Breaking: Celebs Obsessed With My Little Pony Hair

Soon after singer Demi Lovato dyed her hair hot pink (and even more recently shaved the side of her head), Nicole Richie debuted a lilac dye job on Instagram. While Demi has always been a hair chameleon, Nicole has stuck with various shades of blonde for pretty much eternity — suggesting that the My Little Pony look is officially A Thing.

Little Boots Dishes on Her New Album <i>Nocturnes</i>

March 29, 2013 at 1:55PM By Erika Berlin |

British electro-pop star Victoria Hesketh (you know her as Little Boots) stopped by Cosmo this week to talk about her stellar new album, Nocturnes—due May 7—which will have you dancing up a storm (and maybe wearing more glitter than usual). To say this album is insanely infectious is an understatement: Check out her ethereal, trance-like first single Motorway and latest release, the perfectly crafted disco-dance jam Broken Record.

Little Boots talked with us about making a record on her own terms, the return of disco, and why she wants to be like Robyn (don’t we all).

Cosmo: Is it May yet? We can’t wait to hear this album live!

Little Boots: It comes out two days after my birthday! I’ll be in the U.S. on tour that week, so I’ll just make it my birthday/tour/album week. Celebrate everything in one week! We’ll be doing six cities in seven days—and hitting both coasts—so it’s going to be killer. It would be cool to do something for all ages as well—I always get loads of messages from fans under 18 who all say they really want to come to a show, but there’s the under-21 laws here! And I think God, that was the main age I went to gigs, when I was 18 and 19. So we’ll see what we can do. I’m just so psyched to get out on tour with the new songs. I know I’m going to live on adrenaline the whole week. You don’t even need to feed me! I’ll just be high on adrenaline all week!

Cosmo: Your music lives really well between the dance and the indie worlds—was there a particular sound you were going for when recording this album?

Little Boots: I’ve always had one foot in pop and one foot in the kind of alternative dance world. I really wanted to make sure this album was sonically cohesive. I wanted to record it all in the same room with the people, the same synthesizers. I’ve been out DJ-ing since the last tour—just being in dark, dirty places at three in the morning—and listening to a lot of old disco and house and reading up on the history of dance music. You can definitely hear those influences here and how it led me to work with Tim Goldsworthy from DFA Records and Andy Butler from Hercules and Love Affair.

Cosmo: We thought we heard a disco-revival in the works on here.

Little Boots: It feels like maybe this year could be the year of disco—Daft Punk is coming back and working with Nile Rodgers and Giorgio Moroder, the two kings of disco. Dance Pop is just huge and feels so derivative and unimaginative to me, and I know that space could be amazing and creative and pushing boundaries. I’m hoping that with Daft Punk coming back and working with the people they are, they will give dance a bit of a kick in the ass—save it from eating itself any further. There are some amazing pop songs out there, but for every great one there are five terrible ones. It’s a vicious cycle.

Cosmo: You co-write all of your songs, and you’ve set up your own label, On Repeat, to release this album. How was that process?

Little Boots: It took a bit of balls, really. I wasn’t seeing eye to eye with my other label and it was so frustrating, so the past three years have been this journey of setting up my own label and making this record that I really wanted to make. It’s been self-empowering—now I’m totally in control of my career and where it’s going. Even though it’s a lot more work on a personal level, it’s super exciting. It means I can be like, "I have an idea for a video! Let’s make it!" or "I want to work with this producer! Let’s do it!" or "I want to make a dress that lights up for my tour! Let’s do it!" It feels like I’m in the driver’s seat. It took some time to learn to trust myself and get that self-confidence, but I look at people like Robyn who really took control, and she’s such an incredible, inspiring woman and artist. She set up this badass label and made all these amazing records, and I thought shit, if she can do it so can I! I’m hoping I can follow in her footsteps. So, thanks, Robyn!

Scott Disick Could Be To Blame For Kourtney's (Little Bit Of) Leftover Baby Weight

Scott Disick's cruelty could be the reason Kourtney Kardashian's jeans are tight.

Confused?

The (sometimes lovably) pompous reality star caused an outrage among Kardashian fans on a recent episode of "Kourtney and Kim Take Miami" when Disick chastised his two-time baby mama, Kourtney, for not dropping the baby weight quick enough.

"Just do it faster!" Disick sneers at Kourtney, who just gave birth to their second child, Penelope, eight months ago. "You're my piece of machinery." Kardashian, who shows off her shape in a one-piece, eventually bursts into tears.

But Disick's bitchin' could be adding extra stress to Kourt's already hectic life, making it more difficult for her to shed the pounds post childbirth this time around, which she herself points out on the show.

"The weight new moms are looking to lose often has nothing to do with the baby but often is due to stress hormones and contributes to belly fat," says Latham Thomas, a maternity lifestyle expert who is a favorite of celebrities like Alicia Keys. (Thomas is also the author of Mama Glow: A Hip Guide to Your Fabulous Abundant Pregnancy.)

"For Kourtney and most celebrities who are having very public pregnancies, there is such a larger umbrella that contributes to their stress. It's compounded in the media and it effects not just their self-esteem but the stress hormones that circulate through their blood streams," Thomas continues.

Besides stress, Thomas says Kourtney is completely right: The first baby is always easier to lose weight after.

And there are other facts Kardashian — and Disick, for that matter — should take into consideration.

