Your Boyfriend's Ex Probably Isn't Crazy

Right now there is a fascinating, unsettling piece by Natasha Vargas-Cooper on The Awl about her boyfriend’s unstable ex-girlfriend, who they slapped with a restraining order after she threatened them repeatedly, broke into their house in the middle of the night and slapped Vargas-Cooper. The ethics of the piece are sort of murky, as they tend to be when a professional writer maligns a person who can't speak for themselves in the essay, but Vargas-Cooper was thrown into a terrifying situation that tested her own limits for hatred and violence, which she frankly admits. At one point, she wonders how complicit her boyfriend (who, overall, she writes about lovingly and blamelessly) was in his relationship with the woman — how much he fed into her craziness.

Fortunately, most of us haven’t been in a situation as extreme as Vargas-Cooper’s, but you frequently do hear about how “crazy” a guy’s ex-girlfriend was. “Yeah, she was really crazy,” he casually says, munching on a cheese fry. “Reeeeeeally nuts. Glad I’m out of that relationship!”

This is easy to believe, mostly because it's also fun to believe — to report back to your friends about his crazy ex, to check her out on Facebook and talk shit on her, and to have the consistent inner monologue that you’re so much better than that psycho-bitch he used to go out with. It’s the reason that cheated-on and cheated-with women often turn on each other instead of attacking the guy who screwed them both over. Shitting on other women where men are concerned is sort of primal and instinctive to a lot of us, and it’s deeply unappealing. We’re well past the hunting and gathering days.

The core of my argument is that the concept of “crazy,” like the concept of “needy,” is relative, and I think we all know that. Before the stalking and harassment transpired, Vargas-Cooper had heard that the woman was “crazy,” but writes, “I [knew] the value ‘crazy’ has in the currency of gossip. I know it’s a term most often applied to a female partner when she falls below the expectations of a group.”

Frankly, short of true restraining-order-for-assault craziness, oftentimes the labels of “crazy” or “needy” are applied to women who simply ask for more than the guys they’re hooking up with are willing to give them. This could range from “text me 70 times a day” to “call me on my birthday” to “acknowledge my presence when we are at a party together.” There is a very good Jezebel post about this by Tracy Moore, which lances an (old! Embarrassing!) Cosmo piece about how not to be “That Girl.” Meaning how not to come across as needy or crazy by his definition, not yours. And we all know that basing your actions entirely on how he may or may not perceive them is the primrose path to a big pile of shit.

And the end of relationships are often heated and passionate on both sides. When your relationship with this guy ends, he could be eating cheese fries with some other girl and talking about how crazy you are. As far as I'm concerned, when a guy calls his ex crazy, it should be a red flag. It's déclassé to talk shit on your ex to your current romantic prospect in the early stages of a relationship — besides, you should have more interesting, positive conversation topics than ragging on some woman who's not even at the table — and it may just reflect more on him than her.

How Prince Harry Would Probably Woo You

The male mind is an interesting place and, most days, we find ourselves wondering what exactly is going on in there. Luckily, a new survey of British men gave us a bit of insight on how guys across the pond think, specifically what they believe are the top romantic gestures.

This info might come in handy in case you ever meet Prince Harry out at a pub and need to know if he's trying to woo you—yeah, you're welcome.

Apparently, giving a gal control of the TV remote is the most romantic thing a man can do, according to British men. (Seriously?) Surprising a woman with flowers and offering to cook dinner also came in as top expressions of devotion, which seem a little bit more loving to us.

Some guys, however, seem to think that putting out the trash cans, cleaning the house, and putting the toilet seat down are good ways to show their love. Which, yes, they are. But, they're also kinda expected...right?

Though, if Harry left the toilet seat up and our bums fell into toilet water because of it, we'd probably just forgive him.

Study: If You've Got Long Hair, Then You're Probably Wife Material (Obvi)

It almost worked for Cece on New Girl.

We love long hair just as much as short hair. But according to a new study, long hair will get him to put a ring on it quicker. LOL...

In the study, Great Clips surveyed women and men to find out which hairstyles they love and hate. Seventy-four percent of men said they found women with long hair the most attractive. Me thinks it's so he has something to grab as he goes doggy style (aka every man's favorite position), but that's just a hunch.

ANYWAY. The guys were then asked to describe the top four qualities a woman with long hair possibly possessed. Number one was sexy, followed by fun, young, and...wife material.

HAHA, yeah. Let that sink in.

Your hair can say a lot about you, but does it really tell him if you're the one to marry? Probably not. Call me crazy, but there are other factors there are other factors that lead to tying the knot that don't have anything to do with your tresses.

And, as a girl who once had a pixie cut, short-haired girls know how to have more fun. :)

A Complete, Probably Biased Ranking of Carrie Bradshaw’s 18 Sex and the City Boyfriends

Notable primarily for being the first man Carrie hooks up with onscreen in season one (“Should we have sex like men?”) as well as having straight-up shark face, Kurt’s (actor Bill Sage's) existence was fleeting. He was there, and then he was gone, leaving only the lingering scent of Drakkar Noir and foreign venereal diseases in his wake.

Verdict: One cosmo with lipstick around the rim.

What Hillary Clinton's 2014 Book Probably Won't Cover

Big news this morning, y'all. Secretary of State and potential presidential candidate (also: power player, role model, and one half of, if I may, Billary) Hillary Rodham Clinton will be releasing a new book about foreign policy from Simon and Schuster in 2014.

According to the New York Times, "The yet-to-be titled book will use a number of dramatic moments during Secretary Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State to frame her thoughts about the recent history of U.S. foreign policy and the urgent, ongoing need for American leadership in a changing world."

Other topics will include the killing of Osama bin Laden, the overthrow of Libya's Qaddafi regime and her controversial handling of it, and the killings of three Americans (one an ambassador) in Benghazi last year. In addition, it will address the feminist Clinton's specific attention to women and girls in underdeveloped nations.

The book will doubtlessly be fascinating, but we have to admit that there are certain topics that likely won't be included that, frankly, we're dying to know. Clinton's known for being tight-lipped about her personal life, which illuminates the double standard faced by women in politics: One can hardly imagine her describing, as President Obama wrote about Michelle in The Audacity of Hope, that their first kiss "tasted like chocolate").

But the personal lives of politicians, regardless of their gender, have always been fascinating to the rest of us. Particularly the Clintons, whose marriage could be of convenience, of love, of mutual respect... or all of the above. Or none of the above. As both Bill and Hillary have dealt with health problems in the last few years, it's become clear that there's a chance we may never know the true nature of their marriage.

Granted, a biopic screenplay called Rodham circulating Hollywood may display more of the private side of Hillary. But not without taking some artistic license, I'm sure.

6 Signs You're Probably Getting Friend Zoned
