Scarlett Johansson Is Appalled at the Idea of Men Taking Away Women's Access to Birth Control

Planned Parenthood Action Fund, Scarlett Johansson, and other A-list actresses are joining forces to stand up for reproductive rights and encourage women to vote in the midterm elections. Johansson designed a cheeky pink T-shirt with mid-century font across the front saying, "Hey Politicians! The 1950s called..." and "They want their sexism back!" across the back.

The actress said she was inspired to help the organization after the Supreme Court issued a devastating decision on women's health earlier this year.

"When I heard that some politicians were cheering the Supreme Court's decision to give bosses the right to interfere in our access to birth control, I thought I had woken up in another decade," Johansson said in a statement going out to Planned Parenthood supporters this week. "Like many of my friends, I was appalled by the thought of men taking away women's ability to make our own personal health care decisions. That's when I knew I couldn't sit on the sidelines and why I'm proud to support Planned Parenthood Action Fund's 'Women Are Watching' campaign to ensure that young women know the high stakes for women's health and rights this November."

"Women are watching," she continues. "And we will fight for candidates who will ensure that birth control is affordable and who will protect access to safe and legal abortion. Women will be the key to the elections this November and it's more important than ever that young women register to vote and vote for the candidate that will stand up and fight for them."

In the coming months, Planned Parenthood Action Fund will release T-shirts designed by Gabrielle Union, star of the BET series Being Mary Jane, and Natasha Lyonne and Selenis Leyva of Orange Is the New Black. Planned Parenthood Action Fund is selling the shirts as part of their "Women Are Watching" campaign, which tracks issues relevant to women's health and mobilizes and educates voters.

The Horror! Real Women's Post-Coital Nightmares

All sorts of embarrassing, random things can happen before and during sex, but after the deed is done, shit can get just as weird. We asked some ladies to share some of the worst things that have happened to them when they were supposed to be basking in a post-O glow.
"My guy and I were lying in bed post-sex, just talking. I had just taken a sip of water when my man told a really funny joke and I started choke-coughing. To the point that I ended up throwing up on his bare chest. This was after only knowing the guy for two months, but somehow we are still together!" —Patty, 28
"In high school, my boyfriend and I were getting busy in my parents' laundry room, with me sitting on top of the washing machine. The sex was totally hot—except that right after we finished, the laundry door swung wide open, and my Dad was standing there, seeing me completely naked, post-orgasm. Needless to say, my boyfriend was not allowed to come over anymore." —Megan, 23
"Before I went on the Pill, my cycle was super irregular and I never knew when Aunt Flo was going to come a-calling. One night, after getting busy with my new boyfriend in his bed, the floodgates of hell opened between my legs and blood gushed out everywhere—like the sheets looked like someone was killed in them. His face looked horrified. Not knowing what else to do, and super embarrassed, I balled up the sheets immediately, them took them back to my place and threw them in the dumpster." —Jessica, 21
"One time after hooking up with a guy I had a huge crush on, I laid back on the pillow and my vagina let out a long, wet queef. He gave me a WTF? look and I nearly died." —Ashley, 25
"In high school, I went over to my boyfriend's mom's house and we decide to have sex in the shower to spice things up. He told me his mom wasn't coming home until super late (which was good because she hated me) so imagine my surprise when, right after we finished some steamy action, there was a sharp knock on the bathroom door. He couldn't tell his mom to go away without it being suspicious and I ended up having no choice but to put my clothes back on and follow him out of the bathroom, with her standing there, glaring at me." —Emma, 22
"While basking in a post-O dream-state after having sex with my man, I noticed something large and black toward the bottom of the bed on the sheets. All of a sudden, it moved, and I realized that a huge wolf spider was running up between my legs. I froze until it literally jumped onto my outer-vag, at which point I jumped up naked and screaming, in front of my open window no less. My guy was in the bathroom when all of this occurred and he ran out when he heard my screams, then helped me kill the thing. (Yes, it took too people because it was so big and so fast.) Ever since, I've been checking out sheets, terrified it will happen again." —Noel, 29
"I went home with this guy and he started singing 'Part of Your World' from The Little Mermaid to me post-sex. It was pretty much the creepiest thing I have ever experienced." —Beth, 26
"I had just given a guy what sounded like the best orgasm the man had ever experienced. I lied there, expecting some solid cuddle time, when he suddenly said, 'Man, I really need to call my grandma,' then went out of the room to do so, leaving me there. Wait … what?" —Sara, 28
"There was this older guy I had a huge crush on in college and after a night of hanging out at his frat, we went back to his place. After fooling around for a bit, I sat up in bed not feeling so good. He asked me if I was going to barf and I said no (I'd never thrown up from alcohol before). Then, all of a sudden, I started power-barfing into my hands and all over his sheets. He was really nice about it but I felt like an idiot." —Natalie, 24

Shit Politicians Say...About Women's Rights

"I would hope that when a woman goes into a physician with a rape issue, that that physician will indeed ask her about perhaps her marriage, was this pregnancy caused by normal relations in a marriage, or was it truly caused by a rape."

—Republican Idaho state senator Chuck Winder

A Scary Threat to Women’s Health

Despite increased awareness of the dangers of tanning bed use and the importance of wearing sunscreen, a new study found that skin cancer is on the rise for women.

Experts from the Mayo Clinic studied people from 1970 to 2009, and discovered that the rate of melanoma (the deadliest form of skin cancer) increased eightfold among women, especially among those in their 20s and 30s.

One piece of good news from the study: Researchers found that less people are dying of melanoma, likely due to early interventions from regular visits to the dermatologist and keeping an eye on mole growth.

The study didn’t evaluate the reason for the dramatic increase, but researchers are pointing the finger at indoor tanning. Studies have show that people who use tanning beds are 74 percent more likely to develop melanoma than non-tanners.

How can you stay safe? Avoid tanning beds, wear sunscreen, and limit your exposure to the sun. You should also check your moles for the ABCDEs (asymmetry, a border that is irregular, colors that are different in the mole, a diameter bigger than a pencil eraser, and elevation of the mole).

Important Women’s Health News You Should Know

A controversial amendment that would have allowed any employer to refuse to cover health care services (including birth control) for “moral reasons” was rejected by the Senate yesterday.

The Blunt Amendment was a direct response to President Obama’s rule that employers and health care companies must cover birth control costs for their employees, leaving them with no co-pay.

Obama’s rule includes an exception for churches and faith-based employers, but some senators argued that requiring any employer to cover birth control when they oppose it violates their right to religious freedom.

Some senators who opposed the bill argued that it would allow employers to pick and choose which women’s health care options they want to cover, such as mammograms and prenatal care for single moms.

So, what does this mean for you? If you have health insurance and you don’t work for a religious organization, starting in August, you won’t have to pay a co-pay for birth control.

What do you think of the ruling?
