The "Face-kini" Is Becoming a Thing

Women in Qingdao, China, are hitting the beach wearing bathing suits and "face-kinis," locally made face masks that block their skin from the sun and protect against algae and jellyfish. They come in multiple colors and can be paired with a typical bathing suit or a full wetsuit.

High fashion magazine CR Fashion Book noticed the burgeoning face-kini trend and published a photo spread of models wearing a very stylish version of the masks. The goal, according to the magazine, was to showcase "an opposing ideal of beauty altogether, with masked poolside models set out to soak up as little sun as possible."

CNN reports that middle-aged women started this trend because they felt uncomfortable showing themselves at the beach. While the face-kini is great for keeping your skin shaded from the sun, you will have an interesting situation on your hands if yours is ill-fitting and results in burns only around your eyes and mouth.

Are Long Red Nails a Thing? Vanessa Hudgens and Rihanna Think So

Nail art, step aside. Vanessa and Riri have the next tip trend in line: long, candy-apple red nails.

We got an up close and personal look at Vanessa's nails last night at the American Eagle Rock Your Walk event and they're honestly kind of awesome. They're just a bit longer than what you'd normally wear—but not eagle-talon status. Rihanna also stepped out flaunting longer-than-usual red nails (and her new gray mane) earlier this month.

"The first thought that comes to my mind when I see a long, red nail is sexy [um, hello date night!]," says nail guru Jin Soon Choi. "But this look is versatile because if you want to make it more sophisticated and glamorous, all you do is opt for an almond-shaped tip like Vanessa's. And, if you want an edgy, modern twist, copy Rihanna's square-shaped nails. In either case, just be careful not to go too long because then the nail loses its classy feel."

So why the long red-nail resurgence? "We're moving back to basics, which is why Old Hollywood crimson-colored tips are making a comeback. And with fall coming around the corner, you can count on seeing more of the simple, classic looks [like the above] with a hint of a twist, like the incorporation of matte topcoat, different lengths, and longer oval-, square-, squoval-shaped tips."

Well, you heard it here first: lengthier red-hot nails are back and we're all about it.

Skinny Speed Dating Is a Thing and We're Kinda Pissed About It

This week, we reported on a study that found that bias against bigger people—fattism—is a growing issue, ingrained in children as young as four.

And it's no wonder that our culture has become so pro-skinny: In addition to the airbrushed idealized images of women we see, well, everywhere, there are now special speed dating events for the diminutive crowd.

Speed dating site OnSpeedDating.com is offering what it calls "Skinny Minny" events, which only allow women who are size eight or below to participate. Yeah. Seriously.

But what goes into the execution of these events makes them even worse. According to The Huffington Post, women who go to the events have to wear their dress size on their nametags. Naturally, there are no such stipulations for men—guys of every size are allowed to partake in the "fun."

In fact, these speed dating sessions are specially tailored to please discerning single guys, making sure the women available perfectly suit their tastes. HuffPost cites a past event description which read: "Guys, no need to worry about meeting a biggie-size chick 'down-sizing' to an 8 like when you're dating online. We'll be checking labels at the door!" (Excuse me while I go vomit.)

Okay, fine. People have certain tastes for what they want in a partner, whether it's big, small, black, white, short, tall, emo, or preppy. I get it.

But, look, I'm one of those so-called "skinny minnies" and I am all kinds of offended by this. I have a hard time believing that any guy who would actually sign up for this crap isn't a total douchebag. A man who so much as finds the event description somewhat appealing is undateable in my book. It's not just about the concept of these events but the tone, the one-sidedness, and the fact that women are basically treated like objects, or cattle, by the way they have to display their specs on their shirts.

What self-respecting woman would voluntarily go to an event like this? All I know is, the whole situation is all about wrong.

Yes, Glossy, Bronzy Lids are a Thing

Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury created both of the glossy, bronzy-lid makeup looks at Bibhu Mohapatra (New York fashion week) and Tom Ford (London fashion week). But while this look reads super chic on the runway, we wanted to know if it's actually wearable in real life.

