Yep, This Happened: Man Threatens Another Man With a Giant Dildo

Sometimes we read a news story that's just so unbelievable, and so freaking crazy, that we are honestly speechless.

Luckily, this one pretty much speaks for itself: Basically, some dude's car was in the shop when it got repossessed (he defaulted on his payments). Pissed off that he lost his car, the guy blamed the mechanic and according to court documents, "entered the workshop in an intimidating manner with a large black dildo in his right hand, which he was smacking into his left hand continually in an aggressive and threatening manner."

Yes, you read that right: The man used a fake penis to try to scare the mechanic into giving him money. (Apparently we don't need that can of mace anymore: We'll just keep our biggest, most intimidating dildo on hand in case we need some muscle in a tough situation.)

Though, one wonders: Why did this dude choose a sex toy as an intimating tool as opposed to, say, a bat, a pipe, or another oblong, weapon-like object? While what he did was totally, totally wrong, we do have to admire his creativity.

Former Steubenville NAACP President: Yet Another Rape Denier

While the highly publicized Steubenville trial ended with high school jocks Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond being convicted of the rape of a blacked-out 16-year-old girl, rape deniers (both the outright and the more subtle, insidious kind) have been coming out of the woodwork to defend the boys. And darn if they don't come from the most unlikely places. First CNN, now the NAACP. No wonder sexual assault is an epidemic in America.

Steubenville's former NAACP president Royal Mayo spoke to the International Business Times about his doubts regarding the fairness of the verdict and whether the "alleged victim" (his words) had, in fact, simply had drunk but consentual sex. Why?

"They’re alleging she got raped; she’s acknowledging that she wanted to leave with Trent. Her friends say she pushed them away as she went and got into the car, twice telling them, ‘I know what I’m doing; I’m going with Trent.’

How could I have forgotten! She got in a car. And we all know any woman who gets into any car, ever, is basically just asking for sexual assault. I mean, that's just science. What else?

"She said her mother brought her to the party, at 3 o'clock, with a bottle of vodka. Where did you get it, young lady? You brought it from home? Where’d you get it? You came to the party with your mother."

Yeah, "young lady," how dare you bring alcohol to a party like literally any human being would do without being aware that procuring a bottle of vodka is a green light for rape? Once again, it's a shining testament to the power of human denial that it's somehow always the victim's fault for quote-unquote "putting herself in the situaton," whatever that may be. If a man handcuffed a woman in a basement and raped her for a month, we'd somehow find a way to blame her for not trying harder to get out of the cuffs.

Hey! Here's a thing. It's impossible to "put yourself in a situation" to get raped, because that is literally contradicting the very definition of rape. Chew on that.

Mayo adds: “Back in August, when the rumors first started going around, I talked to Ma’lik, and he said, ‘No, Mr. Mayo, we didn’t do anything to that girl. I don’t know what these rumors are; I don’t understand it.’” [...] “You hear local people saying, ‘We got this out of the way, let us just heal, let the community start to heal.’ It’s like these two were sacrificed, the poor black kid and the white kid who is from the next county, in the next town over, who were sacrificed over all the other dirt and corruption that would be uncovered if you come into Steubenville."

However, the NAACP itself, which is sane, hardly gets behind Mayo's comments. They released the following statement, via HuffPo:

The NAACP abhors the remarks attributed to Royal Mayo regarding the rape victim in the Steubenville. The remarks are Mayo’s own, and do not reflect the position of the NAACP and its membership. Rape is a despicable crime of violence. The NAACP understands that comments that blame victims for the actions of their attackers contribute to and perpetuate a culture of acquiescence to rape. The NAACP advocates strongly for a society where victims of rape and sexual assault can come forward and seek legal redress without further retribution from the community, media or society at large.

Another Year Older, Another Year Wiser

Somebody has a birthday coming up. And that somebody is me.

I have been waiting to turn the big 2-5 ever since I first saw that Sex and the City episode. You know the one. The one where Carrie’s friends are a no-show at her birthday dinner, and the chick sitting behind her, who is also celebrating her birthday, bellows, “25? Fuck I’m old!” right before blowing out the candles on her cake. I can't believe I finally have carte blanche to say that all night long and no one can get annoyed with me. Well, they can, but they have to hide it because I’m the birthday girl.

Even though my birthday is technically on Sunday, I’m celebrating on Saturday. I plan to be doing the Spring Break Shake well into the wee hours of the night, so it will be my “real” birthday for a good chunk of the festivities.

But I have a dilemma. Nina had emailed a bunch of our friends a save-the-date for my birthday well before the holidays, which pre-dated all the Ashley/Luke/me awkwardness. The plan is this: Big group dinner at this phenomenal BBQ spot in Harlem, then tearing up the dance floor at cheesy bars on the Upper East Side. All significant others are invited.

“What do you want me to do about Ashley?” Nina was sitting on my couch, her iPad perched on her lap, an email with the finalized plans on the screen.

“Well, I have three options, right?” I counted on my fingers as I spoke. “One, I can invite Ashley and Luke even though they’re acting like a real pair of a-holes right now, two, I can invite Ashley and not Luke, or three, not invite either of them.”

“I would strongly advise against number two.”

“I agree,” I said. “That one is out.”

“Which means you either invite them both or not invite either of them.”

“You know what?” I said. “Invite them.”

Nina reached out and pressed her hand against my forehead.

“What are you doing?” I batted her hand away.

“Making sure you’re feeling alright,” Nina said.

“Believe me, I’m not doing this out of the goodness of my heart. I’m doing this to show to them how ridiculous they’re both acting.”

“Do you think they’ll come?”

