corps Quietly Postpones Fitness Requirement for Women

In November 2012 the Marine Corps announced that, starting in early 2014, female Marine recruits would have to be able to do three pull-ups in order to graduate, whereas before they just had to do the flexed arm hang. Now NPR reports that this requirement has been postponed because 55 percent of female recruits tested at the end of boot camp weren't able to complete it. This delay was actually announced in November, but the Marine Corps didn't make a big deal about it, simply mentioning it in an episode of "The Corps Report."

Women will be allowed to serve in combat units by 2016, and retired Army lieutenant colonel Robert Maginnis told NPR that it will be a problem if they aren't strong enough. "Young women, in spite of all the training and all the best intentions, are not going to be the equal of young men in terms of upper body strength," he said. "You've got to have a lot of upper body strength to lift the stuff."

The Marines Corps is encouraging female recruits to continue training as if the pull-up requirement will be in effect, and some say it's just a matter of working toward that goal. As Greg Jacob, the policy director of the Service Women's Action Network and a former commander at a training school, told the New York Times in February, “I saw women who could only do one or two pull-ups be able to bust out, over the course of four or five months, eight pull-ups. And that was because they were training to that standard.”

24 Problems All Curly-Haired Women Have

1. Your hair takes a full workday to dry after a morning shower and you look like a wet sheepdog who files invoices. Your co-workers are like, "What a talented sheepdog! It can use Microsoft Excel and everything!"

2. When you’re trying to blowdry your hair and you can’t find the diffuser (e.g. the attachment that makes you not look like a human Christmas tree.) I am convinced that lost diffusers end up on Diffuser Island, a remote paradise where diffusers go just to fuck with us.

3. On Days 2 – 4 after you wash your hair, it's as awesome as Julia Roberts’ in My Best Friend’s Wedding, but that is a very narrow window. On Day 1, you look like Shirley Temple. Clean curls are the bounciest, tightest, and frankly, least-flattering (for some of us) iteration possible.

4. On Day 5, you look like a troll who sleeps under a bridge. Not even dry shampoo can save you now. You have to take a spritz bottle of water and do your best... in other words, another 20 minutes of your morning routine.

5. Your natural hair on a good day looks like every pre-makeover hairstyle in a romantic comedy.

Or that guy from Workaholics.

5. The various opinions on how often to wash your hair are confusing. Some hairstylists say you should only use shampoo once a week. Others say a few times a day. Straight-haired people give you side-eye when you mention you don’t wash your hair as often as they do. (Go to hell.) What to do?!

6. To go sulfate-free or to stay with regular shampoo? My guess is the majority of straight-haired women don’t even know what sulfate-free shampoo is.

7. Topknots take more work than they should, otherwise they look weird. There is a fine line between “high-fashion topknot” and “I forgot to take my hair down from this awkward bun I do before washing my face.”

8. You can’t wash your hair and then sleep on it. Unless “stuck your head in an electrical socket” is a prominent model-hairstyle in your Delia*s catalogue. (It’s not.)

9. The curly-hair specialty products that actually make your hair sane are three times more expensive than regular products. And you either use them up immediately or use them once, realize they’re not effective, and throw them under the sink where you keep your failed-products graveyard.

10. You go to a friends’ house and forget your hair accoutrements, and you are totally fucked. Sorry, Sleek-Haired Perfect Unicorn Friend, I can’t use your usual drugstore hair products. Why? Because I’ll end up looking like Howard Stern, that’s why.

11. People will refer to your "fro" as if that's appropriate. Guys. We have to be best friends before — if ever — you call my hair a "Jew 'fro" and I manage to abstain from smacking you upside the head. Not okay.

12. You have to be super-careful about who you go to for cuts. Otherwise you end up with the patented triangle shape. Not cute.

13. Layers grow out weird. At the time, they thin your hair out in a good way, but a few months later, you’ve got two layers that are very clearly defined and very different lengths. Try braiding that shit. Go ahead. Try it. I did it this morning, and now I have to go to therapy.

