Hair How-To: Flirty Finger Waves

Need a subtle yet sexy style for a night out on the town? Hair stylist Joshua Ristaino shows you the way.

1. Comb

2. Large styling clips

3. Large barrel curling iron

1. Part your hair in line with the arch of your right eyebrow. Use a comb to make the line perfectly straight, like model and interior designer Lindsay Marcella did here.

2. Section your hair into several sections (back, sides, front) using styling clips, like Harry Josh Pro Styling Clips. Curl the top section of your hair with a large barrel curling iron (Lindsay used Conair 1.5-Inch Ceramic Curling Iron), wrapping it over and around the barrel. Then, keeping the curl in a circular formation as you release it from the iron, pin the curl with a pinch hair clip as it cools and sets. Make three rows of curls this way.

3. Make sure all your hair is clipped into place while your curls cool. This will cause the curl to hold longer.

4. Curl the next 1.5-inch section of hair along the right side of your head, wrapping your hair under the barrel and away from your face. Curling your hair this way will draw focus to your face by opening it up. As you continue to curl your hair in 1.5-inch segments, alternate how you curl each section between wrapping the hair over the barrel, and under the barrel. This will differentiate the way the S-curves you'll create in step seven will lie.

5. Continue securing every curl on your head with a pinch hair clip.

6. Brush out your curls with a boar bristle brush. This helps work your hair into a more uniform wave. Lindsay used a Mason Pearson Boar Bristle Brush here.

7. Insert a long silver sectioning clip any part where the wave juts toward the back of your head. This will help exaggerate the indent and secure it while you do your makeup. When you remove the clips, the glamorous waves will be locked into place even more.

Finally, remove the sectioning clips, hit your hair with hairspray, and go!

Makeup How-To: Two-Toned Ombrè lip

Makeup artist Lauren Cosenza breaks down exactly how to get this gorgeous two-toned tropical-colored lip.

1. Lip balm
2. Disposable mascara wand
3. Foundation
4. Concealer brush
5. Cranberry-colored lip crayon
6. Orange lip crayon
7. Orange lip gloss stain

1. Prep your lips. Apply lip balm over your lips and gently rub a clean disposable mascara wand over your lips to slough off any dead skin cells for even lip color application.

2. Create a nude base for the lip color. To make vibrant lip colors pop, prime your lips first with the same foundation you normally use on your face. Model Denise Bidot used Revlon ColorStay Foundation here and applied a tiny amount of the formula with a concealer brush evenly over her lips.

3. Line your mouth. Outline your pout with a bright, cranberry-colored lip crayon that has long-lasting wear. Denise used Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in "Standout." Continue to fill in your lips, fading out the color toward the center of your lips.

4. Create an ombrè effect. Place the tip of a long-wearing orange lip crayon (used here was Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in "Audacious") inside the center of your lips and fade it into the berry shade, creating a slight gradating effect.

5. Finish with an orange glossy stain. Give your lips that patent leather sheen by applying a dab of a glossy orange lip stain over the center of your lips. The shine in the middle of your mouth also gives the illusion of a fuller pout. Denise used Revlon ColorStay Moisture Stain in "Miami Fever" here.

Nail Art How-To: Tropical Fingertips

Even though summer is coming to an end, that doesn't mean summer-inspired nail art has to. Instantly give your fingertips a vacation vibe with this ombrè, beachy artwork.

1. Basecoat
2. Light blue nail polish
3. Makeup Sponge
4. Cornflower blue nail polish
5. Periwinkle nail polish
6. Drinking straw
7. Black nail polish
8. Scissors
9. Topcoat

1. Prep and paint. File your nails into the desired shape, push back your cuticles — DO NOT CUT THEM! — and apply a basecoat. Then, swipe on a coat of a super light blue base color, like Essie Nail Polish in "Something Borrowed and Blue."

2. Sponge on a cornflower blue hue. Take the corner of a makeup sponge and paint on a light blue polish, like OPI Euro Centrale Nail Lacquer in "You're Such a Budapest," from the halfway down the nail to the nail tip to create the first layer of ombrè.

