Unexpected Crush Alert: Miles Teller

As the cocksure ne'er-do-well Sutter Keely in The Spectacular Now, Miles Teller fully embodies that guy in high school. You know, the smooth-talking slightly douchey-type who's just damaged enough to give you an "I can save him" complex. Enter the sweet Aimee Finecky (played by Shailene Woodley) with a heart so golden it naturally gets bent out of shape over Sutter. Okay, we did too, even though we know better than to fall for his kind (cough, yeah right, cough). We're calling it now: Miles Teller is the new John Cusack circa Say Anything. Strolling into our office adorably wrinkled and husky-voiced after a night of post-VMA hard partying (he was running on an hour of sleep), Teller bowled us over with his bravado. Just when you thought you were over the cocky types...

What were you like in high school?

I had the popularity thing down. I was Homecoming King but I was in all AP classes. I played alto saxophone in Jazz Band and drums in a rock band. I was the president of the Drama Club. I was in National Honor Society and Student Council for a little bit. But then me and my buddies also threw the parties. We were buying kegs for the seniors when we were 16.

So what you're saying is you pretty much are Sutter Keely?

Yeah, when I filmed [The Spectacular Now], I thought that I was very much like Sutter only my parents are still together and I have two older sisters who are very affectionate. I basically had every tool to succeed.

Did you only go out with popular girls?

No, I dated an Aimee. I dated this chick who sang in my rock band, who my buddies were like, "Pretty weird call." But then I dated my sister's friend at one point, who was a cheerleader. And then my other girlfriend was from out of town, which I think is the way to go. In high school, I would never would have dated a girl one of my buddies had hooked up with.

Your character is a borderline alcoholic. Are you a big partier?

I'm from Florida so I've been known to shotgun a beer. Fun fact: I can't chug a beer, but I can shotgun one!

Do you like party girls?

Not really, but at the same time, it's nice to be with a girl who can handle herself. Like, my ex could go to a party, navigate [the room] and talk to everyone. I wouldn't have to hold her hand.

She wasn't dancing on the tables?

No, I dance on tables.

What's up with your chin scars?

I got in a bad car accident six years ago. I got ejected out of the passenger window of my buddy's car. He was driving and lost control. We flipped 8 times and I flew out the window. The car stopped rolling and I was like 30 feet from the car unconscious and covered in blood. I've had laser surgeries which are the same thing they do for tattoo removal. It's pretty painful and you smell your skin burning.

Dude! Glad you're okay. So since this is Cosmo, we've got to talk about sex. Is doing it on a first date a dealbreaker?

I don't see anything wrong with it. I've started relationships after sleeping with someone on the first date. But I think that if people are going on dates that's good, you know? It's nice to meet a girl and ask her out on a date, as opposed to keeping it casual.

Do you call girls, or do you only text?

I call. I hate texting. I find it frustrating.

Guess that means no one's getting any emojis from you.

No! They're so weird! I feel like that should be some kind of guy code. All of my best friends are from high school and we have an ongoing text message. I have one buddy who always sends me wink faces and LOL's and stuff. I don't even LOL—I think that's whack.

So you're pairing up with Shailene again for Divergent. Are you guys tight?

Yeah. I love Shailene, she's my girl. It's a very sibling-like kind of relationship.

Have you ever been starstruck?

The first time I saw Leo [DiCaprio], that was something. People shit on Leo all the time. I'm a big fan. I've probably seen every movie that he's ever done.

Same. Thoughts on online dating?

It's weird. Have you seen Catfish?! But I thought Tinder was cool.

Are you on Tinder?

No, I was for a minute. I think it's smart. It gets rid of having to go up and ask for somebody's number because basically you already do since you can message them.

Current celebrity crushes?

My first one was Reese Witherspoon—hardcore when I was younger. Now? Rihanna. I love her hair—that little mullet, it's very rock. I just met her last night [at the VMAs]. And by that I mean that I just said hi to her, but I felt like we had a moment.

Freebie Alert: Estée Lauder Gift Set

moving cross country, finding a great partner... or lobbing off all your hair a la Karlie Kloss). But don't fret: It's not an impossible task. It just takes some thought—and great advice.

"A lot of times people don't like what they're doing in their current job, but they haven't defined what they want to be doing in their potential new job," Nicole Williams, career expert and author of Girl On Top, tells Cosmopolitan.com.

She says nabbing your dream job starts with doing some soul-searching: "I ask people to assess components of their current working life, and match them against the career they are looking to get into."

Try asking yourself these questions...

Time: How many hours do you want to work and in what kind of environment? Big company, small, telecommute, work-from-home flexibility (you know, the kind banned at Yahoo!)

Challenge Level: How important is growth potential and being challenged to you? Are you ambitious and ready to lean in, or just looking for a 9 to 5 to fill your time?

Work Environment: Define your best possible scenario in terms of work relationships. Who are you working with and for? What kind of boss would be ideal? Do you have dreams of becoming a boss?

Passion: How important is passion to you? For example, a woman we know races triathlons and feels like she doesn't need to be passionate about her job; her passion is attached to her sport.