14. You have like, three hairstyle options. You know those awesome hair tutorials on sites like ours? Yeah. Not really possible for us curly-haired women to do about 90 percent of the time. Step 1 is always "Brush it." Yeah, not gonna happen.

15. Speaking of those tutorials, they always call wavy hair “curly.” It’s not "Three Awesome Workplace Styles For Curly Hair" if it’s a model with pin-straight hair that you loosely curled like, half of. I wasn't born yesterday.

16. Girls with easy, beautiful waves whose hair is perfectly straight on top are always trying to commiserate. "Oh my God, my hair is sooooo crazy when it’s natural." And one day they don't have time to flat-iron it and it's actually like:

And you're like:

17. People assume you’re a certain kind of person when you have curly hair. A free spirit who plays the guitar in coffee shops and wears long, dangly dream-catcher earrings. A vegan. I am not a free spirit, I am VERY trapped. And I also eat meat, thanks.

18. That mixed feeling you have when people compliment you on your temporarily-straightened hair. You say: "Thanks!" You think: Does this mean I look better with straight hair? I do feel more confident this way but is that just because straight hair is preferred by society? Should I cave in and straighten it all the time? Do people like me better when I’m not myself???

19. Every time you have an important event, you obsess over the above. First date? Job interview? Do you straighten it and then roll up to the second date/follow-up interview curly? Does it even matter to anyone but you?

20. Guys try to run their fingers through your hair and immediately get caught in tangles. Uh, #bornthisway?

21. You wake up the next morning and don't look subtly sex-disheveled and instantly adorable. Morning-after drunk sex hair for curly-haired women is not good. You better sneak into his bathroom before he gets up and wonders where the cute girl went and how the stray caribou found its way into the bed.

22. You're the only woman who leaves her hair naturally curly at work, and it's lonely. :|

16 Ways Twentysomething Women Rationalize Spending Money

1. This is basically the price of my work expenses! I know I haven't even filled out my reimbursement form and I might not be able to find a third of my receipts but once I finally get around to filing that and getting my check back it will more than make up for the price of this leather T-shirt that I really need since that girl at the bar last night looked so good in hers.

2. Expense reimbursement checks are practically BONUSES. This feels like money I earned instead of money I already spent therefore I absolutely deserve those silver shoe booties Stacy said looked super-good on me. Stacy has the best taste.

3. I spent all that money to come on this tropical vacation already so what's another $50 on a Ceasar salad and fries? I came here to enjoy myself, not spend my time searching for reasonably priced nachos. Every proper yuppie knows that sitting next to a pool causes the price of everything to increase four fold. It's just a fact of life.

4. I already spent $60 on three daquiris yesterday. What's another $18 mai tai at this point? I pay $2 extra for egg white-only omelettes all the time.

5. Spending a week at my parents' house saved me SO much money. That's a full week's worth of eating out and apartment utilities that I don't have to pay for. I hope Stacy comes to Zara with me after brunch!

6. Ugh I had the WORST day. I can't believe how stupid that new department head Donna is. I can't wait to quit and work in a place where my brilliance is actually appreciated and — ooh Urban Outfitters. I'll just zip through — I deserve a new freakum dress after the shitty day I had. Donna wishes she had the body to pull this off.

7. I'm so excited about my new [apartment/job/promotion]! I better get a new [coffee table/shift dress/Theory blouse] since I'm most definitely not in a position to look like a shabby Sharon anymore. #MovingOnUp

8. I am so beyond stressed out. I can't do this anymore. Where's the number for Bliss, let's see here — "Hello? Hi, I need to come in for a massage this evening. Yes, 7 p.m. sounds good. You know I was thinking of the 60-minute deep tissue but if you have 75 minutes available… Mm hm, it's a Visa —"

9. Just another $30 for a paraffin foot wrap? OK! Why not? I've come this far. This massage is already so beyond worth the $200 I'm spending on it! I deserve it after the week I've had.

10. Maybe I should just go to the nice nail salon for a change. I mean, I don't have kids, I'm not married. Now is the time in my life when I can really afford to treat myself.

