Kegels and jade eggs aren't the only way to tighten your vagina.
Vaginal rejuvenation—or plastic surgery of the vagina to make it tighter and/or younger looking—is becoming a hot topic thanks to celebs like reality star Brandi Glanville and actress Julie Delpy, who have both opened up about surgically tightening their vaginas. Glanville reportedly charged the $10,000 surgery to ex-husband Eddie Cibrian's credit card, while Delpy did it immediately following her son's birth, with the French healthcare program footing the bill.
But what really happens when a doc goes down on you with medical scissors? The term vaginal rejuvenation encompasses down-there plastic surgery procedures including vaginoplasty and labiaplasty.
"Vaginoplasty is a reconstructive procedure and labiaplasty is a cosmetic procedure," explains Dr. Stafford R. Broumand, MD, who performs labiaplasties and is part of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Vaginoplasty is an internal surgery that re-builds the vaginal walls if they've become loose or slack with aging, stretching or childbirth, whereas labiaplasty is an external procedure that is basically a vagina "facelift" to re-shape or downsize the labia (sometimes a package deal with laser hair removal.)
While labiaplasty is more common, vaginoplasty (like the kind Glanville opted for) is the form of vaginal rejvenation that gets tongues wagging: It basically just tightens everything with the goal of "re-virginizing" patients. But it's not without risks.
"The plastic surgery society (American Society of Plastic Surgeons) doesn't condone a cosmetic vaginal reconstruction or vaginoplasty, but that doesn't mean it's not done," explains Dr. Broumand. "There are gynecologists that do it successfully and report on it, but it can have its complications."
According to Dr.Broumand, side effects can be gruesome downstairs. "You can develop non-healing wounds (and) erosion" in your vagina, he explains, adding that vaginoplasty can also damage the connection between the rectum and vagina.
"There has got to be, in my mind, a very significant reason to do a vaginal reconstruction," says Dr. Broumand of the procedure, which normally starts at around $10,000.
Lisa L., 37, underwent vaginoplasty—and would do it again in a second.
The mother of one says after giving birth to her daughter at the age of 34, she suffered muscle damage in the vagina due to the doctor's emergency use of forceps. While no huge health problems occurred, a number of issues did arise: Decreased sensation during sex, increased amount of vaginal flatulence (or, forgive us the term, queefing), and problems using tampons.
"I couldn't be happier with the results," says Lisa, who says so far, she hasn't endured any complications from her surgery eight months ago.
Lisa had to wait six weeks after the surgery to have sex with her husband with her new "teenage vagina."
"It was like having sex for the first time!" she says. "Although I think it was even more painful than I remembered the first time around."
Lisa also said for the first few months she had some numbness, which can be a side affect of vaginoplasty and worried her, but it eventually went away.
"The queefing is under control and I'm using any tampon I want again. My vagina doesn't look like a kid ever came out of it!" Lisa says.