3. Top off your ombrè effect with a periwinkle shade. Using the opposite side of your sponge, apply a periwinkle polish, like Deborah Lippmann Nail Polish in "I Know What Boys Like," and tap the paint at the tip of your nail.

4. Prepare to create some palm leaves with a straw. To create the palm leaf shapes, cut away half of the width of a drinking straw. Then, apply black nail polish, like Maybelline New York Color Show Nail Lacquer in "Onyx Rush," over the curved tip.

5. Draw on the palm tree leaves. Press the tip of the straw onto your nail gently and create three fronds on each side, making sure the curved lines are smaller at the top and larger at the bottom. You can place the cluster wherever you'd like your palm tree to be on your nail.

6. Cut your straw even thinner to create the trunk of the palm tree. Dip the strip of straw in the black polish.

7. Paint a line from the palm tree leaves to the tip of the nail. It's OK if it's not perfectly straight as palm tree trunks are slightly curved in shape anyway.

Finally, swipe on Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Top Coat to seal in your design, and then go pin, Instagram, and tweet your DIY design @Cosmopolitan.

Nail Art How-To: Beautiful Black Lace Nails

Nail artist Simcha Whitehill aka Miss Pop created this sexy black lace look for Emerson for one of the brand's runway shows. Now, she shows and tells Cosmo (and you!) exactly how to get this fashion-forward, must-try mani. 

1. Prep and paint. File nails into desired shape, then push back cuticles — DO NOT CUT THEM! — and apply basecoat. Then apply two coats of an opaque nude shade, like Orly Pure Porcelain. Allow polish to set for a few minutes before moving onto step two.

2. Create some lace. Dip a nail art striper brush in a metallic black polish, like Deborah Lippmann Hit Me With Your Best Shot, then draw on a fishnet pattern by creating criss-cross diagonal lines. Create a triangle at by your cuticle by drawing lines from the bottom left corner to the top right, and then the bottom right to top left. Continue with lines in this pattern until you've covered the whole nail. Make sure to leave enoug space between each line to add fleurettes.

3. Draw four dots into a four leaf clover shape at each "x." Pour a little bit of the metallic black paint out on a piece of foil. Use the small end of dotter tool to dab four dots where each of the diagonal lines intersect.

4. Complete the lace design. Create a sheer versino of the black metallic polish by mixing a ratio of 3 parts nail polish remover and one part polish in the cap of your remover bottle. Dip your striper brush into the mixture use slightly rounded strokes to draw little "x" shapes within each diamond section. This continues the fishnet effect. Once nails have set, finish with a top coat.

Hair How-To: A Textured Twist

Celebrity hairstylist Ryan Trygstad shows you exactly how to get this majorly gorgeous textured twist. You know you want to wear the hell out of it Saturday night.

1. Tease your hair. Spray Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray at the root of your crown, and then backcomb that entire area, creating height. Then, make a deep side part from your hairline almost to the crown of your head, using the end of a rattail comb, making sure to keep the volume and movement in place. 

2. Put your hair in a ponytail. Take a ponytail holder that matches your hair and create a loose, low ponytail. Next, pull the ponytail holder toward the ends of your hair so that it's at the last two inches. This will keep your hair together as you roll it toward your head, but still allowing it to feel loose and messy.

3. Twist your hair. Starting with the ends, create a French twist by rolling the ponytail in towards the head until it's tight, hiding the fastened end.

4. Set the twist. Position the twist in the middle of the back of your head.

5. Pin the twist. Using large French pins/U-pin, starting at the nape, pin along the twist until it feels secure and continue working the pins all the way up the pleat of the twist to the top.

6. Finish with hairspray. Finish by spraying Redken Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray for hold.

Nail Art How-To: Tortoise Shell Tips

You're obsessed with your tortoise shell sunglasses, so why not try this tortoise shell design on your digits? Nail artist Simcha Whitehill aka Miss Pop shows you how to recreate this look in just four easy steps.