11. Being single just costs money. If you're going to go out to bars to try to meet potential mates you're going to have to spend $12 on one cosmopolitan sometimes! That's just how it goes. You can't meet people curled up in bed with Hulu Plus!

12. These shoes were not made for public transit. These are cab to curb shoes and that is it. Shit, is it raining? Fuck it, I'll just order an Uber.

13. Why is it that the only food I ever have in my apartment is frozen bread and Annie's bunny pasta. If I have another carb-only meal I'm going to turn into a churro. I better order that $16 salmon salad that's really good and filling and never makes me feel fat.

14. I would go to the gym so much more often if I had awesome neon-accented workout clothes. Besides, those Lululemon leggings make your thighs look firm instead of jiggly so I can go to aerobics class without feeling weird about my body. Oh, it's 10 percent off the second pair today only? I may as well get two.

15. Omigod omigod Gilt only has one left in my size! If I don't get that blazer right now I'll never find it in my size again. Added to cart, there. Omigod omigod! I only have six minutes left to purchase! I better get my credit card so I can enter everything in before I lose the last small.

16. Man, this blazer is kind of disappointing-looking on me. But returning it is like sooooo not happening #lazy #ihatemail. I'll just keep it.

Top 8 Ways Young Women Benefit From Obamacare

You've heard people arguing about Obamacare (officially known as The Affordable Care Act or ACA) for months... but you may have tuned it all out, because it’s all so confusing and you don’t even know how—or if—it affects you. But starting in 2014, the law will require most people to buy insurance or risk paying a $95 fine, so now’s the time to pay attention. And the fact is, you may discover that there are lots of benefits you’ll be able to take advantage of that you couldn’t before. Here's a quick list of what’s great about the ACA, especially for young women:

1. You can stay on your parents’ health policy until you turn 26. Previously, most insurers did not allow young adults beyond age 21 to stay on their parents’ policies. More than 3 million young adults have gained coverage since this provision went into effect in 2010. Your parents will be charged the same rates as when you were younger. You can be covered by their policy even if you’re married, but the coverage won’t extend to your spouse.

2. You’re entitled to free preventive care, including birth control. Since 2012, nearly 30 million women have benefitted from free preventive services including checkups, screenings for diabetes and HIV, contraceptives and family planning counseling. The law requires plans to cover all FDA-approved birth control methods without co-pays. This includes pills, the Ring, the Patch, injectables (the Shot), implants, intrauterine devices (IUDs), and sterilization procedures. Plans must cover without cost sharing all brand name contraceptives without generic equivalents or where the generic equivalent is medically inappropriate for a woman. Also, certain religious employers are exempt from the birth control requirement.

3. You may be eligible for government discounts on insurance. Starting October 1, new online health insurance exchanges will go live in every state, selling coverage that will take effect January 1, 2014. The exchanges will allow you to compare prices and benefits to find an insurance plan you can afford that fits your needs; if you still feel you can’t afford it, you can find out whether you’re entitled to a federal tax credit based on your income. The lower your income, the higher the tax credit. You can get the discount at the time you enroll. Find information on your state exchange here.

4. You’ll have maternity coverage, no matter what. You may not know this but only about 12 percent of health plans sold on the individual market currently include coverage for maternity, according to Judy Waxman of the National Women’s Law Center. But starting next year, all individual health plans will have to include 10 essential health benefits including maternity care, as well as hospitalization, prescription drugs, mental health services and preventive services.

5. You can’t be charged more than a guy. In most states, insurers are currently allowed to charge women more than men for individual coverage. According to the National Women’s Law Center, in 30 percent of cases, nonsmoking women were charged more than men who smoked. Such gender rating will be outlawed starting next year.

6. You can’t be rejected for having a “pre-existing condition.” Today, insurers can deny you health insurance if you have a chronic condition such as asthma or diabetes (in which case you’re considered a health risk); if they do accept you regardless of these conditions, they can still charge you more for coverage. But starting next year it will be illegal for them to penalize you this way; health premiums may vary based on three factors only: age, where you live, and whether you’re a smoker.

