The Ultimate Sex Toy Guide for Lesbian* Couples

If you’ve felt like the majority of sex-toy articles you’ve come across in the past have catered to heterosexual pairings, and you’re all *blank stare* “That does not concern me or my needs,” then today is your lucky day (slash tonight is your lucky night WINK WINK).

Last week I took myself down to Toys in Babeland, a wonderful queer-owned, sex-positive shop in Brooklyn (there are also locations in Manhattan and Seattle), and talked to Claire Cavanah, the company’s co-founder. Armed with my notebook and pen, along with some basic knowledge gleaned from previous, non-research related trips to Babeland, Claire showed me the ins-and-outs (GET IT) of toys that can add enjoyment for both/all parties in lesbian sexcapades.

Truth be told, most sex toys can be used for any and all bodies in any and all couples or groupings. All you need is a little creativity, an open mind, and possibly some lube. So! Lesbians, and pretty much anyone else, here are some basics in gettin’ it on with a little help from your (sex-toy) friends.

Do all lesbians use strap-ons? Nope. Do some of us? Yup.

For those of you who enjoy penetration, or who are doin’ it and doin’ it well with someone who enjoys penetration, strap-ons can be super fun and also come in a variety of shapes and sizes (both in the harness and the dildo department!) Here are the basics of what you can find in the land of strap-ons:

The Harness

Choice Number One: Leather vs. Cloth
Leather Harnesses, like the “Jaguar,” ($95) last for a very long time, mold to your body with repeated use, and warm to the touch.

Cloth Harnesses, like Spareparts’ “Joque,” ($120) are soft, and adjust with velcro instead of buckles (for swift adjustments when speed is of the essence), and also often have additional pockets for small vibrators! “Joque” has two pockets, one for a small bullet vibrator for the receiving party, and another for a bullet vibrator for the wearer!

Choice Number Two: To Strap or Not to Strap
There's also the “RodeoH” harness, ($45) which is basically tight-fitting underwear that will hold your favorite dildo. The beauty of going sans-straps is the ease of use (everyone knows how to put on a pair of underwear), and also the fact that these can go in the laundry just like any other article of clothing! In my humble lesbian opinion, this means you’ll probably get a lot more use out of said strap-on.

The Dildo

Choosing a dildo requires a few decisions as well. The most obvious, perhaps, is size. You can go small, large, straight, curved… the options in Dildo-land are virtually endless.

Appearance is also a factor. Some dildo-users are after authenticity: they want their parts to look like the real deal, right down to the balls (which will totally fit in the Joque!). Others would rather have the fun without making an actual-penis visual connection, and so may choose a dildo that looks as far from the real thing as possible.

Material is also a factor. If you are using your dildo with a strap on — silicone is the name of the game. If you are going hands-on over strap-on, though, there are glass and stainless steel options which are very skilled at targeting the g-spot (plus, using your hands gives you added control).

Lastly, if you and your partner are both penetration fans, check this out: you can use a double-sided dildo like the Feeldoe in many of the harnesses so that the wearer and the receiver are both getting what they seek. Boom.

(Bandit, $116; Rainbow Amor, $65; Feeldoe, $150.)

Yes, skin-to-skin contact is a wonderful thing, but let’s not underestimate the power of batteries and silicone. For those of you who are into shakin’ / rattlin’ / rollin’ while bonin’, here are some killer vibrators that can pack a real one-two punch.

Hello Touch Fingertip Vibes, $65: Combine the ability to touch your human with a BATTERY POWERED PACK. What more do we need to say, really.

JimmyJane’s Form Vibes, $145: Form vibrators are top-of-the-line wonderful, completely waterproof, and offer various ways of interacting with your partner. The Form 3 is shaped like a tongue, if that’s what you’re into, and the Form 4 is able to be held in place with your legs while doing other things with your hands (including sexting for all you long distance-ers!)

WeVibes, $159: WeVibes offer dual stimulation and can be worn during penetration to increase all the good feelings in all the right places. This is basically like having your cake and also cookies and eating them all and then getting brownies. Tadaaa.

Minna Ola, $149: The Minna doesn’t have settings, it responds to your touch. The more pressure you put on the Minna, the more intense the vibration. It’s like a smartphone for your vagina. Get out of my face. *buys Minna*

Claire told me that clitoral nerve endings go all the way back around our bodies to near our butts and it’s all connected and then she started singing “The Circle of Life.” Just kidding about the singing… not kidding about anything else. If you or your boo are into touchin’ butts, my takeaway was that NJoy is where it’s at.

Njoy Stainless Plugs, $65 - $300: The dude who makes Njoy stainless steel toys started out as a BICYCLE MAKER and was like, “I can use my skills for further good in the form of this stainless steel plug you can pop in your butt for orgasms that make your head explode.” Njoys come in various shapes and sizes and amazing little cases. GO GET ONE, WHAT’S STOPPING YOU.