1. Prep. File nails into desired shape, then push back cuticles — DO NOT CUT THEM! — and apply one coat of a non-quick dry topcoat. From this point on you'll want to complete the entire look on one nail at a time, and you'll have to work fast so that you can get all of the colors down while the topcoat (which usually takes longer to dry compared to a basecoat) is wet. This will help sheer out each polish, so that the other colors you apply will pop through, giving you that tortoise shell effect. 

2. Paint on some yellow lacquer. Using the brush that comes with the bottle, apply a few strokes of a shimmery, sheer yellow polish over your nail. India used Ciate Fairground Loop the Loop here.

3. Add on a few strokes of a caramel-colored polish. Do this while the yellow hue from step two is still wet. India used HippxRGB in F3.

4. Pop on some brown polish to finish off the look. India used Essie Little Brown Dress to finish off the tortoise shell effect.

Hair How-To: Double-Twisted Low Pony

 If you're tired of just throwing your hair into a low pony, try this sexy twist instead with the help of these steps from Dominick Pucciarello, a celebrity stylist at Mizu Salon in NYC.

1. Apply a thickening product to add texture, and then twist. "First you're going to want to add a little grip to your hair so the twists are full and stay in place, part your hair down the center, and then start twisting your hair on either side of your part, gathering the hair along your hairline until you reach the nape of your neck," Pucciarello says. Loni used Oribe Dry Texture Spray here.

2. Bobby pin the twists into place. This keeps them from unraveling.

3. Create a low ponytail at the nape of your neck to secure the style.

4. Wrap a section of hair around the hair tie. "Take a small section of hair from the underside of the ponytail and wrap it around the elastic band to conceal the hair tie," he says. "Then, spritz your hair with a flexible hold hairspray to finish the look." 

Voila! A gorgeous, easy style in seconds.

Makeup How-To: Beautiful Blonde Brows

If you have blonde hair and your brows appear basically non-existent IRL and in photos, use these tips from makeup artist Lauren Cosenza. Her brow-to will show you how to fill in barely-there blonde eyebrows for a pretty, natural look.

1. Comb through your eyebrows. "Use a spoolie brush to work your eyebrows into a slightly upward direction," Cosenza says.

2. Determine where your brows should begin. "Holding a slant-tip brush vertically along the side of your nose, line it up with your brow to figure out where you should start filling in your arches," she says. Erica used MAC Cosmetics 208 brush.

3. Figure out where the tail of your brow should end. "Holding the end of the same brush that you used in step two by the tip of your nose, direct the tip of the brush toward the outer corner of your eye at a 45 degree angle," Cosenza says. "This is where the tail of the brow should end." 

4. Use an eyebrow pencil to draw the brow shape. Lightly fill in sparse spots of your brow with a blonde pencil, since it's more subtle than a regular brown pencil. That way you won't go overboard when you shade it in. Erica used Laura Mercier's Eye Brow Pencil in Ash Blonde. 

5. Apply brow powder to fill in your eyebrow. With the same slant-tip brush you've been using and a brow powder that's one shade lighter than your hairs, comb through your brows using backward and then forward strokes to diffuse the brow powder. This way your arches will look more natural. Erica swiped on Amazing Cosmetics Brow Powder in Blonde.

6. Clean the edges above and below the brow. Using a color correcting cover-up and a concealer brush, diffuse any harsh lines with around the top and bottom of your brow.

Makeup How-To: Bold Pink Pout

Going out with your girls? Wear a loud lip like this one to A) instantly amp up your look and B) get noticed ASAP. Makeup artist Lauren Cosenza shows you how to get these pretty pink lips stat.

1. Exfoliate the lips with a clean, small mascara wand. Using a RickyCare mascara wand, Su lightly rubbed her lips with the wand bristles to prepare them for the lip color. "This helps exfoliate away dead skin cells, so the pink color goes on smoothly," Cosenza says.

2. Line your lips with an anti-feathering liner. "When using such a vibrant hue, you'll want to prevent the color from bleeding by outlining the boarder of the lips with a lip liner," she says. Su used No Bleeding Lips.