7. If you are an individual who makes under $16,000 a year, you may be eligible for Medicaid. Medicaid is the state-federal health insurance program for the poor, and it’s being expanded by the law to those whose annual income is under the federal poverty level. However, because the Supreme Court ruled that the expansion is optional for states, only about half of them are participating. Check out this infographic to see if yours is one of them.

8. If you’re a breastfeeding mom, you can pump at work more comfortably. Since 2011, the law has required employers to provide a “reasonable break time” and a private place (not a bathroom) for you to pump breast milk during the workday. The law also requires health plans to cover the costs of breastfeeding equipment and breastfeeding counseling without a copay. One final note: not everyone will see immediate coverage changes; many of you who get your insurance through your job are in “grandfathered” plans, which are exempt from some of the rules. Ask your company’s health benefits administrator if this is the case for you.

Correction: This post has been updated to specify which forms of birth control Obamacare will cover without co-pays.

The Bizarre and Devious Tricks Men Use to Pick Up Women

How much would you pay for three hours of private tutelage with Justin Wayne, Dating Coach?

Oh, you thought that Bikram Zumba Cycle instructor worked you hard? That’s child’s play!

You paid for three hours, and you’re not leaving until you’re having sex with a stranger on top of the heirloom tomato cart at the local farmer's market.

I'm only kinda kidding.

Justin Wayne (not his real name) grew up in the Caribbean, where the community was so small you couldn't hit on women without earning a reputation. He moved to New York, where you can act like a homeless guy one day and put on a business suit the next day, and no one will know (his analogy). He started sleeping with hundreds of women, including a few unnamed celebrities, and people started asking for advice. It quickly turned into a flourishing business that now charges upwards of $1000 for a few hours of coaching.

He says many of his clients are in their twenties and thirties, that a lot of them are perfectly cool dudes who, for whatever reason, just aren't having the success that they would like. Justin says he differentiates himself because many of his clients are guys who have dated and slept with 9s and 10s (again, his words) but are looking to become more consistent in their approach of women.

So, if you pay $1,000+ for a session with Justin, what do you get? Justin will take you to a public place (like, yes, the local farmer's market), where he will not let you even begin the coaching session until you have completed at least five “warm-ups.” “Warm-ups” is Justin’s term for interactions with a female stranger that aren’t intended to culminate in a “result.” (Terminology often begets more terminology, I quickly found out.) A “result” can be anything from a phone number to a kiss to simply a pleasant conversation.

After warm-ups, you’ll move onto “Escalation Drills,” or interactions with a female that include flirting, which manifests itself in some form of touching.

I met Justin’s client for the day, whom we’ll call Alec. Alec just went through a tough break-up, so to help him get through his funk, he shelled out “over a thousand dollars.”

In my head, I actually envisioned it went for $1,001, as if some loser named Billy bid a cool thou for Justin’s services on The Price is Right, and then Alec swooped in, and was all, “Eff that! I’m using the PIR Asshole Strategy!”

Anyway, Alec is a cool dude. When he met me, he said, “Hey, what’s up, man, I’m Alec.” He had that cool hair where it’s sort of a Mohawk but kind of isn’t. He did not seem socially inept by any standard.

So why did this perfectly ept dude need to pay someone to help him meet ladies?

The session started, and I had my answer soon enough.

Justin told Alec to begin his warm-ups, and Alec’s face contorted into a terrified expression I hadn’t seen since Patrick Wilson in The Conjuring.

OK, I only saw the trailer. That movie looked terrifying.

But Mr. Wilson himself would have commended Alec for his brilliant portrayal of a guy who was clearly about to have a nervous breakdown. Anyone within 100 feet could sense that this guy wanted nothing more than to crawl into a hole filled comfort food, pornography (this hole has great wi-fi), and a signed affidavit claiming he’d never have to do this exercise again.

As a reminder: the goal of the exercise was to say “Hello” to someone.

Justin took mercy on Alec and joined him. Holy crap he was good at this. One particularly effective opening line he used was: “Excuse me, do you know where I can get a really fresh fruit juice around here? Like, really fresh?”

The woman paused to think about it. If Justin were a burglar, that tiny pause was her doggie door. Just enough room to squeeze in and start chatting her up.