I shrugged. The thought of Ashley not coming to my birthday dinner caused a lump to form in my throat. Even though she’s not acting like the Ashley I know right now, I couldn’t imagine being with Nina, Justin, and all of our friends except Ashley on my birthday. We’ve been inseparable for the last six years.

“Just put them on the email,” I said.

“Alright.” I watched as Nina typed their names into the “to” box and hit send.

“Now,” Nina said. “The real question is whether or not you are going to be engaging in this….” She pressed a button on her iPad and the song, “Birthday Sex” started to play. I threw one of my new decorative couch pillows at her.

“Well, are you?” Nina demanded.

“I don't want my first time with Justin to be drunk, sloppy sex.”

“Blasphemy!” Nina covered her heart with her hand. “That’s the best kind to have.”

“Yeah, with a rando. Not a guy you want to go to brunch with in the morning.”

“We agree to disagree,” Nina sighed.

“He did tell me he has a special surprise planned for me on Sunday.”

“Cute!” Nina said.

I couldn't help but grin. “I know. It makes me giddy thinking about what it could be.”

“Maybe it’s a Skype apology from his biotch sister.”

“Um, I was thinking more along the lines of a couples’ massage.”

“Don’t you have to be a couple to qualify?” Nina winked.

“Well maybe we will be after this weekend. Who knows?”

“Oh lala.”

I’m about to break out a mega-cliché here, but I'm really amazed at the difference a year makes. This time last year I was fresh out of an unhealthy five-year relationship, I couldn't run a mile without throwing up, and I was a struggling writer. Now, I’m dating a great guy, I can run 11 miles, and I have a book deal. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I’d say I’m doing alright.

Another Birth Control Recall You Should Know About

Earlier this month, we told you about drug company Pfizer Inc.’s recall of 1 million birth control pills. And now, another company is recalling their birth control.

Glenmark Generics announced today that it is recalling seven “lots” of norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol birth control tablets because, in some packets, the pills were in the wrong order. That means if you rely on one of these pills for birth control, you could accidentally get pregnant.

According to the company, the error also made the “lot” number and expiration date hard to see on the package. They added that the recall also applies to packages in which the lot number and expiration date aren’t clear. So, if you could still be affected if you use Glenmark Generics birth control pills but don’t take norgestimate or ethinyl estradiol.

The company said the pills were distributed between Sept. 21 and Dec. 30. If you’re taking one of these pills, call your doctor, return your pill packet to the pharmacy where you bought it, and start using back-up contraception immediately.

Click here for more information on the recall, and to see which lots are affected.

Another New Threat to Birth Control

February 24, 2012 at 3:12PM By Korin Miller |

By now, you’re probably already heard about the ongoing battle over birth control. If not, a quick recap: The Obama administration ruled back in August that insurance companies would be required to cover birth control costs with no co-pay to users. Some Catholic organizations have pushed back. As a result, the government has given them more time to comply with the new rules, but they still haven’t come to an agreement with Catholic bishops.

Now, women’s health is coming under fire again: A federal judge in Washington state just ruled that pharmacists who disagree with emergency contraception for religious reasons will no longer be required to dispense it. That means women in Washington could have trouble accessing Plan B when they need it most.

If you don’t live in Washington, you may think this doesn’t affect you. But it could if your state chooses to follow suit—which is entirely possible. Last year, a judge in Illinois handed down a similar ruling, which means this is a growing trend.

Want to keep tabs on your state? Click here to check out the Guttmacher Institute’s state center—it breaks down women’s health issues by state.

Yet Another Thing We Do Better Than Men...

It’s no secret that women do a lot of things better than men. In fact, science has found at least 10 different things. Oops—make that 11.

A new study out of the University of Western Ontario found that women are better at handling the stress of a job interview. Researchers found that, while women get more freaked beforehand about interviewing, we do better in the actual event.

Here’s what went down: Scientists told college students they were going to be doing job interviews and tracked their behavior leading up to the big moment.

Women talked to friends and family about their anxiety and practiced mock interviews with their friends. Guys watched TV and pretended they didn’t care about the interview, which naturally made them bomb in the moment compared to the women.

Okay, there are three things you can learn from this. One, we get more stressed about job stuff, so it’s important to do a ton of stress-relieving stuff (hit the gym, talk to your friends, do yoga) in the days before you go in for an interview. Two, being prepared for an interview really does pay off. Sure, it might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t actually prep in advance.

And three, if a job comes down to you and an equally-qualified dude, the odds are stacked in your favor. Score.

Does Chris Brown really deserve another chance?

Most people would agree 2011 has treated Chris Brown well. His fourth album, F.A.M.E., debuted at number one on the US charts. He shared the stage with teen dream Justin Bieber on his recent Australian tour. Brown has even earned a reconnection to his ex-girlfriend Rihanna, who controversially began following him on social networking site Twitter in May.

It’s a far cry from the low Brown hit just two years before, when he was charged with assaulting Rihanna after the couple left a pre-Grammy Awards after-party in 2009. If the assault wasn’t shocking enough, leaked images of Rihanna’s bruised and swollen face sealed the deal. Brown, then, became pop culture enemy number one.

Now he’s riding the comeback trail. However, a series of outbursts – including homophobic slurs on Twitter last December and over $2000 worth of damages he caused to his dressing room after he was asked about RiRi in an interview with Good Morning America in March – suggest he may not be as beyond his violent past as his handlers would like to think...

For more on Chris Brown, pick up the August issue of Cosmopolitan.

PLUS: Weigh in on the Chris Brown debate by tweeting your thoughts @CosmopolitanAU #cosmochrisbrown or tell us below. Do you think he deserves another shot?