3. Coat your lips with a bright pink lip color. Using a small lip brush, apply a pop of pink color to your lips. Su mixed Bobbi Brown’s Hot Berry and Atomic Pink.

4. Add gloss the center of your lips. For a patent-leather finish, add a super shiny gloss to the center of your mouth. Try Lancôme Juicy Tubes in clear.

5. Use concealer to clean up the edges of the lips. To really make your pout pop, line the outside of the lipcolor with a cream concealer, such as Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer, with a thin concealer brush.

Hair How-To: A Flirty Fishtail Braid

Who doesn't want a sexy fishtail braid like the one Ryan Trygstad, hairstylist from Sally Hershberger salon, created below? Scroll down for the how-to and then wear this style like it's your job.

1. Part your hair and then tease it. "Part your hair using a rattail comb, apply Sally Hershberger's Major Body Volumizing Style Boost at the root only, and then backcomb your entire head to create fullness," Trygstad says.

2. Toss your hair over your left shoulder and split your hair into two sections. This sets it up to be a side braid.

3. Begin braiding. "Start by using small sections and bringing the outside of each section inward, crossing it over to the other section and repeating," he says. "Continue braiding until you've almost reached the ends." 

4. Give your braid texture. Once you reach two inches from the ends, twist your braid once, and then run your other hand up the braid to make it more textured and deconstructed, he adds. "This way it looks imperfect and worn in." 

5. Secure the braid. Tie the ends in one knot like you're tying a shoelace. Once your ends have been knotted, pinch the two ends of hair together, and slide a bobby pin up into the middle of the knot to secure it. 

Tada! A sexy fishtail braid that's perfect to wear day or night.

Hair How-To: The Sweetheart Braid

This hairstyle has love written all over it. Want to recreate this work of art? Use these steps from Dominick Pucciarello, a celebrity stylist at Mizu Salon in NYC.

1. Part your hair and start braiding. "To create this heart-shaped braid, you have to first part your hair down the center from your forehead to the crown of your head, and then make two triangular sections on both sides of the center part," Pucciarello says. "Next, begin braiding your hair from the top point of the triangular section, down along the part, and then along your hairline toward your ear." 

2. Continue braiding your hair until you reach the nape of your neck. "Once you get to the tip of your ear, start adding in hair from the back section that falls on the right side of the heart," he says. "Continue braiding along the hairline, and then once you reach the middle of your neck, secure the right braid with a ponytail holder. Next, repeat step one and two on the left side of your head."

3. Combine the two braids and secure with an elastic band. "Both braids should be tied off, meeting at the back of your head," he says. "From there, take the two sections and combine them into a simple three-section braid, weaving the three sections of hair together until you reach the ends. Lastly, keep the style in plae with a hair band that's the same color of your strands."

Hair How-To: The New French Twist

This new unfinished French Twist is cooler than the plastics in Mean Girls. To recreate it at home, hairstylist Britney Williams walks you through the steps below.

1. Blow dry your hair away from your face. Here, Brenna used a Maison Pearson boar bristle paddle brush and a blow dryer with a nozzle to help focus the air and brush her hair away from her face to get it all going in the right direction.

2. Create a bend in your hair with a curling iron. You don't want a full-on curl for this style — just a little wave. "So, what I do to get this look usually is wrap pieces of hair in sections of different sizes around a two-inch barrel curling iron for a just second to give it a bit of a bend," Williams says. 

3. Apply a texturizing cream. Scoop out a dime-size amount of texturizing cream with your fingers and spread it evenly onto both hands, warming it between your palms first. Then, rake your hair back away from your face lightly using your fingertips to give the hair a little hold. Brenna used Bumble and Bumble Thickening Creme Contour here. 

4. Twist the tail. Pull your hair back in a low pony, and then twist the tail around your thumb until your hair is tight and close to your head.

5. Pin the twist. Take a few U-pins and secure the twist flat to the scalp. Be sure to pin it along the rolled side, and don't worry about the strands peeking out of the bottom of the twist — that's what gives this style the cool-girl effect.