I couldn’t believe what I was watching. This is New York City. You can’t make it from 42nd Street to 42nd-and-a-half Street without being asked “Wanna see a comedy show?” two hundred times. People never stop and talk to someone.

Woman after woman. Doggie door after doggie door.

Justin then demonstrated another daring tactic: complimenting a woman’s scarf. Revolutionary? Not on its own. But try it on a woman who isn’t wearing a scarf.

Is that idiotic? Is it borderline genius? I don’t know, but goddammit it worked.

“What? I’m not even wearing a scarf!” Boom. Two-second window. Bow wow.

Justin and his team have spent years tracking the stats on every single move in order to determine which one(s) will lead to the greatest success rates.

Success for a man, per Justin Wayne, means sex.

“The only thing that moves the world is science,” Justin mused. “Sure, there’s love, but from a physical view, it’s science. Statistics.”

The most successful physical move he showed me was the “Stop-Point.” You tap a woman on the shoulder while pointing in the opposite direction. She is infinitely more likely pause and look where you’re pointing.

“It doesn’t even matter what you say — you’ve got her attention,” Justin said of the Stop Point. “Then you can be like, ‘Hey, you look like you’ve got an artsy vibe…’”

It’s so simple! Yet it feels a bit devious and manipulative.

“I am morally neutral,” Justin explained. “As long as the guy is not lying about who he really is.”

It’s good advice that Justin himself follows very closely. He’s like the Heisenberg of dating — he plays by his own rules and he’s got a dope pseudonym.

After Justin showed Alec these seemingly simple moves, it was the student’s turn to get behind the wheel. The word “yikes” came to mind several times.

It was like watching the football team put on blonde wigs and skirts to cheer at the Powderpuff Game. Technically, they are doing cheerleader moves, but it’s a fumbling mess and no one feels good about themselves while bearing witness to it.

One of Justin’s top assistant coaches, Bruce, took over Alec’s lesson. All coaches for Justin Wayne Dating are given their own Wayne family coaching pseudonyms, making this guy Bruce Wayne. Sadly, he was not wearing head to toe black leather.

Once Justin and I were alone (ooh-la-la), he explained his philosophies on dating: a woman is judged about 70% on her looks, and 30% on her personality/intangibles; men are judged via a 70-30 split the other way.

“Equal attracts equal,” he told me. “But women want to date someone from their tribe. A girl would prefer to date a 6 or a 7 from her social circle over a 10 from the street.”

That’s why so many of his coaching sessions are “Stranger Approach.” According to Justin’s data, it’s ten times more difficult than approaching a woman who is already in your social circle.

Kenyan marathoners train at altitude. Serious daters hit on strangers.

Conspiracy theory alert!

Justin and I curtailed our chat in order to check in on Alec. I started to suspect that Alec was a very convincing actor, hired to demonstrate the efficacy of the program.

A lost deer in the forest of New York a mere 30 minutes ago, Alec was suavely chatting up a very attractive female. Way to go, Alec! (And way to go, Talent Agency That Secretly Cast Alec!)

“Well,” he hedged after the woman walked away, “I only got her email address. I’m actually deleting it right now.”

Ummm. What?

“That’s a baller move, deleting it,” Bruce affirmed. “Emails don’t fucking matter.”

He says this with such authority that I’m inclined to believe him. Statistics can be a bitch.

21 Women Share: What Boosted My Sex Drive

1-"The Magic Bullet—the sex toy, not the blender. It always helps get me off, and bringing it into my bedroom jam made me more excited for sex in general."—Melissa F.

2-"Four words, one man: Tony Goldwyn on Scandal. No coincidence that soon after I became obsessed with the show, I also got pregnant." — Nicole B.

3-"Working out and getting fit always makes a big difference. The better I feel about myself, and the more endorphins in the mix, the more sex I want." —Madeline F.

4-"Swimming together! You're basically naked and slithering around in the water...it's as close as you can come to doing it while still being in public. Much has been said about vacation sex, but the hottest thing you can do on vacay is hop in the hotel pool."—Rachel T.