You. Guys. The amount of fun you can have with blindfolds and feathers and handcuffs and whips or paddles or whatever you like, I don’t know you, is pretty amazing. I was super into the Under The Bed Restraints, $58, which allow you to do all your tyin’ up WITHOUT EVEN NEEDING A HEADBOARD. Just put the straps under your mattress and BLAM-O you can cuff your partner (or yourself, Houdini) down to the bed.

Bonus Prize (or Reason to Hate the World): There is also something called The Fifty Shades of Grey Submit to Me Beginners Kit, $56, which includes blindfold, restraints, a paddle, and more. *puts head into hands**contemplates life*

Never leave home without it. Things are always more fun when they are lubricated. Well, most things, anyway. Water based lube is the go-to if you are using it with toys, as the chemical makeup of most toys will break down with silicon lube. Silicone lube is great for sans-toy play, as it lasts for a million years (approximately).

NEWSFLASH: There is this awesome Babeland lube that is a water/silicone hybrid, called Babeland Silk, $16, which is safe for toys AND lasts a long time. Blamo.

The Most Annoying Things Engaged Couples Do

No, you are not crazy. A metric buttload of people got engaged on Facebook (and in real life, but we all know that counts for less) between Thanksgiving and New Years. The Atlantic pins the sociological trend on what they're calling "the Love Actually postulate," which hypothesizes that the twinkly lights and general loveliness of the winter season prompts more people to take the plunge. Obviously these people are not trapped in the disgusting piss-and-shit snowglobe that is New York in winter, which is about as romantic as shower time at the Manhattan Detention Complex.

Amidst the sea of engagements you might notice that certain elements of social decency have been left by the wayside. So here’s a helpful primer to send around to any of your friends who got Facebook-engaged and almost immediately, tenderly, slid their heads up their own butts.

1. They forget that the Earth does, in fact, continue to spin for single people. It’s spinning... wait for it... right now. Sometimes when a girl just got engaged, the only kind of good news she hears from friends are other engagements. Or weddings, or babies. Anything else (a rent-controlled place! A fantastic job or a raise! A book deal! Getting a dog and being pretty sure you will be a responsible dog owner!) just elicits a half-hearted, "Oh, that’s good."

2. They shoot their load on heartfelt declarations of love — as Facebook status updates. Which might be unwise, not to mention kind of weird. Unfortunately, due to the nature of Facebook feeds, your lovely just-engaged sonnet (“My new fiancée Rebecca Greeble is my love, my life, my North Star, my Alpha and my Omega, and my Mentos-fresh-breathed, mermaid-haired reason for living”) will look kind of out of place sandwiched between some guy from high school’s status update about how good Taco Bell Crunch Wrap Supremes are and a former co-worker’s sloppy-drunk Instagrams. Also, don’t you need to say that shit at the actual wedding? Is there any more you can possibly say about this person? Because you just wrote like five paragraphs about how her hair smells like apricots and possibility.

3. They Instagram their ring, hence inviting the scrutiny of every single woman they are Facebook friends with. First of all, just the fact that you’re posting it will inevitably be a point of ridicule (probably from women who will end up Instagramming their own rings when the time comes, IMHO). It will also be open season for the size of the diamond. If it’s big enough to ice-skate on, like Kardashian big, you’re definitely gonna get shade thrown at you behind your back. And if it’s anything other than a diamond, you’ll get shade for trying to be “different.” Not that any of the said shade is valid or fair! But it’ll happen. Trust me.

This goes double if you put so many filters on the photo that it looks like your hand might be in Middle Earth.

4. They think they are displaying their ring “subtly” in a group photo. (They're wrong.) You’re like, putting your ring in my mouth through the screen. I have a diamond in my mouth now.

5. They do not realize that being a bridesmaid doesn’t make me an indentured servant who can drop everything to make sure the bachelorette party t-shirts are being shipped on time or whether those goody-bag dildos have little wedding veils on them like they were supposed to. I am happy to help plan! However, I still have a job and a life.

6. They forget that not everyone in their bridal party is made of money. Okay, so I'm throwing down for your destination wedding, a hotel room, this bridesmaids dress, the blender you registered for on The Knot, and shouldered most of the financial burden of your bridal shower and bachelorette party. So, like, I'm gonna be homeless now basically. Because that was rent. Actually, that was about four months' worth of rent, which I was too embarrassed to tell you because you already feel bad for me since I'm not engaged.

7. God willing, they don't, but occasionally they do use hashtags such as #blessed or #luckygirl. I mean, just, please.

8. They forget that not everybody wants to be them. I am so, so happy that you are happy, Engaged Friend! But happiness is so different for everyone. You should not assume that everyone outside the glorious cocoon of your love is emotionally freezing, begging for gruel like a Dickensian orphan. We good.

