The Ultimate Sex Toy Guide for Lesbian* Couples

If you’ve felt like the majority of sex-toy articles you’ve come across in the past have catered to heterosexual pairings, and you’re all *blank stare* “That does not concern me or my needs,” then today is your lucky day (slash tonight is your lucky night WINK WINK).

Last week I took myself down to Toys in Babeland, a wonderful queer-owned, sex-positive shop in Brooklyn (there are also locations in Manhattan and Seattle), and talked to Claire Cavanah, the company’s co-founder. Armed with my notebook and pen, along with some basic knowledge gleaned from previous, non-research related trips to Babeland, Claire showed me the ins-and-outs (GET IT) of toys that can add enjoyment for both/all parties in lesbian sexcapades.

Truth be told, most sex toys can be used for any and all bodies in any and all couples or groupings. All you need is a little creativity, an open mind, and possibly some lube. So! Lesbians, and pretty much anyone else, here are some basics in gettin’ it on with a little help from your (sex-toy) friends.

Do all lesbians use strap-ons? Nope. Do some of us? Yup.

For those of you who enjoy penetration, or who are doin’ it and doin’ it well with someone who enjoys penetration, strap-ons can be super fun and also come in a variety of shapes and sizes (both in the harness and the dildo department!) Here are the basics of what you can find in the land of strap-ons:

The Harness

Choice Number One: Leather vs. Cloth
Leather Harnesses, like the “Jaguar,” ($95) last for a very long time, mold to your body with repeated use, and warm to the touch.

Cloth Harnesses, like Spareparts’ “Joque,” ($120) are soft, and adjust with velcro instead of buckles (for swift adjustments when speed is of the essence), and also often have additional pockets for small vibrators! “Joque” has two pockets, one for a small bullet vibrator for the receiving party, and another for a bullet vibrator for the wearer!

Choice Number Two: To Strap or Not to Strap
There's also the “RodeoH” harness, ($45) which is basically tight-fitting underwear that will hold your favorite dildo. The beauty of going sans-straps is the ease of use (everyone knows how to put on a pair of underwear), and also the fact that these can go in the laundry just like any other article of clothing! In my humble lesbian opinion, this means you’ll probably get a lot more use out of said strap-on.

The Dildo

Choosing a dildo requires a few decisions as well. The most obvious, perhaps, is size. You can go small, large, straight, curved… the options in Dildo-land are virtually endless.

Appearance is also a factor. Some dildo-users are after authenticity: they want their parts to look like the real deal, right down to the balls (which will totally fit in the Joque!). Others would rather have the fun without making an actual-penis visual connection, and so may choose a dildo that looks as far from the real thing as possible.

Material is also a factor. If you are using your dildo with a strap on — silicone is the name of the game. If you are going hands-on over strap-on, though, there are glass and stainless steel options which are very skilled at targeting the g-spot (plus, using your hands gives you added control).

Lastly, if you and your partner are both penetration fans, check this out: you can use a double-sided dildo like the Feeldoe in many of the harnesses so that the wearer and the receiver are both getting what they seek. Boom.

(Bandit, $116; Rainbow Amor, $65; Feeldoe, $150.)

Yes, skin-to-skin contact is a wonderful thing, but let’s not underestimate the power of batteries and silicone. For those of you who are into shakin’ / rattlin’ / rollin’ while bonin’, here are some killer vibrators that can pack a real one-two punch.

Hello Touch Fingertip Vibes, $65: Combine the ability to touch your human with a BATTERY POWERED PACK. What more do we need to say, really.

JimmyJane’s Form Vibes, $145: Form vibrators are top-of-the-line wonderful, completely waterproof, and offer various ways of interacting with your partner. The Form 3 is shaped like a tongue, if that’s what you’re into, and the Form 4 is able to be held in place with your legs while doing other things with your hands (including sexting for all you long distance-ers!)

WeVibes, $159: WeVibes offer dual stimulation and can be worn during penetration to increase all the good feelings in all the right places. This is basically like having your cake and also cookies and eating them all and then getting brownies. Tadaaa.

Minna Ola, $149: The Minna doesn’t have settings, it responds to your touch. The more pressure you put on the Minna, the more intense the vibration. It’s like a smartphone for your vagina. Get out of my face. *buys Minna*

Claire told me that clitoral nerve endings go all the way back around our bodies to near our butts and it’s all connected and then she started singing “The Circle of Life.” Just kidding about the singing… not kidding about anything else. If you or your boo are into touchin’ butts, my takeaway was that NJoy is where it’s at.