"Yes," is the answer to that question, per Tilbury. She told us at Bibhu that while she placed Maybelline EyeStudio Color Tattoo 24Hr Eyeshadow in Bad to The Bronze, $7, drugstore.com, all around the eye, topping it with vaseline, you can wear the tawny tone on your top eyelid only to play down the effect. But, in order to get the wet look, there has to be a gloss or petroleum jelly layered on top. This gives you that "hand-painted picture effect" that Tilbury was going for at Bibhu.

At Tom Ford, Tilbury created a similar look using the Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate Palette, $75, bergdorfgoodman.com. She swept the color over the eyelids and along the lower lash line using a brush. Next, she used a coffee-colored pencil to line the entire eye (for darker colored skin, opt for a black eye pencil). Then, just before the models walked out on the runway, she dabbed their top and bottom lids with a clear lip gloss for a reflective effect. Cool right?

Now, we get it, you're strutting your stuff down the sidewalk, not the catwalk. So, if you're not ready to rock this exact bronzy, sexpot, glossed-up look, at least try the glossy lid part—even if you forgo eyeshadow beneath it. You'll be surprised at how much the light bounces off of your eyes—and how many compliments you get.

If you try out the glossy lid look, let us know how it goes!

The Sexiest Thing You Can Do on a Date

You learn a lot about someone when you share a meal together. If your date makes the experience uptight and restrictive, well, the sex is going to be horrible too. Eating is best when there is spontaneity and variety. I'm very type-A, and many things in my life are about control and domination, but eating should be a submissive experience, where you let down your guard and enjoy the ride.

I don't have much patience for people who are self-conscious about the act of eating, and it irritates me when someone denies themselves the pleasure of a bloody hunk of steak or a pungent French cheese because of some outdated nonsense about what's appropriate or attractive. Stop worrying about how your breath's going to smell, whether there's beurre blanc on your face, or whether ordering the braised pork belly will make you look fat. Eating with abandon couldn't be more of a turn-on: it shows that you're comfortable with yourself.

A perfect date is with a person who eats without fear, prejudice, or concerns about his or her appearance. I remember one of my first dates with my wife: She ordered a six-pound lobster. I sat there, enraptured, watching her suck every bit of meat from it—she got a standing ovation from the floor staff. She's the kind of woman who will order filet mignon as an appetizer followed by a T-bone steak. Her fearless, open-minded approach to food is completely alluring.

It's also wildly exciting to be open to the unfamiliar, because it just might be delicious. And I know not everyone can travel the world like I do for my TV show. But wherever you are, you can explore. One of the best things about this country is that it's filled with people from somewhere else—you can travel the world without leaving your town. L.A. has the most vibrant Korean- food scene (we explore it on my show). In Minneapolis, you're close to amazing Vietnamese food. Atlanta and Chicago have fantastic South American and Mexican fare.

I like dive-y places like Danny Bowien's Mission Chinese Food in NYC: no wine list, no white tablecloths, no long tasting menu—no pretense at all. The night is about having a self-indulgent time without any of the intrusive notes that come with fine dining. You don't have to worry about how you look or try to impress the waiter with what you know. You can eat with a fork, chopsticks, or even your hands. It's all about the enjoyment of the moment and the company and food. And if you can be yourself slurping spicy peanut noodles in front of another person, you may have a keeper.

I promise you will go to a more intense place with your date or friend if you try something new. You don't bond with a safe order. I've eaten fermented shark. I've eaten cobra heart. (It was beating when I put it in my mouth. How to describe the taste? Think very athletic oyster.) I don't want to experience these foods again, but I'm glad I tried them. What's the worst-case scenario? You spend some extra time in the bathroom. (Admittedly, not a turn-on for most people.) But you'll have a good story to tell. You'll share an experience. And, maybe, you'll change your palate forever.

For a dinner date, I eat light all day to save room, then I go all in: I choose this meal and this order, and I choose you, the person across from me, to share it with. There's a beautiful intimacy in a meal like that. It's about exploration and taste. And kissing after dinner. And maybe there's a little wine and curry on your breath...and that's nice.

It's only when you open yourself to the adventure of the unknown, the strange, even the shocking, that you get to enjoy the sensual, passionate, joyful experience of sharing food and drink. And it sets the stage for whatever might follow.

Anthony Bourdain stars in the new show Parts Unknown, which airs weekends beginning in April on CNN.