9. And finally, if they ignore these helpful reminders, they will evolve, Pokemon-style, into this.

Sexless Couples Pretend They Are Happy

A marriage without sex is like a rom-com without a hilarious, chubby best friend. What's the freakin' point? Three couples open up to the to the Daily Mail to convince themselves the public that a sexless relationship can be deeply fulfilling. Not that deep, we say with a crass wink.

Rhea and Keith Elliott have been married for 44 years, the last EIGHT totally celibate. Rhea confesses that, “we’ve gone without sex for so long…I think to have sex now would be embarrassing.” Embarrassing is being at a party and using the word "irregardless." Having sex with your husband? Not embarrassing. She goes on to explain that, “if Keith made advances now it would be like getting intimate with my brother, or best friend.” Yikes. Somebody show these old folks the casual encounters section of Craigslist, stat!

The reason for their sex slump initially was that Keith was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It affected his erectile functioning and sex drive. But instead of trying Viagra he just decided to quit making whoopee all together. He says, "Even before the prostate cancer, we’d go weeks without sex. For me it was never the most important thing in the world, and I’d say the same for Rhea." Speak for yourself, bro. Rhea doesn't sound like the happiest jalapeño in the tostada. She admits, "During the first couple of years, I’d get very upset when Keith rejected my advances." No, duh. Being rebuffed for sex is the worst, especially for a woman.

I had a boyfriend once that barely ever wanted to "renovate my basement" and it made me feel terrible. Whenever I tried to initiate fun times he'd be like, "I'm sleepy, I have a headache." I'd be like, "That's what women say when they secretly think their boyfriends are gross! Destroy my pussy already!" Ugh, in-the-closet gay boyfriends are THE WORST.

The point is, it's a real ego blow to be in a sexless relationship. Also profiled by the Mail, Tracey and her husband Julian haven't had sex in a year, because apparently his job is stressful. You know who else's job was stressful? Eliott Spitzer's! And he managed to bang his wife AND hella escorts. Julian says, "We talk about rekindling our love life but never seem to get around to it. We had a weekend away at a country hotel a couple of weeks ago and I was so exhausted I spent most of the time asleep." I don't buy it. If I were Tracey, I'd be hacking into that man's cell phone and email faster than you can say, "My husband is sleeping with an underage Thai lady-boy."

The truth is that being intimate is key to a healthy for a relationship. Psychologist Leila Collins told the Daily Mail that, "Lack of sex in a marriage is the reason behind lots of affairs....men will pay for sex rather than risk losing their families." Which is to say nothing of women's sex drives. If people are unsatisfied in their partnership, they're gonna move on. It's a fact. In all fairness though, two out of three of the couples that were interviewed had some kind of physical trauma. It's not like they just woke up one day and stopped being horny. Keith had prostate cancer and a woman named Charlotte had a near-death pregnancy. It's understandable that there would be some fear around sex after a health scare.

But throwing in the towel on the whole business seems a little extreme. These couples need to start exploring and experimenting with pleasure. Sex doesn't have to just be pole-in-the-hole grinding. It can be watching Game of Thrones and diddling each other! Get creative, people!

Readers, do me a favor. If you're married, ravage the crap out your partner tonight. I'm talking duct tape, nipple clamps and Mexican wrestling masks. Go to 11. Do it for Rhea.

The Weirdest Places Couples Have Had Sex

Annoying Facebook Couples Are Actually More In Love

People do a lot of annoying things on Facebook (myself definitely included). One of the worst offenders, hands down, is the chick we all have in our newsfeeds who posts photos of her wedding for an entire year after her nuptials takes place. (Seriously, how many photos are there of you looking down demurely at your bouquet?!)

But even more eye-roll-inducing are those couples who constantly tag each other in their status updates, wall-post "cute" messages that should be sent via text, and upload photos of the two of them doing really nauseating things together (like having picnics while watching the sunset while holding hands).

I've always thought (er, hoped) that those tag-happy, ultra lovey-dovey-on-social-media couples were just overcompensating for feeling lonely or trapped in their relationships. (What can I say? I'm a horrible person.) But, alas, it just means that they really do love each other more than the rest of us do.

According to a new study about Facebook habits, people who report appearing in more photos with their partner and who regularly tag their partner in their status updates tend to have closer romantic relationships. Researchers say that Facebook can actually be a window into people's worlds, at least in part, to how couples interact, and maybe even feel, in real life.

So, before you gag over status updates like "Can't wait for my love-a-boo to get home from work so he can hold me ever so gently," you might want to take a long, hard look at your black heart instead.