Njoy Stainless Plugs, $65 - $300: The dude who makes Njoy stainless steel toys started out as a BICYCLE MAKER and was like, “I can use my skills for further good in the form of this stainless steel plug you can pop in your butt for orgasms that make your head explode.” Njoys come in various shapes and sizes and amazing little cases. GO GET ONE, WHAT’S STOPPING YOU.

You. Guys. The amount of fun you can have with blindfolds and feathers and handcuffs and whips or paddles or whatever you like, I don’t know you, is pretty amazing. I was super into the Under The Bed Restraints, $58, which allow you to do all your tyin’ up WITHOUT EVEN NEEDING A HEADBOARD. Just put the straps under your mattress and BLAM-O you can cuff your partner (or yourself, Houdini) down to the bed.

Bonus Prize (or Reason to Hate the World): There is also something called The Fifty Shades of Grey Submit to Me Beginners Kit, $56, which includes blindfold, restraints, a paddle, and more. *puts head into hands**contemplates life*

Never leave home without it. Things are always more fun when they are lubricated. Well, most things, anyway. Water based lube is the go-to if you are using it with toys, as the chemical makeup of most toys will break down with silicon lube. Silicone lube is great for sans-toy play, as it lasts for a million years (approximately).

NEWSFLASH: There is this awesome Babeland lube that is a water/silicone hybrid, called Babeland Silk, $16, which is safe for toys AND lasts a long time. Blamo.

A Real Girl's Guide to Going Sheer

Sheer clothing has been allover the runways and the red carpet, and we don't think it's going anywhere just because fall is setting in. Though we certainly are not planning on taking it as far as Miss Erin Wasson over here, we are digging ensembles with tasteful sheer accents and hints of skin. So we enlisted the help of; Maidenform Fashion Director, Norah Alberto, to get the scoop on how to feel confident wearing this high-fashion peek-a-boo trend without looking tacky.

Only One Item at a Time: Don't go overboard with this one! "Never wear two pieces of sheer clothing at the same time," says Alberto. "A blouse in a neutral color is one of the easiest ways to wear this look."

Layer if Wearing Sheer at Work: While it may seem like this is a trend that can't be worn in the office, there are ways to make it look professional. Try a solid nude tank or camisole underneath a sheer top and paired with a tailored blazer. Or if you're going for a bolder look, try a color or patterned long sleeve see-through shirt and a solid slim pant. "Depending on the print and color, I still like a solid, tailored tank, but you can play with color here," says Alberto. Also be sure to keep accessories to a minimum—let the sheer piece make the statement.

Play with Sheer Accents for Date Night: "Sheer can look amazing as an accent to a little black dress," Alberto explains. Try a dress with sheer panels or simple sheer accents and wear with a flesh toned slip. If you'd prefer to wear jeans and heels on your night out, try a sheer blouse, but amp up the sexiness with a textured cami underneath, like lace!

When in Doubt, Accentuate the Top Half of Your Body: If you're unsure how you want to rock the sheer trend, pick a piece of clothing that accentuates the top half of your body. "The neck and shoulder areas are safe to reveal, while still giving off a hint of sexy," Alberto explains. Another chic option? Matching your tank under the sheer blouse to your pants—it will create an elongated look.

Never Pair a Sheer Blouse with Just a Bra: This one is better left for the models, as Alberto says! "Wearing simply a bra with a sheer top just doesn't translate the same way in everyday life," she explains. "Before you leave the house, take a long look in the mirror—especially since, with the sheer trend, everyone will be seeing a lot of you!"

The Cosmo Guide to Hot Honeymoon Sex

There is likely no erotic experience more looked forward to than honeymoon sex. But while you embark on this post-wedding vacay with a serious emotional high, the honeymoon itself isn’t necessarily a guaranteed Festival of Orgasms…and that's totally okay. To get the deets on what to expect, and how to make your honeymoon hot, we put some questions to a trio of seasoned sexperts.

Q. What's the biggest myth about post-wedding sex?

There's a good chance you won't have sex on your wedding night. Mind blown? Sex therapist Laurie J. Watson, author of Wanting Sex Again, How to Rediscover Your Desire and Heal a Sexless Marriage, says: "This night holds powerful expectations for most couples, but even a young bride and groom can be unprepared for the exhaustion that can hit them after ceremony, cake and Champagne." If you end up falling asleep in each other's arms, rather than doing the deed post-reception, it's really no big deal. Look forward to the blissful morning sex to come!

