Skinny Speed Dating Is a Thing and We're Kinda Pissed About It

This week, we reported on a study that found that bias against bigger people—fattism—is a growing issue, ingrained in children as young as four.

And it's no wonder that our culture has become so pro-skinny: In addition to the airbrushed idealized images of women we see, well, everywhere, there are now special speed dating events for the diminutive crowd.

Speed dating site OnSpeedDating.com is offering what it calls "Skinny Minny" events, which only allow women who are size eight or below to participate. Yeah. Seriously.

But what goes into the execution of these events makes them even worse. According to The Huffington Post, women who go to the events have to wear their dress size on their nametags. Naturally, there are no such stipulations for men—guys of every size are allowed to partake in the "fun."

In fact, these speed dating sessions are specially tailored to please discerning single guys, making sure the women available perfectly suit their tastes. HuffPost cites a past event description which read: "Guys, no need to worry about meeting a biggie-size chick 'down-sizing' to an 8 like when you're dating online. We'll be checking labels at the door!" (Excuse me while I go vomit.)

Okay, fine. People have certain tastes for what they want in a partner, whether it's big, small, black, white, short, tall, emo, or preppy. I get it.

But, look, I'm one of those so-called "skinny minnies" and I am all kinds of offended by this. I have a hard time believing that any guy who would actually sign up for this crap isn't a total douchebag. A man who so much as finds the event description somewhat appealing is undateable in my book. It's not just about the concept of these events but the tone, the one-sidedness, and the fact that women are basically treated like objects, or cattle, by the way they have to display their specs on their shirts.

What self-respecting woman would voluntarily go to an event like this? All I know is, the whole situation is all about wrong.
