New Nail Polish Tests Your Drinks for Roofies

A group of students at North Carolina State University have created a nail polish, called Undercover Colors, that changes color when exposed to date rape drugs. They hope to have the product on shelves soon [via WKRB].

Women wearing the nail polish can casually stir a suspicious drink with their finger and, if GHB, Xanax, or Rohypnol (the most common date-rape drugs) are present, the polish will change. Granted, it's still a matter of sticking your finger in your drink, but it's a much more innocuous way to stay safe that won't involve posting up at the bar with a CSI drug kit.

Stephan Gray, Tyler Confrey-Maloney, Tasso Von Windheim, and Ankesh Madan, the students behind the invention, have received over $250,000 from investors so far, and recently won the North Carolina State Entrepreneurship Initiative. The product is still being tested, but if you'd like to donate to the cause you can do so right here.

Why You May Soon Be Getting ID'ed for Buying Nail Polish Remover

Turns out acetone nail polish remover is the new Claritin D when it comes to making meth. So much so that CVS stores in New England are starting to ask for identification when customers purchase it, as well as putting a limit on how many bottles of remover they can buy.

The drugstore chain mandated that one must be 18 and have a valid state ID or driver's license to buy nail polish remover. According to the New York Post, CVS issued this statement to back up their plan of action (that you may or may not think is bogus): “Because acetone is an ingredient used in the illegal manufacture of methamphetamine, we recently implemented a policy that a valid ID must be presented to purchase acetone-containing products such as nail polish remover. Our policy also limits the sale of these products in conjunction with other methamphetamine precursors and is based on various regulations requiring retailers to record sales of acetone.”

WPRI.com, a Rhode Island news site (via the New York Post), also revealed that the policy has been rolled out to CVS stores across Southern New England, but will it spread cross country?Only time will tell. Just don't be suprised if the next time you're itching to take that Essie Mademoiselle off your nails, a cashier asks you to whip out your ID first.

Facebook Now Sells Nail Polish In "Social Butterfly Blue"

So long, OPI! Sayonara, Essie! The hottest nail color for fall is officially Facebook's Social Butterfly Blue, only available in their Bay Area campus store and arguably the least necessary thing ever. Yes, a tech editor visiting the Facebook campus in Menlo Park, California, spotted the lacquer yesterday and tweeted (not Facebooked) a photo, because it's 2013 and this is just how things are now.

As pictured, the color is called "Social Butterfly Blue" (!!), and it has a weird little icon of a butterfly rather than the company's logo (c'mon!), and — as Mashable reports — it's only available in the campus store, not for online order. Boo hiss. So much for a fun new color for fall. (It's actually kind of a pretty hue, right?)

Also coming soon to retailers near you: Twitter toothpaste in "subtweet mint," and a luxurious Instagram BB cream that makes your face look like it's passed through an Amaro filter.

Chrome Girl: The One-Coat Wonder Polish Created by...David Boreanaz?

Well, kind of...the Bones, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Angel actor, his wife Jaime, and a neighbor couple of theirs, Melissa Ravo and her husband Aaron are all creators.

"After meeting at a neighborhood BBQ, Melissa and I instantly had a connection," Jaime told Cosmo, "but it wasn't just about a friendship—we soon learned that we also had business ideas that lined up, and Chrome Girl polish [$10, chromegirl.com] ended up being the outcome."

We got a chance to play with the lacquer alongside David (who will forever be the tortured Angel to us) and his partners in polish crime, and it speaks for itself. No wonder Jennifer Hudson is already a fan (she wore the shade 'Hard to Get' at the Oscars this year).

With 18 shades in the exsisting line, which launched earlier this year, a formula that's free of DBP, toluene, camphor, and formaldehyde, and pigment thick enough that you only need one coat, we were sold. Seriously, even the nude and white colors only need one coat—and no streaks!

"Jaime and I go through hundreds of shades in our homes, looking for the right ones to debut, and then bounce different colors and names off of our husbands," said Melissa. "Sweet Spot, baby, that's one of my favorites [it's a coral-orange shade]," said David, who doesn't mind trying out the shades when his wife needs him to.

David's nail polish color prediction for fall? "I believe plums are going to come back, I like plums for fall."

