After appearing to the melodies of Alicia Keys's "Girl on Fire," Texas state senator Wendy Davis officially announced she's running for governor of Texas in 2014.
"Our future is brighest when it's lit by everyone's stars. That's why today I am proud to announce my candidacy to be the 48th governor of this great state," Davis said. "It's time for a governor who believes that the future of Texas belongs to all of us."
On the same stage where Davis graduated from high school in Halstom, Texas, 32 years ago, she stressed her record on education, but didn't mention her epic pro-choice filibuster. Instead she shared her story of living in a trailer at age 19 as a young mom on the verge of divorce.
"It wasn't uncommon for me to find that my phone had been turned off or my power had been disconnected," she said.
Today, she noted, her future is much brighter. Staring at a cheering crowd, she added, "It's all of you."