6. Continue pinning until it's secure along the rolled side.

Voila! You're done and you look damn good.

Makeup How-To: Applying Concealer for Flawless Skin

Since Beyoncé is the only one who wakes up like this, the rest of us earthlings might need a little help in how-to-get-gorgeous-skin department. Makeup artist Sara Biria is here to show and tell exactly how to get a perfect complexion, just by following this concealer map.

1. Prep your face. Wash with a gentle cleanser and then moisturize, so that your concealer goes on smoothly. 

2. Target the areas of your face that you'd like to even out with concealer. To conceal trouble spots, like dark circles or redness around your nose, apply a liquid concealer that's the same shade or one shade slightly lighter than your skin tone. Use a concealer brush to dot it on above the brow, along the brow bone, under your eyes, along the corners of your mouth, on your chin, and around your nostrils. Model Brenna used Yves Sant Laurent Touche Eclat Radiant Touch in 2 and 3. “This formula is a thicker consistency than foundation, so you can even skip applying a base to your face," Biria says. "You basically just need concealer to camouflage certain spots and if it's enough for you, then great. If it isn't, then you're going to want to apply foundation first and then continue with this step." 

3. Blend the concealer. Using a flat concealer brush, pat the brush against your skin to spread the product evenly. 

4. Look at your face in the mirror to be sure everything is blended properly. If the concealer isn't blended enough yet, take a makeup sponge, dampen the tip of it with water, and work the concealer outward to diffuse any lines of demarcation.

Boom. Flawless skin in a minute flat that even Bey would be jealous of.

1. Prep and paint. "After you've filed your nails into an almond shape, pushed back your cuticles" — remember, DO NOT CUT THEM! — "and applied a basecoat, paint a small diagonal oval from the left side of your nail almost to the right side," Whitehill says. She used Tom Ford Nail Lacquer in Carnal Red.

2. Create the other half of the heart. "Make the same oval shape, starting from the right side of the nail to almost the left side, completing the heart," she says. "Then, apply a clear top coat and you're done!"

Now go out there and break some hearts!

Makeup How-To: Gorgeous Gilded Cat Eye

Want to switch up your usual smoky eye for something a little lighter, but still super sexy? Makeup artist Lauren Cosenza shows you how to perfectly create a golden cat eye with ease.

1. Press gold pigments onto the center of the eyelid and the inner corner of your eye. Ariel blended on Bare Escentuals True Gold Eyeshadow and MAC Cosmetics Pigment in Blonde’s Gold using a flat eyeshadow brush.

2. Dust matte brown eyeshadow into the crease of your eye and onto outer corner with a crease brush, plus run beneath lower lashline. Try NYX Cosmetics' Nude Matte Shadow in Underneath it All.

3. Add depth by subtly layering black eyeshadow onto the outer corner of your eye and blending. Ariel used a smudge brush to apply MAC Cosmetics Carbon here.

4. Sweep a matte cream eyeshadow over your browbone. Ariel used a blending brush to apply MAC Cosmetics Eyeshadow in Blanc Type.

5. Make the gold pigments that are already on your eye pop with added shimmer, using Victoria’s Secret Hypergloss Eyegloss in Golden Lights.

6. Create a cat eye. "Swipe Benefit Magic Ink Jet Black Liquid Eyeliner along your top lashline, and then up and outward for a precise winged look," Cosenza says. "Clean up with Almay Remover swabs, and then finish with black mascara on your upper and lower lashes." Ariel used L’Oréal Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara.

Done! A gorgeous golden cat eye that will light up a room in under five minutes flat!

3. Sweep on a royal blue eyeshadow. "Using an eyeshadow brush, apply a bright royal blue eyeshadow over your eyelid from your lash line to your brow bone," Cosenza says. Try Almay Shadow Softies Eyeshadow in Midnight Sky.  