We dig that David/Booth, who is a former sniper on the show Bones, is so into the polish process and in touch with his feminine side. But creating beautiful products for women might not stop at lacquer. The actor told us, "I've always been interested in doing a shoe line. Women's shoes are incredible, so now that I'm closer to a shoe with this nail polish line, it just might happen." His first ideal shoe he'd make? "A peek-a-boo pump."

Love.

Swiped From the Beauty Closet: LCN Polish Seal

moving cross country, finding a great partner... or lobbing off all your hair a la Karlie Kloss). But don't fret: It's not an impossible task. It just takes some thought—and great advice.

"A lot of times people don't like what they're doing in their current job, but they haven't defined what they want to be doing in their potential new job," Nicole Williams, career expert and author of Girl On Top, tells Cosmopolitan.com.

She says nabbing your dream job starts with doing some soul-searching: "I ask people to assess components of their current working life, and match them against the career they are looking to get into."

Try asking yourself these questions...

Time: How many hours do you want to work and in what kind of environment? Big company, small, telecommute, work-from-home flexibility (you know, the kind banned at Yahoo!)

Challenge Level: How important is growth potential and being challenged to you? Are you ambitious and ready to lean in, or just looking for a 9 to 5 to fill your time?

Work Environment: Define your best possible scenario in terms of work relationships. Who are you working with and for? What kind of boss would be ideal? Do you have dreams of becoming a boss?

Passion: How important is passion to you? For example, a woman we know races triathlons and feels like she doesn't need to be passionate about her job; her passion is attached to her sport.

6. Money: How much do you need to make? How much money do you want to make?

Steps To Making A Career Change

Stop Delaying

"The longer you are in the job you are thinking of leaving, the further away you are from new opportunity," says Williams. "It doesn't get any easier. Doing it earlier is emotionally, mentally and professionally better."

Be Willing To Sacrifice Something

You may have to start from the bottom (or the middle) and work your way to the top; Either way, be ready to drop a few rungs on the corporate ladder.

"Internships can be a good idea—or be willing to take a pay cut," says Williams. "If this internship, for example, introduces you to influential people and helps develop a skill-set, you'll be able to take these things to leverage them into a bigger position."

Start Saving

"Have a solid idea of the risk and savings in the bank," advises Williams. Even if it means cutting back on luxuries. "If you know the internship is going to last for six months at a minimum, that's the number you need to have in savings, and I normally advise 10 to 20 percent in savings as a risk buffer."

Network

"People love to talk about themselves," says Williams. "Find them on LinkedIn and through people you know, and consult with them."

Williams suggests asking those in similar fields questions like, "I wonder if you'd speak to me about your day-to-day life; What do you love most about the work that you do; What do you wish you would have known going into this career?"

"Those kind of questions are going to give you the information you need and will help you know the people you are going to need to know," she adds.

Now that you are armed with more than just your resume and a fresh manicure, it's time to start hitting the pavement. Happy hunting, gals.

Swiped From the Beauty Closet: LCN Polish Seal

So...this might just be the coolest nail product to hit the scene since gel manicures: LCN Polish Seal, $22, lcnboutique.com.

With one layer of this top coat (brushed the whole way over the tip of your nail to prevent chipping), your regularly polished digits will have the durability of a gel manicure. No joke. I tried it recently and I'm seriously obsessed.

When it comes to my nails, I'm really into doing them myself, and then getting a pro mani once a month to keep my tips and cuticles in top shape. However, I hate with a passion when my polish chips and my nails look messy, so I'm constantly touching them up. But thanks to this polish seal, the touch-ups are a thing of the past.

Here's how this magic potion works: You paint on a coat over your already polished natural or artificial nails, and then walk over to a 60 watt light bulb in your house and hold your tips under the light for three minutes. Done and done.

You can also use a UV lamp, but you don't have to, which is awesome because who really has a UV lamp at the ready? The result: Your manicure will last double the amount of time, and you'll save a lot of cash since it's a DIY treatment.

Oh, and another awesome point: You can take the gel top coat off yourself with non-acetone or acetone remover—unlike regular gel manis, which require you to see a pro so you don't damage your nails.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking gel manis. I still get them, but since I don't always have the time, this LCN Polish Seal has become my BFF.

So, will you be trying out this easy-to-use, life-changing top coat? Let me know how you like it!

Want to Name Your Own Nail Polish? Now You Can!

We may not all be able to create and name our own nail polish colors like, say, Deborah Lippmann, but you can do the latter thanks to a site called Pretty Please Nail Polish.

