I’ve Got That Warm, Holiday Feeling

Justin was leaving to go home for Christmas after work today, so he invited me over last night to watch a movie and dry hump on his couch. I added that last part obviously.

Justin and I are in this weird phase where we’re not a couple, but we are “seeing” each other, and I am lost as to what the gift-giving etiquette of this arrangement is. I’ve either had a boyfriend or been really single for the holidays, so I’ve never had to sift through this in-between relationship business before.

“Do not get him a present,” Ashley cautioned me as we did some last minute shopping on our lunch breaks. “Think how awkward it will be if you get him a present and he doesn’t get you one.”

“But won’t it be awkward if he gets me a present and I don’t get him one?” “Jos, not to be mean, but I highly doubt he is getting you a present. Eric barely got you a present and you dated for five years.”

“Yeah, but Eric was a dick,” I said.

Ashley picked up a tin of cookies. “Then get him something small, like this.”

So I showed up at Justin’s apartment last night armed with sweets and a bottle of wine.

“Merry Christmas!” I said when he opened the door, offering the tin of macaroons up to him like a sacrifice.

Justin took the bow off the tin and stuck it on my shirt.

He said, with a completely straight face, “You’re my present this year.”

I snapped my fingers and pointed at him. “That’s from that really obnoxious coffee commercial that needs to just go away already.”

“It is,” Justin said as he pulled me into him, the cookies and wine squished between us. “But I also meant it.” He gave me a big kiss. Mmmm.

I sat down on the couch while Justin went into the kitchen to pour the wine. He came back with two glasses in hand, set them on the coffee table, then reached into his pocket and retrieved a small gift box.

“Are you proposing to me?” I asked.

Justin laughed. “It’s just something small.” He handed it to me. “It made me think of you.”

I opened the box. Inside was a delicate gold charm bracelet. The charm was a sneaker. Goddamn you Ashley and all your terrible advice!

“Justin.” I put my hand on my chest. “Wow, this is beautiful.”

Justin sat down next to me. “You like it?”

“I love it.” Justin fastened the bracelet around my wrist. “I just feel so bad, I didn’t know we were doing real gifts.”

Justin waved his hand at me. “Josie, it’s nothing. I don't even think it’s real gold.”

“Well don’t tell me that,” I swatted his arm.

Justin caught my hand and pulled me towards him. He kissed me and pressed his body against me, pushing me back until I was lying down and he was on top of me. I was so happy to be making out inside, on a piece of comfortable furniture, I could barely contain myself. Things got really heated—we were grinding against each other and he had his hands under my shirt. Even though I wanted to go further, I pulled away.

“Maybe we should put the movie on?”

Justin nodded. Reluctantly, I might add.

We flipped through the On Demand options, and somehow, randomly, decided on I Am Legend. Neither of us had ever seen it and Justin loves thrillers (shocker!). I don’t mind them, and I’m kind of into the whole zombie trend. Also, I’d once read that scary movies are an aphrodisiac.

Unfortunately, the movie ended up being a total mood-killer when we got to the part where (for anyone who has not seen the movie, spoiler alert ahead!) Will Smith was forced to suffocate his dog—his only friend left in the world!—after he was infected with the zombie virus. People, when I say bawling, I am not effectively describing my reaction to this. I was red and blotchy, hiccupping like a drunken baby, and incapable of breathing through my nose. Justin had to turn the movie off I was such a mess.

“I’m sorry,” I sniffled, wiping my eyes with a paper towel. “I don't know what that was about!”

“It’s okay,” Justin said, laughing. “I just never thought a movie could cause a person this much distress.”

“This is really embarrassing,” I blubbered.

“It’s kind of funny, actually.”

“I’m glad my pain is amusing to you,” I joked.

“Ohhh, come on. Let’s watch a rerun of 30 Rock and turn that frown upside down.”

So that’s what we did. When I left, I was so sad that I wouldn't see Justin for a few days. Meltdown aside, it was one of the best dates I’ve ever been on. Merry Christmas to me.

Should You Take a 'Drink Holiday?'

After a long weekend where you might have partied a little too much (hey, it happens), we found this information out of the U.K. particularly interesting…. British politicians are trying to pass a government guideline that would recommend that citizens take two days off a week from drinking.

The idea behind this “drink holiday” is that it will give your liver a break—making you healthier in the process. Apparently, Canada already has a similar recommendation in place, but the U.S. doesn’t.

This proposed guideline comes on the heels of conflicting new research about alcohol. A series of studies have found that regularly drinking—even in moderation—raises your risk of developing several cancers, including breast cancer, as determined by the U.K.’s Million Women Study. But another major study from the National Institutes of Health found that daily moderate drinking (two drinks a day, seven days a week) is good for your heart.

As of now, the jury is out on how alcohol really affects your bod. That said, we figure you can get too much of a good thing, so really, it can’t hurt to take a few days off from hitting the bottle. Think of it as a vacay from having to shell out for happy hour.

Have you ever taken a drink holiday?