4. Blend on some more blue hues. With a fluffy blending brush, sweep on Bobbi Brown’s Blue Denim Eyeshadow from lash line to crease to create a rich look. Then, add a navy shadow into the crease for depth. Try Burberry Sheer Eyeshadow in Midnight Blue No.20

5. Add eyeliner. "Finish by running a shimmery blue liner over your entire lid, keeping it away from the crease to maintain the two different blue shades," she says. Ashley used NYX Cosmetics Slide On Pencil in Sunrise Blue here.

Layer on loose glitter. "Using an old flat makeup brush, like this one, while the second coat of navy polish is almost dry (aka it's a little tacky to the touch), pat on a loose teal glitter — which you can pick up at any beauty supply store — and start applying it midway down your nail, concentrating more of the glitter toward the tip of your nail for an ombré effect," she says. Nail Art How-To: New Year's Day Nails

Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one... Happy New Year! To ring in 2014, nail artist Simcha Whitehill aka Miss Pop shows and tells Cosmo exactly how to copy this New Year's mani. 

1. Prep and paint. "After you've filed your nails into the desired shape, pushed back your cuticles" — remember, DO NOT CUT THEM!— "and applied a basecoat, paint your nails with two coats of a teal polish," says Whitehill. Used here was Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer in On The Beach.

2. Ombré the tip of your nail. "Using a bright, primary blue shade, like Essie Nail Polish in Butler Please, paint the corner of a triangular makeup sponge, and then dab the sponge downward from the tip of your nail to the center, creating a gradated effect," she says.

3. Add some sparkle. Paint a clear, sparkly polish over the ombré part of your nail. Try China Glaze Luxe and Lush.

4. Paint on 2014. Dip a striper brush into silver nail lacquer and paint 2014 in Roman numerals — MMXIV — one letter per finger.

Voilà! Happy Nail Year!

Nail Art How-To: A Klimt-Inspired Mani

When in doubt of what kind of nail art to try, why not turn to real art for ideas? For a modern twist, recreate Gustav Klimt's painting of the Hope II.

Nail artist Simcha Whitehill aka Miss Pop shows and tells Cosmo exactly how to copy this Klimt-inspired masterpiece. 

1. Prep and paint. "After you've filed your nails into the desired shape, pushed back your cuticles" — remember, DO NOT CUT THEM! — "and applied a basecoat, paint your nails with an orange-y red polish to create the backdrop of the painting," says Whitehill. Our model used Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer in Lara's Theme.

2. Create gold ovals all over your nail. "Using the brush that comes in the bottle of a gold metallic polish, create two or three big ovals randomly on each nail," she says. Try Essie's Good As Gold.

3. Now, add tiny circles. Dip the small end of a dotter tool or the ball tip of a bobby pin into the same gold polish that you used above, and create little gold dots all around the bigger dots.

4. Finish the masterpiece with some jewel-toned polish. "Using the small end of the dotter tool or the ball tip of a bobby pin, dip the end into jewel-toned and black nail polishes, like Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer in Fade To Black — an opaque black, Essie Nail Polish in Going Incognito — an emerald green, and Orly Nail Polish in Rio — a royal purple, and then randomly dot those colors inside some of the gold dots," she says.

Hair How-To: A Beautiful Bow Style

Let's be honest, you know you want to wear this cute bow look to the next party you're going to. Matt Fugate, a stylist at the Sally Hershberger Downtown Salon, is here to help you tie one on in just four simple steps.

1. Pull your hair up on top of your head. "Be sure that when you pull it up, you flip the ends of your hair forward and then grab your hair, creating a bubble," Fugate says. "Then, wrap an elastic hair band around the base of the folded hair to anchor the style."

2. Separate the bubble of hair down the middle. This creates the bow's sides.

3. Finish off the bow. "Grab the ends of your hair and wrap them toward the back of your head down the center of the parted sides," he says. "This section of hair serves as the center part of the bow and finishes the look."

4. Pin your style into place. Use a few bobby pins to keep the center strands from springing forward and to secure your entire bow hairstyle.

Done and done. Now slip on that sexy freakum dress and go!