Q: How can you maximize your honeymoon for hot sex?

If you really want to have a lot of lovin,' don't try to keep up with the Joneses in terms of who had the coolest, most exotic, most exciting honeymoon, Watson advises. "A huge ceremony followed by a big vacation with sight-seeing at breakneck pace only predicts a tired couple coming back to busy lives, extra debt, and a photo-log without the relaxation," she says. "To kick-off an exciting sex life, take a week laying on a beach, lifting your heads only to drink little umbrella drinks, make love in the morning and then again with sun-kissed, coconut-smelling skin."

Q: Can sex really be "better" on your honeymoon?

Sexpert Emily Morse, coauthor of Hot Sex: Over 200 Things You Can Try Tonight, says that honeymoon sex has the potential to be some of the hottest you’ve experienced yet. Pre-wedding, your sex life may have taken a nosedive—all of that planning stress can take it’s toll—and then you just went through a super emotional ceremony, bonding you and your guy even closer, which can rev your sex drive to new heights. "Now that you’re away from it all it’s time to really get it on," she says.

Q: What are some of the common expectations couples have about honeymoon sex—and how accurate are they in reality?

While sex might be hotter after you've just been bonded in holy matrimony, you might not have as much of it as you think. "Dispel all expectations that the honeymoon is supposed to be a 24/7 romance-fest where you’ll be making slow, sensual love on a bed of rose petals the entire trip," Morse says.

Certified sex expert Nikki Ransom-Alfred adds that, unlike what you might see in the movies, in real life, couples are usually so exhausted from the wedding that they aren't able to have that constant wild, animalistic sex that everyone thinks they're supposed to have.

Q: So how can couples make honeymoon sex memorable without overhyping it?

"Don't compare your honeymoon sex to what you may see on television and movies," Ransom-Alfred advises. "You don't want to go into your honeymoon with unrealistic expectations or anxieties—you want things to be relaxed and natural and to just enjoy taking this extremely beautiful step with each other and not worrying about living up to any hype."

Morse says you should give each other permission to just relax on your honeymoon and make the time away a "pressure-free zone" when it comes to sex. "Only do what makes you both feel good. Hopefully that will include warm baths, long walks, cat naps and lots of foreplay," she says.

Q. What can couples do to make honeymoon sex memorable?

Our experts say, to hell with customs, and don't be shy about packing a vibrator, or even somebondage tape, to have some fun props on hand in case you wanna spice things up. Watson also has two sexy suggestions while you're enjoying your vaycay: "Order strawberries and Champagne before dinner and make love tipsy before going out, or show off your exhibitionism on the dance floor and grind on each other, then go back to the hotel room and rip your clothes off. (Hot.)

Q. What should first-timers be aware of when it comes to honeymoon sex?

If you're going to be having sex for the first time on your honeymoon, take it slowly, says Watson, "Good sex requires lots of knowledge about each other’s arousal patterns, a good anatomy map, her self-acquaintance with her body’s responsiveness, shared expectations, freedom from inhibition, low anxiety, and practice, practice, practice—things rather hard to come by for inexperienced lovers," she says. So, drink a little Champagne first, use some lube, and remember that there's going to be a learning curve here. No one gets it right the first time.

Q. When women pick out lingerie for their honeymoons, what should they look for?

Ransom-Alfred says don't be afraid to think outside the box when it comes to sexy honeymoon attire. "Pick out lingerie with garter belts with the suspenders and stockings or maybe a crotchless body stocking," she says. "Really crotchless anything should be brought on your honeymoon." She also suggests asking your fiancé to choose some of his favorite items, and then you can surprise him with the one you like best during your honeymoon.

Q: What's this "honeymoonitis" we've heard about?

Honeymoonitis (a.k.a. bladder infections from frequent sex) can totally derail honeymoon sex, Watson says. She suggests taking cranberry extract pills daily to prevent the condition from cropping up before or during your trip (ask your doctor about what dosage is right for you).

She also notes that just because you're on your honeymoon, that doesn’t mean you're immune to bodily disasters, like Montezuma’s revenge or yeast infections, not to mention thing like birth control failures or sexual dysfunction, which can all sabotage the most erotic of honeymoon plans. "Unfortunately, fate doesn’t recognize this as a sacred week, she says. "Every honeymoon will have at least one thing go awry. Sex is a lifelong work-in-progress with ups and downs, challenges and successes."
