Drew Barrymore: "I've Gotta Get Out of My Sweatpants"

When you're an actress, producer, director, and a wife; a new mom to baby Olive with another girl on the way; and the CEO of your own beauty brand, sometimes all you want to do is skip makeup and stay in sweats. Drew Barrymore sat down with Cosmopolitan.com to discuss her latest Flower launches and what makes her feel sexy — even when she's totally dressed down.

Do you see yourself as sexy?

No, I don't. [Laughs] I've gotta get out of my sweatpants... I mean, my husband is so sweet about it, and I'm pregnant. I think I need some lingerie or something sexy! Would that help? That's so cliché. [Laughs] I'm wearing the most utilitarian bra right now, it's so hideous, but it's supportive. [Laughs] No, I actually feel the sexiest when I make my husband laugh, because when he laughs really hard; he has this Prince Charles laugh and he doesn't look like he would laugh like that at all. But sometimes I'll do [silly] dances for him and he laughs really hard, and that's when I feel good about myself and sexy.

Speaking of being pregnant, you already have a baby girl and another on the way. How do you plan on defining beauty to them both?

Ugh, I will literally kill myself to rake them through the lessons I've learned about how insecurity is not an option. It just isn't. When I was a late teenager, I had a boyfriend who cheated on me and I remember feeling so bad about myself — I felt shame. And I remember blaming myself, like why am I not enough? She must be so great and I'm just not enough. And then I thought, what if I decided to never think this way again? And what if I decided that I am what I am and for someone that will be enough for them? I don't want to have to morph myself into this phantom standard, so instead of being jealous and suspicious that every guy would do that same thing to me, I decided that nope, who I am will be enough for someone someday! It was a real script flip and it changed the rest of my life in such a positive way.

What a bastard though, right? But he did me the biggest favor. And he knows who he is.

Are you excited that you're having another girl, especially now that you own a beauty company?

With my luck, they'll want to be veternarians or racecar drivers and I'll support them with whatever they want to be. But you can't hand down a film to someone, so I'm hoping that this company is a multi-generational one that continues to be for women, about women.

How has your beauty routine changed since you've been pregnant?

I've never had dark circles like this in my life. I've always had purple under my eyes, but between having a toddler and being pregnant, I tell my husband that I look like I got punched… under both eyes! I also have these wonderful pregnancy melanoma patches that are on the side of my mouth that looks like I got into pudding or something. So, I use my Flower Skincognito Stick Foundation to conceal everything.

This also isn't all pregnancy glow, sure I'm glowing and I'm happy, but it's really my new highlighter chubby sticks that you see. [Laughs]

I'm also so tired in life now that I hit the pillow and sleep. I've always been that insomniac that felt like sleep was never going to happen, but now I hit the bed and I'm out. But when I'm 60 it's going to be like Stella Got Her Groove Back. The kids will be out of the house, they'll be 18, and I'll dance around and have some wine.

Any crazy pregnancy cravings?

I mean, other than everything? [Laughs] I'm really into pan-friend noodles, they're so good. They're crispy and then they get soft. And that sauce! I don't know what it is, but it's a weird gelatinous consistency, and then you swell up. It's wonderful, you feel like a puffer fish.

You Gotta See Justin Bieber's Birthday Cake

Justin Bieber is 20 years old today and he celebrated with eating the same cheesecake my aunt had at her 65th birthday dinner at the Olive Garden. Birthdays are the best!

Do you think that because he's no longer a teen dream he'll start acting like more of an adult? LOL jk dumb question.

A Guy On Girls: When You Gotta Go....

Well, it seems my constant complaining about Jessa being mean and irredeemable finally caught the attention of Lena Dunham, who abruptly wrote her out of the show in a tragic trout fishing accident. Wait, is that what happened? I saw that it was setting up to be a Jessa-heavy episode and left my apartment to get a sandwich.

Okay, so maybe there was no accident. Maybe we finally got a nuanced look at what made Jessa Jessa—specifically, a wildly unreliable father—and maybe we now understand why she’s such a complicated mess herself. And maybe we were just starting to appreciate her as a character when we read her "See you around, my love" goodbye note. Tell me I’m not the only one who stayed up all night listening to "Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone)" by ‘80s hair band Cinderella. (Seriously, somebody please tell me; I’m very concerned that I just did that.)

I do think Dunham could have found a better way to write Jemima Kirke’s character out—or, better yet, a way to keep her around while minimizing the role. How about this: At the Manitou train station, Jessa falls onto the tracks, narrowly escaping death, and ends up in a coma. Hannah cares for her dutifully, all the while bringing Jessa’s dysfunctional family closer together. Ultimately, Hannah and Frank, Jessa’s creepy turtleneck-and-jorts-wearing stepbrother, fall in love. I have to think this scenario occurred to Dunham, but since it’s essentially the exact plot of Sandra Bullock’s While You Were Sleeping, there were likely some intellectual property issues.

Speaking of issues… Hannah has a urinary tract nightmare on her hands, and when that girl is experiencing pee-pee problems, we’re all experiencing pee-pee problems. I’ll be honest: Men don’t understand UTIs. SI would guess that even approximately 35 percent of male doctors are only slightly fuzzy on the details. (If your gyno is a dude, ask him if Jessa’s garlic remedy really works. He’ll say, "Um, yeah, see the thing about that is…um…uhhh," then he’ll fake a heart attack or a phone call or both.) All we know is it’s probably our fault, it hurts you really badly, and when you have one we aren’t allowed to drink the cranberry juice in the fridge.

There’s always something funny and disorienting about Girls episodes set outside of New York City—like that feeling you got when you saw your middle school math teacher at the mall over summer breakt—but it’s nice to see Hannah and Jessa seeking small-town thrills. Hannah freaks out when the group is doing whippits and driving recklessly, which makes her seem like a buzzkill, but I know where she’s coming from. In high school, I wouldn’t even get in a car with someone who had been drinking, because I knew there would be a tragic accident, and a fire-and-brimstone minister would outlaw rock music and dancing of any kind in my town, and I just couldn’t have that on my conscience.

And in the end, Hannah’s glimpse into Jessa’s home life reminds her that her own upbringing was much rosier, but unfortunately her mother doesn’t know how to interpret her call to say "thanks" as anything other than an act of manipulation. No good deed goes unpunished, and no bout of cystitis goes without dagger-y urination pains. I almost know how she feels.
