Halloween How-To: Turning Long Hair Into a Flapper Bob

If you're NOT going as a sexy [insert any Halloween costume here], you might want to try a Gatsby-esque flapper girl costume. In order to pull it off successfully, you'll need the iconic Daisy Buchanon 'do.

Hairstylist Matt Fugate shows us how it's done.

1. Part your hair in line with the arch in your left eyebrow. "Use a fine-toothed comb, so that it's perfectly straight," suggests Fugate.

2. Divide and conquer. "Separate your hair into three sections: the front, the crown, which you can pin up into a bun and clip" — like our model and Cosmo's associate beauty editor Loni Albert did above — "and the bottom, which you'll need to put into two pig tails," he explains.

3. Begin to barrel curl the front. "Taking inch-wide sections around your hairline, start to wrap your hair over the iron and around and around the barrel to make them all look uniform," says Fugate. "This will allow your hair to fall into that fingerwave formation easier. Then, pin each curl so that it set as it cools to make the curls last longer."

4. Tease your hair with your hands. "Working on one pigtail at a time, hold it with one hand and start pushing your hair toward your scalp, teasing it into a cotton candy-like texture with the other," he says. "You're creating volume for the crown section of your hair to be layered over, giving your future faux bob a solid foundation."

5. Combine your "cotton candy" pigtails. "Gather your "cotton candy" teased hair together and secure it with bobby pins," says Fugate. "This allows you to create volume at the nape of your neck, establishing the start of your faux bob."

6. Let your hair down. "Gently brush out all of your curls using a boar bristle brush, stopping when you get the desired fingerwave that frames your face perfectly," he says. "Ideally you want the wave to follow your bone structure, opening your eye and slimming the cheekbones. To get this effect, place a clip in the groove in line with your right eyebrow and another below your cheekbone." Then, brush out the crown section and lay it over the teased section at the nape of your neck, using bobby pins to secure it into the elastics (which helps it stay better)," Fugate notes.

7. Pin up any loose hanging tendrils. "Gather and pin the hair from the front section, tucking it up under itself and bobby pinning it to give you that faux bob look all the way around," he adds. "Then, use some hairspray to keep everything in place.

8. Finish by putting on a sparkly headband!

Halloween How-To: Sexy '20s Flapper Girl Makeup

Going as a flapper this Halloween? First, pinned my recent 1920s faux bob how-to. Second, to really transform yourself from pretty to totally hot Gatsby girl, pin this makeup tutorial.

Makeup artist Lauren Cosenza shows us how it's done.

1. Lacquer up. "With your foundation already applied and a wash of light pink blush swept over your cheekbones, use a lip brush to precisely coat your lips with a highly-pigmented red lipstick, emphasizing the cupid’s bow for a retro finish," says Cosenza. Model and Cosmo's associate beauty editor Loni Albert used Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids in On Fire Red.

2. Outline your upper eyelid. "Trace your upper lashline and up and over the crease of your eyelid in a half-circle shape, using a creamy eye pencil, like NYX Slide On Eye Liner Pencil in Brown Perfection," Cosenza adds. "Buff the line with a smudger brush to then soften the edges and slightly pull the color towards the center of your eye."

3. Fill in your eyelids. "Apply a matte brown-ish black shadow onto the center of your lid as the base of your eye color," says Cosenza. Loni blended MAC Carbon with MAC Brun.

4. Trace your lower lash line with brown liner. This adds depth to your eyes. Loni used the same NYX Slide On Eye Liner Pencil in Brown Perfection liner that she used to outline her upper eyelid.

5. Line your tightline and waterline with black. "Apply a black eye liner to the inner upper and lower tearlines for added drama," she says. Here, Loni went for L’Oreal Extra Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner in Black.

6. Make your eyes pop. "Highlight and brighten the inner corners of your eyes with a gold eye pencil, creating a "V" shape," says Cosenza. Loni used L’Oreal HIP Chrome Eyeliner in Gold Charge to create this glam effect.

7. Add some sparkle into the mix. "Pat glittery gold and bronze pigments onto the center of your eye to draw attention to them and instantly make them standout," she adds. Loni mixed and applied Maybelline Color Tattoo Pure Pigments in Wild Gold and in Breaking Bronze.

8. Apply mascara. "Make sure to coat your lashes with mascara" — like L'OrĂ©al Paris Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara in Black Brown — "so that your lashes are visible against the gleam of the glitter you just imparted on your eyelids," notes Cosenza.

9. Add some beads and bat your lashes, showing off those gorgeous eyes.

10. Hit the town!
