The New Celebrity Religious Fad Is, Uhh, a Satanist Sex Cult

Socialite and it-girl Peaches Geldof recently revealed on her Twitter that she’s a disciple of Ordo Templi Orients (OTO), a secret sex cult founded by Aleister Crowley, a turn-of-the-century English occultist who called himself “the beast, 666.” Geldof has a tattoo of the acronym inside a heart inked on her arm.

I have to admit, I’ve now heard enough bullsh*t about Xenu and aliens and Kabbalah beads to last a lifetime. Celebrities would worship tuna melts or Grover from Sesame Street as long as it was expensive, exclusive and obscure enough for them to seem super-informed.

But just when Scientology seemed the peak of the celebrity-endorsed religious craze, now we’re introduced to OTO, an even more bizarre sex-based religion favored by the rich and famous, according to The Daily Mail. It’s kind of… well, it’s, uh, Satanism. John Travolta and his hairplugs aren't looking so weird now, huh? (Oh, he still does? Okay, yeahhh, I agree.)

Among the other celebrities taken in by Crowley’s snake-oil are Led Zeppelin band member Jimmy Page and, supposedly, Jay-Z; Hova’s Rocawear line apparently contains a number of OTO symbols, and he’s consistently been rumored to have an involvement with the Illuminati.

One historical hallmark of OTO was are "sadomasochistic sex rituals," "the use of hard drugs, including opium, cocaine, heroin and mescaline and "raising malevolent gods" (a.k.a. BeyoncĂ© after she finds out that Jay-Z’s been doing mescaline and having sadomasochistic sex with Peaches Geldof and Jimmy Page).

However, we should take all of this with a grain of salt. Peaches Geldof, in particular, is the kind of religious dilettante one sees a lot of in Hollywood (Scientology one week, Judaism the next week, etc.), so she might not even know anything about OTO other than she thinks the symbols are cool. When one Twitter follower asked her how to get involved with the belief system, she shared a list of Crowley's books and called them "super interesting."

Just be careful, guys. I mean, haven't you ever seen The Craft?
