Did Andrew Garfield Really Bail On Batkid At The Oscars?

Spiderman star Andrew Garfield had been scheduled to present an Award at last weekend's Oscars, but was replaced at the last minute by Chris Evans. (Which is a fair trade.) Earlier this week, sources explained his absence as due to "personal reasons" involving his girlfriend Emma Stone's family. Page Six now says that's not the case, though, and that instead Garfield basically had a diva moment during pre-broadcast rehearsals — and then bailed on his skit.

Cruelly, that meant 5-year-old Batkid Miles Scott missed out on his Oscars debut. Scott came to the public's attention when the Make-a-Wish foundation fulfilled his dream to be "Batkid" for a day last November. (Having been diagnosed with leukemia as a toddler, he just entered remission.) The entire city of San Francisco played along, watching Miles save the day in classic comic book plotlines — he rescued a lady, defused a fake bomb, and caught the bad guy. In further recognition of his bravery, he was scheduled to be inducted as an official superhero at the Oscars.

And Garfield was tapped to do the honors, but Page Six says that during rehearsals he "decided he didn’t like his lines." After producers vetoed his rewrites, he apparently "had a tantrum" and stormed off. Miles' family are believed to have witnessed the messy scene and "were devastated." Though Captain America actor Chris Evans filled in, the superhero segment was cut from the broadcast. As an apology, producers later gifted the Scott family tickets to Disneyland.

The Oscars of Food Gala

While Anne Hathaway was going punk and showing off her new blonde locks at the Met Gala, Cosmo was across town getting its grub on at the James Beard Awards, a.k.a the Oscars of food.

Actor Oliver Platt emceed the movie-themed ceremony on a stage decked out in shimmering tinsel, and for a good few hours, he led the restaurant industry (looking spiffy in black tie instead of chef's whites) in honoring each others' achievements.

Okay, bla bla, let's get to the yummy stuff.

We pounced early on French culinary giant Jacques Pepin, who told us between mouthfuls of crepe how he first seduced his wife of 48 years. "Champagne. Caviar," he said like a boss. (Um, sold.)

New online dater Martha Stewart—showing off her legs in a silk dress—said that men don't usually get behind the stove for her. "Generally, they want me to cook," she said, not that they hadn't turned the tables on her before. The lover-made meal she remembered most? Pasta puttanesca. Salty!

Chopped host Ted Allen joked that he didn't need much more than some pinot noir and a suitor under the age of 80 to be won over, and declared that the sexiest food of all is the peach. "It's sweet and juicy and it kind of looks like parts of a person," he said. "It's very sensual and tactile and soft. But most food is sexy."

Over at her station, Christina Tosi, queen of Momofuku Milk Bar, said that "sweets are a really powerful potion." Example: To court her current beau, she had baked him a birthday cake. To court us, she offered a popcorn-flavored cake truffle. We're just so easy.

Gavin Kaysen, the executive chef of NYC's Café Boulud, handed over a spoonful of octopus and sea urchin ("It's like a tongue," he said) before waxing romantic. "When I met my wife, we made wild mushroom risotto together," he said. "That was sexy."

What advice did Kaysen have for someone trying to get romantic in the kitchen? "Food needs to be less complicated when you cook it at home," he said. "You don't want to take time to wash dishes. You want to take time to have sex. So just cook, have fun, and get to the real party."

WD-50's Wylie Dufresne, one of the night's winners, gave even simpler advice: "All you have to do is try," he said. "You can cook the worst meal of your life, and if she sees the sweat on your brow, your end game is still there. It's about the effort."

So much food talk was making this girl ravenous, so we grabbed one of Chipotle chef Nate Appleman's double cheeseburger sliders and ran out to savor every soft bite while watching the water fountain in front of Lincoln Center dance in the balmy spring night. Doesn't get much more delicious than that on a Monday, does it?

Oscars Beauty Sweepstakes: Win a $1000 A-List Skin Treatment

Meet the Beauty Bloggers

Carly Cardellino: I'm the beauty and fashion editor here at Cosmopolitan.com. I'll try just about anything once (I have the crop cut—my hair used to be super-long—and body wave to prove it) and then report back. I'm obsessed with hair products, like volumizers and salt sprays, as well as mascara, nail polish, a good foundation (right now I'm using Tom Ford Beauty Traceless Foundation SPF 15), and blush (it literally changes the way you look in seconds)—hopefully you can see why I'm in this business. I also love picking out head-to-toe outfits for friends whether they're going on a date with their guy or a black-tie wedding—so feel free to click on that "contact" link below and send me a question.

Leah Wyar: Ladies, I’m the DIY beauty guru. My specialties? Spray-tanning and mastering the at-home manicure. I’ve tried dozens of spray-tanning formulas and have mastered the art of the self-tan (don’t worry, I’ll share!). Plus, I paint on the hottest nail trends every week (currently I’m obsessed with the glitter and dark polish trend). Follow me as I branch out and perfect my DIY skills (up next: waxing!).

Marta Topran: I’m obsessed with making my skin as glowy as possible. That means trying out every anti-aging potion out there and never leaving the house without some sort of shimmery highlighter on my cheekbones. I’m also the resident brow and lash addict. Right now, I’m rocking super long lash extensions that I can’t believe I ever lived without.
