Random Sex Is Okay At a Party, But Not On a First Date (Huh?)

While hooking up in college doesn't happen as much as most people think, clearly, it does happen. But what's considered acceptable when it comes to sex might surprise you.

In a new study of nearly 300 college students, many said that it's totally fine and normal to have sex at a party (among the Solo cups and beer sludge) but not on a first date—even if the couple in question had previously had sex.

Sorry but, um, we're a little confused.

According to the survey results, part of the reason why a random hookup at a frat house would be totally kosher but getting busy on a first date–with a guy whose last name you actually know—is not? Alcohol. Forty percent of respondents said that booze would be flowing in a party sitch but not so much on a first date—meaning, we assume, that you can use insobriety as an excuse for the party boning, thus making it easier to explain.

"Our findings suggest that different behavior by the exact same people is really based on the context or the situation...not necessarily just the person, who they are, their values or their desires," said study researcher Gretchen Webber of Middle Tennessee State University. "It really shows the dominance of the setting for directing people’s behavior."

Not surprisingly, some of the survey-takers said that first date sex would reflect poorly on those having it—particularly on women. Overall, the results seem to suggest that being on a date requires people to adopt more conservative behavior—especially us ladies—in order to not tarnish our good names. Which totally harks of outdated, old-timey (and, dare we say, sexist?) dating standards.

It's pretty crazy-slash-sad that in 2013, it's considered acceptable to have loveless, meaningless sex that you can blame on being drunk, but getting busy with someone you might actually like, when you have all of wits about you, is cause for major judgment. Something just isn't right about that…

Random Foods That Make You Bloat

You already know it’s a good idea to stay away from salty potato chips when you want to avoid belly bloat. But a new report found that other seemingly innocent foods are tripping you up.

According to the Center For Disease Control’s list of the top 10 sources of sodium, most of us get too much sodium from…bread and rolls. It’s not that they contain more salt than potato chips and junk food—we just eat them more because, until now, we didn’t realize they had so much sodium in them.

According to the report, these top 10 items make up 44 percent of the sodium we eat every day. Here’s the rest of the list:

1. Bread
2. Cold cuts and cured meats
3. Pizza
4. Poultry
5. Soups
6. Fast-food hamburgers and sandwiches
7. Cheese
8. Spaghetti and other pasta dishes
9. Meatloaf and other meat dishes
10. Snacks—potato chips, pretzels, etc.

So, if you're planning to slip into a skintight LBD on Saturday, take a pass on having a pizza night or a burger a few days beforehand. Instead, try a protein-packed salad or a piece of grilled fish.

The Random Way Guys Know We're On Our Period

There’s no question that getting your period sucks. For five to seven days, you feel crampy, moody, bloated, and all-around less attractive than your usual sexy self—not exactly something we want to advertise. So we weren’t really thrilled to read a new study that found some guys are totally aware when Flo is in town…just by listening to our voices.

For the study, researchers from Adams State College and SUNY Albany recorded women counting from one to five at different times during their menstrual cycle—when they were ovulating, at various times when they were less fertile, and when they had their period—and played the recordings for three different groups of men.

The first group was asked to listen to four recordings and guess which one was made while the women had their period. Statistically speaking, they should have gotten it right 25 percent of the time, but they guessed correctly 35 percent of the time.

The second group listened to the recordings with the exception of the one made during ovulation (it was replaced with a duplicate from a day when the woman was less fertile). The men correctly guessed the period recording 34 percent of the time.

The last group wasn’t clued in that the study had anything to do with a woman’s period. Instead, they were asked to choose which recording sounded the most unattractive. And, oh yeah, they choose the period voice 34 percent of the time.

Way to kick us when we’re down, boys.
