Not sure what trends to back at the racetrack this Spring Carnival? Who better to ask than this year's faces of the races: model, designer and TV personality Nikki Phillips and Underbelly star Firass Dirani. Nikki and Firass give their tips on everything from fashion to horses... and even on how to nab a pretty filly or handsome stallion.

What are the top fashion trends in racing this year?
Colour blocking. I love it and think it is so much fun for Sydney Spring Carnival. Play on bright and bold colours, think hot pinks, bright red and tangerine. For those who like it even louder, mix it up with mega-prints.
If you don't want to go out and buy a specific 'races' outfit, what's a good failsafe option?
The LWD (The Little White Dress). Everyone has one and they are fantastic for Sydney Spring Carnival. Pair it back with a simple white hat. If you focus on a sophisticated, polished and clean cut outfit, you can’t get it wrong.
Fascinators vs hats – which one do you prefer?
For me, I love a sculptured cocktail hat in a bold spring colour.
Anything that’s unforgivable if worn on the paddock?
White leather shoes are not great on any male racegoer!
How do you pick a horse?
A stand out name is always hard to resist not backing however I usually try and support trainers or breeding background that I am familiar with.
Who are you betting on this year?
I’m looking forward to supporting the Queen of the Track, Gai Waterhouse.
What are your five do’s and don’t’s for a day at the races?
Do:
1. Stay hydrated – lots of water.
2. Wear comfortable shoes.
3. Pack lip-gloss in your purse and any other minor make up touch ups you may need to work out on throughout the day.
4. Have fun with accessories and pay attention to detail – the hat, the bag the shoes.
5. Try and back a winner.
Don’t:
1. Wear shoes you are not comfortable in.
2. If the temperature is cool on a race day, don’t be afraid to layer with a summer trench.
3. Remember it’s the races, not a nightclub – keep plunging necklines and ultra-minis for another occasion.
4. Racing is a sport which is entrenched with tradition however don’t be afraid to have fun with the fashion rules.
5. For the boys, don’t forget to polish your shoes!

Any advice for picking a winner?
I love looking at the horses in the flesh and deciding on the day if they look ready to race.
What are your recommendations for a good day out at the races with the guys?
Get organised a couple of days before hand. Have your suit ready and be across who’s racing that day. With a little bit of planning you’re bound to have fun, look great and maybe walk away with a couple of wins if you’re lucky.
What's your fashion tip for guys this year?
Have fun with your outfit! Sydney Spring Carnival is all about a grey suit paired back with a bold colour tie and pocket handkerchief. Don’t forget sunglasses – classic and elegant shapes are key for the racetrack.
In terms of girls at the races, what's the full trifecta for you?
I think someone looks great when they’re comfortable and having fun. If you’re not going to last the day in your shoes, don’t wear them!
