Are Long Red Nails a Thing? Vanessa Hudgens and Rihanna Think So

Nail art, step aside. Vanessa and Riri have the next tip trend in line: long, candy-apple red nails.

We got an up close and personal look at Vanessa's nails last night at the American Eagle Rock Your Walk event and they're honestly kind of awesome. They're just a bit longer than what you'd normally wear—but not eagle-talon status. Rihanna also stepped out flaunting longer-than-usual red nails (and her new gray mane) earlier this month.

"The first thought that comes to my mind when I see a long, red nail is sexy [um, hello date night!]," says nail guru Jin Soon Choi. "But this look is versatile because if you want to make it more sophisticated and glamorous, all you do is opt for an almond-shaped tip like Vanessa's. And, if you want an edgy, modern twist, copy Rihanna's square-shaped nails. In either case, just be careful not to go too long because then the nail loses its classy feel."

So why the long red-nail resurgence? "We're moving back to basics, which is why Old Hollywood crimson-colored tips are making a comeback. And with fall coming around the corner, you can count on seeing more of the simple, classic looks [like the above] with a hint of a twist, like the incorporation of matte topcoat, different lengths, and longer oval-, square-, squoval-shaped tips."

Well, you heard it here first: lengthier red-hot nails are back and we're all about it.

Do You Like Vanessa Hudgens Hair Long or Short?

Meet the Beauty Bloggers

Carly Cardellino: I'm the beauty and fashion editor here at Cosmopolitan.com. I'll try just about anything once (I have the crop cut—my hair used to be super-long—and body wave to prove it) and then report back. I'm obsessed with hair products, like volumizers and salt sprays, as well as mascara, nail polish, a good foundation (right now I'm using Tom Ford Beauty Traceless Foundation SPF 15), and blush (it literally changes the way you look in seconds)—hopefully you can see why I'm in this business. I also love picking out head-to-toe outfits for friends whether they're going on a date with their guy or a black-tie wedding—so feel free to click on that "contact" link below and send me a question.

Leah Wyar: Ladies, I’m the DIY beauty guru. My specialties? Spray-tanning and mastering the at-home manicure. I’ve tried dozens of spray-tanning formulas and have mastered the art of the self-tan (don’t worry, I’ll share!). Plus, I paint on the hottest nail trends every week (currently I’m obsessed with the glitter and dark polish trend). Follow me as I branch out and perfect my DIY skills (up next: waxing!).

Marta Topran: I’m obsessed with making my skin as glowy as possible. That means trying out every anti-aging potion out there and never leaving the house without some sort of shimmery highlighter on my cheekbones. I’m also the resident brow and lash addict. Right now, I’m rocking super long lash extensions that I can’t believe I ever lived without.

Cosmo chats: Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens has definitely come a long way from her High School Musical days. We chat to the pint-sized star about her turn as a scantily-clad dancer in the action-fantasy thriller, Sucker Punch.

What character do you play?
I play Blondie. She instills the fear in all the characters. Usually, when you do things out of fear, they're generally not the smartest which comes back and bites you in the butt.

What was it like to be in an action film with an all-female cast?
It was amazing and empowering. It’s not very often that you get to see females take control of their destiny; to be a damsel in distress, but also save themselves. Usually, the male is the hero, but this time we're taking control.

Since it’s an action film, are the details important?
It's amazing, the attention that they put into the detail. We would be in the brothel and I would open a drawer, and there would be little lipstick and a little perfume bottle, and on Emily's gun there are charms. There are so many little things that [director] Zack [Snyder] really pays attention to. He makes sure that no rock is unturned and truly explores it to the fullest.

What are the fighting scenes like?

The action blows my mind. Even now, I'm still waiting to wake up from it because it's unlike anything that I've seen before - especially from young females. It's an incredible thing to see these women who are so strong and so powerful. They are warriors in all these different fantasy worlds that you've never seen before, shooting massive guns and shooting creatures. It's a fantasy, so there are no limits.

Was it difficult to work with the green screen?

It's interesting. There were actually a lot of sets involved, probably about 80 per cent sets and then 20 per cent green screen. When you're there and you're present and in that moment, it's very exciting. Your adrenaline starts rushing. Having Zack there with so much energy and support really gets you amped, and you just fall into it.
Things just fall into place after rehearsing and training and preparing for so long.

How did you immerse yourself in these different worlds?
A lot of different aspects really played into putting us into each place. All of this comes from Zack’s mind, so he's an encyclopedia of these worlds. You can go to him with any question you have, and he will go into depth and make sure that you are at your best understanding of what's happening.
Not to mention the wardrobe - our costumes were phenomenal. Each world had a very specific look that was very strong. The first time I put my costume on, I felt like a whole new person. Even the way that I carried myself was different. I held my shoulders back, and I had a new sense of confidence.

What do you want audiences to take away from the film?
I want women to feel empowered and know that if they set their mind to anything, that they can do it.

Sucker Punch is now available on DVD.

Meet the covergirl: Vanessa Hudgens

Loved our interview with Vanessa Hudgens in this month's issue? Here's the rest of it...

Let’s talk about Beastly. The movie is almost like Beauty and the Beast. What do you think is the beauty and the beast of fame in your career?
Oh my goodness, I could go on and on. The good is that people know me from what I’ve been doing and they enjoy it. I love doing what I do, so the thought that they like it is a plus. Oh, and the free stuff! But the downside is fame itself. The paparazzi are such a nuisance. I wish I didn’t let it bother me as much, but sometimes I feel defeated when they get a picture of me. That’s definitely the downside.

How was the kissing scene with your co-star Alex Pettyfer?
It was good. It was really interesting because of the makeup with the mask and the prosthetics. When you strip a person their looks, it’s like they change. Their whole demeanour is different. The way they carry themselves is different.

Do you think men are feeling the same pressure now to look good?
I think women get the pressure more because when men age, it’s sexy. They get have their gray hair. When women age, its perceived in Hollywood that they need a lift and they need a tuck, and yadda yadda. So I think the pressure is on women. But at the same time, it depends on who you are. I know some guys that are more vain than some girls.

Do you miss working with the High School Musical cast?
Yeah, it was a lot of fun. I miss the whole cast. When I think of that movie, it literally is the epitome of my childhood. As soon as I finished, I feel like I graduated and became an adult. I miss it so much. In the first movie, we were all just kids running around singing and dancing and having the time of our lives. Now, we’re all grown up and have responsibilities. I think we’re going to try to have a reunion really soon.

Would you ever have any work done?
I don’t know. It would really depend. I’m already starting to use anti-aging. You might as well start sooner than later because products are really amazing these days. That’s another good beauty tip.

Growing up in front of the cameras, has it been hard?
Yes, of course. I set foot in front of the camera when I was, like, 12  –  I did my first movie. It’s weird, but at the same time, I kind of love it because I’m the worst at taking pictures. I never take pictures, so now I can be, like, “Oh, I was 13 in this movie. I was 14 in this movie.” It’s my very own video album.