5-"The little, simple things: Crisp, clean linens and shaved legs. Preferably simultaneously." —Jo D.

6-"The old standby: Baby oil as lube."— Elizabeth R.

7-"Online porn! It’s not just for guys."—Larissa K.

8-"Going off the pill. I think being on the pill killed my sex drive a bit but when I went off it I was raring to go again."—Lisa V.

9-"Sound clips are an underutilized sexting format! I highly recommend adding them to the mix."—Bea L.

10-"My boyfriend has always enjoyed serenading me with his ukulele (which is cute!), but one day he was, like, 'Oh by the way, did you know that I play the electric guitar?' Um, no! Where has that been all my life? Done and DONE." — Missy J.

11-“Yoga boosted my sex drive. Getting all sweaty next to a really handsome man in class was surprisingly a turn on. All that breathing and stretching and accidentally bumping them added a sexual charge to the experience that I'd been missing. Especially when I'm not seeing anyone, getting all physical with a bunch of strangers reminds me that I do actually have blood pumping through my veins.” —Nicola D.

12-“David Beckham's half naked boxer brief H&M ad. The one with him running after a car. His abs, his butt...I still touch myself after I watch it. Available on YouTube!”—Nina C.

13-“Like any normal woman, chocolate gets me going — and so do strawberries. If I have a combo of the two, I will not leave my bed for the next 3 days.”—Lily S.

14-“A couple years ago, I switched my birth control to one with a super high concentration of androgen (synthetic testosterone). My back broke out like crazy, but I wanted to have sex pretty much every second of the day...which was a bit counterintuitive because who wants to get busy with someone who has bacne? I eventually switched back because the breakouts were so bad...but the change to my sex drive was pretty incredible.”—Kara V.

15-“Taking pics of yourself naked just to have on file and to discover what angles and positions like yourself in. But that’s just me.” — Lila A.

16-"Celebrity movie porn: Bryan Greenberg in Prime, Oliver Martinez in Unfaithful, Ryan Gosling in The Notebook, and Ryan Phillippe in Cruel Intentions."—Leah T.

17-"Sexting."—Valerie R.

18-"Smart people/sexy authors like Steven Johnson and David Baldacci."—Brooke J.

19-“So cheesy...but take me to a Broadway show or put on some Frank Sinatra. A man who can sing, dance, and seduce women while doing it gets me going. To this end, Justin Timberlake will also work."— Shawn B.

21-“Cooking dinner with a glass of red wine and some help from a man is a big turn-on. The intimacy of doing that together as opposed to being in a crowded restaurant… it makes it feel like it’s all leading up to great sex.” — Kate S.

Study: There's a Wage Gap Because Women Choose Low-Paying Jobs

Okay, help us out here. We’re not sure if this is good news or just another BS attempt from anti-Lean In-ers to convince us ladies that we are on the same professional playing field as our lovely male counterparts. A new survey from PayScale (via The Atlantic) insists that the ol’ “women make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes” proclamation—a defense that we clutch onto and spew out whenever a misogynistic d-bag laughs at our jobs (no, just me?)—is utterly untrue.

Sure, there’s a wage gap when you look at salaries across the board, the peeps behind the survey say, but when you compare salaries between men and women with equal levels of education and experience, same responsibilities, similar company size, and other constraints, the ratio diminishes so drastically, it’s barely existent. So…WTH is really happening?

This research claims that the real issue isn’t that women are simply paid less, it’s that women work in careers that pay less overall, like health care versus engineering. In fact, nine of the 10 highest-paying jobs on PayScale’s list were held mostly by men, while nine of the 10 lowest-paying jobs were majority female. I guess that explains why you never hear a guy say, “Oh, I’m just going to marry a rich girl.” Sigh. This being said, we think there's more contributing to the gender gap than just women choosing lower-paying gigs. Like gender discrimination, hi?

The good news? With women earning more bachelor’s degrees these days and the recent push toward STEM careers, things could—and hopefully will—change. P.S. If you’re still grazing the great abyss trying to figure out your future, become a dental hygienist: According to the survey, it pays to be a lady.