Here's how you play the naming game: First, go to prettypleasenailpolish.com and click "Shop." Then, proceed to choose your color (we're coveting the cobalt shade), and type in a name or message up to 24 characters long. Finally, purchase your polish (they're $10 each) and wait patiently for it to arrive in several days. See, super easy, right?

The cool thing about this site is that you can name a polish and keep it for youself (hello, cool factor!), or type a message for a friend and give it to them as a unique gift for graduation, Valentine's Day, a bachelorette party, baby shower—you name it (literally).

So what are you waiting for? Visit the site, pick a color, type a message, and let us know what you think!

Modern Family and Girls Inspire Nail Polish Colors

Okay, so we just found out about two new nail-polish-meets-TV-show collections that we think you're going to freak over.

First, the Nicole by OPI Modern Family Nail Polishes, inspired by the fun-loving cast of the ABC hit series.

The line of 14 nail polishes is really fun and festive and is a killer representation of the show's characters. And the punny names are hilarious. A few include: I Do De-Claire!, a soft rose; She’s Lily Something, a pink shade with sparkly stars; A Like-Haley Story, a fierce fuchsia; My Jay or the Highway!, a trendy taupe—and 10 more where that came from.

Fan of the series/brand? The shades launch in January 2013 and will be sold at ulta.com for $8 a bottle.

Also launching in January is nail guru Deborah Lippmann's GIRLS limited-edition four-piece nail polish set ($45) that she dreamed up with the HBO hit's creator Lena Dunham. The lacquers are inspired by the four characters' personalities and fit them perfectly.

Timed perfectly with the launch of the show's second-season, you can do up your digits (in HANNAH, a hunter green; MARNIE, a proper pink; SHOSHANNA, a vivid violet; and JESSA, a bohemian burgundy), depending on which girl you're channeling at that moment—all while watching the season premiere.

Want to make sure your set is in your pretty little hands before all of your friends? Pre-order it here.

What do you think about these TV shows and their nail polish collections?

Kelly Osbourne Shows Off Her Seriously Pricey Polish

Kelly Osbourne looked absolutely stunning on the red carpet the other night at the Emmy Awards, wearing a lilac-colored Zac Posen gown—and a $250,000 manicure (yes, you read that right).

The polish, which contains 267-carats of black diamonds, was created by Los Angeles-based luxury jeweler Azature. It was released last month and Kelly, along with Jennifer Lopez, have been the only celebs to rock it. Azature recently said in an interview that the black diamond is the ultimate fine jewel, so why not showcase this style on nails? So...he developed the Black Diamond Nail Polish in order to preserve the elegance of the black diamond.

Kelly told E! on the red carpet: "I've been so scared to touch anything because it contains powdered black diamonds worth $250,000. [The bottle] is in a safe upstairs in the hotel room. I couldn't believe it. I have not touched a thing all day." Prior to the awards ceremony, she also uploaded an image of the nail polish to Instagram, writing: "I'm s***ting myself to have that much money on my nails!"

Can't swing a swipe of this lacquer (don't worry, we can't either)? Coat your tips with this affordable version Azature Black Diamond Nail Polish, $25, ronrobinson.com.

Swiped From the Beauty Closet:
NailPak All n' 1 Polish, Remover, and File

Okay, so if you're a DIY manicure kind of girl, then listen up. Recently I was watching an episode of ABC's Shark Tank and tuned in a little closer when I heard a woman pitching a new nail polish concept: NailPak All n' 1 Nail Lacquer, Remover, and File, $15 each, dualitycosmetics.com.

Here's the gist: Entrepreneur Barbara Lampugnale came up with the idea to create an all-in-one manicure system. The three-in-one product bundles a nail polish, circular file, and 40 pre-soaked remover pads into one user-friendly stackable package. Genius, right? The sharks (slash investors) thought so, too, and her idea was funded on the spot.

After watching the show, I checked the Cosmo beauty closet and sure enough—a NailPak had arrived. I was psyched to take it for a test drive. My review: It's super-convenient, especially for traveling (it's .6 fl. oz.), the polish pads wiped my existing lacquer right off of my tips, and the file, although tiny, did the trick. Even better, the bottle holds everything you need to give yourself a manicure in a pinch, so you're all set.

Will you be picking up one of these cool polish packs?