6. Money: How much do you need to make? How much money do you want to make?

Steps To Making A Career Change

Stop Delaying

"The longer you are in the job you are thinking of leaving, the further away you are from new opportunity," says Williams. "It doesn't get any easier. Doing it earlier is emotionally, mentally and professionally better."

Be Willing To Sacrifice Something

You may have to start from the bottom (or the middle) and work your way to the top; Either way, be ready to drop a few rungs on the corporate ladder.

"Internships can be a good idea—or be willing to take a pay cut," says Williams. "If this internship, for example, introduces you to influential people and helps develop a skill-set, you'll be able to take these things to leverage them into a bigger position."

Start Saving

"Have a solid idea of the risk and savings in the bank," advises Williams. Even if it means cutting back on luxuries. "If you know the internship is going to last for six months at a minimum, that's the number you need to have in savings, and I normally advise 10 to 20 percent in savings as a risk buffer."

Network

"People love to talk about themselves," says Williams. "Find them on LinkedIn and through people you know, and consult with them."

Williams suggests asking those in similar fields questions like, "I wonder if you'd speak to me about your day-to-day life; What do you love most about the work that you do; What do you wish you would have known going into this career?"

"Those kind of questions are going to give you the information you need and will help you know the people you are going to need to know," she adds.

Now that you are armed with more than just your resume and a fresh manicure, it's time to start hitting the pavement. Happy hunting, gals.

Freebie Alert: Estée Lauder Gift Set

Meet the Beauty Bloggers

Carly Cardellino: I'm the beauty and fashion editor here at Cosmopolitan.com. I'll try just about anything once (I have the crop cut—my hair used to be super-long—and body wave to prove it) and then report back. I'm obsessed with hair products, like volumizers and salt sprays, as well as mascara, nail polish, a good foundation (right now I'm using Tom Ford Beauty Traceless Foundation SPF 15), and blush (it literally changes the way you look in seconds)—hopefully you can see why I'm in this business. I also love picking out head-to-toe outfits for friends whether they're going on a date with their guy or a black-tie wedding—so feel free to click on that "contact" link below and send me a question.

Leah Wyar: Ladies, I’m the DIY beauty guru. My specialties? Spray-tanning and mastering the at-home manicure. I’ve tried dozens of spray-tanning formulas and have mastered the art of the self-tan (don’t worry, I’ll share!). Plus, I paint on the hottest nail trends every week (currently I’m obsessed with the glitter and dark polish trend). Follow me as I branch out and perfect my DIY skills (up next: waxing!).

Marta Topran: I’m obsessed with making my skin as glowy as possible. That means trying out every anti-aging potion out there and never leaving the house without some sort of shimmery highlighter on my cheekbones. I’m also the resident brow and lash addict. Right now, I’m rocking super long lash extensions that I can’t believe I ever lived without.

Hair Trend Alert: The Deep Sweep

Presenting the first hairstyle trend to emerge in 2013: "The Deep Sweep," as we're calling it around the office.

We've seen this style recently on Kate Bosworth and Kristen Stewart for a while now, but at the 18th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards, Emmy Rossum, Jessica Chastain, and Jaime King all stepped out on the same red carpet wearing it.

And we're not complaining, we absolutely love this look. So much so that we tracked down the hairstylist who did Emmy's 'do, Hallie Bowman, to give us the breakdown on how to recreate it at home.

Take notes, girls, because this style has Saturday night written all over it.

"Deep side-parted wavy hair is a nod to old Hollywood glamour and a reaction to the undone look with some glam on the side," says Bowman.

"To create this look, I started with Emmy's hair wet and applied Davines No. 3 Universal Mattering Mousse for Wizards, $23, drugstore.com, from her roots to her ends because I wanted control with volume. Then, I layered some Morrocan Oil Hair Treatment, $39, amazon.com, over top to keep her hair hydrated." Next, Bowman blew out her hair using a round brush to get it really smooth and coated her strands with Davines Defining Invisible Hairspray, $24, drugstore.com.

"Using a one-inch barrel curling iron, I then curled it all one way, wrapping the one-inch sections of hair underneath the iron first and then overtop," explains Bowman. "Next, I pinned her curls while they cooled and sent her off to makeup."

Finally, Bowman took the pins out and brushed Emmy's hair with a Mason Pearson Brush Nylon and Boar Bristle Brush, $140, nordstrom.com—"the mixed bristles really help the curls conform into glamorous waves and then stay that way all night." She then finished off the look using the Davines No. 11 Universal Grip Glue for Wizards, $20, sleekhair.com, on Emmy's hair, warming it in her palms first and then lightly running it over her waves to keep them in place—followed by some Davines Defining Shine Drops, $30, drugstore.com, which she applied to her hands first and then lightly skimmed over Emmy's strands to give it shine. "Lastly, to keep her hair pushed over to one side, I slid a single bobby pin behind her ear," adds Bowman.

So, now that you have the how-to, are you just dying to try this style this weekend?