"Age is one thing. Women who are having babies mid-to-late twenties will experience more effective weight loss then those having babies thirty-five and up, and the reason is because of our biological pre-disposition to prepare our bodies to jump back," explains Thomas. Kardashian is 33 years-old, and was 30 when she gave birth to her first child, Mason, with Disick.

Trainers, nutritionists, personal assistants: Shouldn't celebrities be able to bounce back quicker than the average woman?

"By a year, a mom should be back to her pre-baby body and should have lost even more than before the baby was born," says Thomas about all women, who adds that breast-feeding is a major key to weight-loss after childbirth. "By month six I am finding most of the women I work with are back to that weight."

One thing's for sure: Disick should be watching his mouth if he wants to see his baby mama in a "flossy" little bikini again, as he snidely spouted on the show.

"The children's father shouldn't be putting a lot of pressure on her, because her body has to do a lot. There's a lot of stress, which contributes to her not being able to drop that last little bit," Thomas concludes.

Are you listening, Scott?

Sweet Little Lies

Justin was still too sick to go to practice on Tuesday. After our speed workout (an hour of sprinting up the steepest hill in Central Park, which, barf) Nina and I decided we deserved some pizza and a big gulp of wine. As we collected our things, I looked at my phone and saw that I had a missed call from a number I didn’t recognize.

“What is 202?” I asked Nina, showing her my phone.

“DC, right?”

“Who do I know in DC?” I mumbled to myself.

“Well, maybe if you cleared out your voicemails the person could have left you one and the mystery would be solved.” Nina leveled A Look at me. Nina has beef with the fact that I refuse to clear out my inbox. I am single-handedly trying to phase out the voicemail. I fly into a rage when I listen to a message that says, “It’s so and so. Call me back.” I see your missed call! Why would you do that to me?

Though, for instances such as this one (and doctors appointments, and dentist appointments, and calls from creditors when I forget to pay my Bloomingdales card on time) I suppose she has a point.

“Call it back,” Nina said. “But not now. I’m going to get pneumonia if I stand out here drenched in sweat any longer.” The weather in New York has been bi-polar lately, and it’s back to being so cold that not even the warmest gloves can keep your fingers from going numb.

We hoisted our bags onto our shoulders and walked out of the park, quickly. Nina told me about her date with Jeremy, the guy she met at Taco Wednesday dinner last week, and how he paid for their date with a Groupon.

“Am I a horrible person for being completely turned off by that?”

“Um, no,” I said. “I would be weirded out too. But I don’t think it’s a dealbreaker.”

“Well this is the worst dry streak I’ve ever had, so my standards are lower than usual anyway. And it could be much worse than paying for a date with a Groupon, I guess.”

We were out of the park now, and approaching our favorite NY pizza chain.

“Have you talked to Rick?” Nina asked.

I’ve been texting Rick ever since last weekend. I made him promise to keep me posted about Justin. It feels weird, going behind Justin’s back like this, but I don’t know what else I’m supposed to do.

“Yeah. Justin had a second round of scans today. But it takes a few days to get the results.”

Nina held the door to the restaurant open for me. “I’m sure they’ll come back in his favor.”

“Thanks,” I said. Then, to the hostess, “Two please.”

The waiter had just uncorked (fine, unscrewed) the cheapest bottle of wine on their menu when I felt my phone vibrate inside my purse. I pulled it out. It was that 202 number again. I pointed at the number to Nina, who nodded.

“Hello?” I said.

“Josie?” It was a woman’s voice.

“Yes? Who is this?”

“It’s Sally. Justin’s mom.”

Justin’s mom, I mouthed to Nina. Her eyes widened.

“Ohmigosh, hi, Sally. How are you?”

“I’m good. I’m sorry to bother you, hon. But well,” she cleared her throat. “I’m worried about Justin. Is he okay?”

My tongue felt like it was tied in a knot. Somehow I managed to sputter a response. “Of course he is! Why?”

“Okay,” Sally said. “It’s just that his doctor called us. Something about his follow up scans. I think he meant to call Justin’s cell phone but he dialed our number instead. I’ve tried calling Justin, and he won’t answer.”

“I’m sure he’s just sleeping,” I said. “The flu kind of knocked him out.”

“He has the flu?”

Shit. “Um, yeah. Along with everyone else in New York, apparently!” I laughed, trying to keep it light.

“Josie,” Sally’s voice sounded wobbly. “Please have him call us. Tell him we’re worried.”

“I will,” I said. “But please don’t worry. Everything’s okay.”

We said goodbye and hung up the phone.

“What,” Nina said, “the hell was that?”

“That’s exactly where I’m going. Hell. For lying to that sweet woman.” I buried my head in my hands.

“How does she even have your number?”

“I gave it to her at Becca’s engagement party. She asked for it.”

“Well, what did she want to know?” Nina pressed.

“I guess Justin’s doctor called them by mistake, and left a message about his follow up appointment on their machine. Now his mom is understandably freaking out and she can’t get a hold of him.”

“Well, at least this can all come out in the open then.” Nina sat back and took a sip of her wine.

“What do you mean?”

“His doctor let the cat out the bag to his parents, and now his mom let the cat out of the bag to you. You don’t even have to let on that you read that letter or that Rick said anything to you. You found out organically.”

“I guess.” I shredded a piece of bread, nervously. “I just…I feel like it’s none of my business.”

“But Josie. It would be so much weirder to not tell him his mom called you!”

“I know.”

“Just tell him you got a call from his mom and she’s worried about him because his doctor called her. And then if he wants to elaborate, he can.”

“Obviously I’m going to do that. I just hate feeling like I’m putting him on the spot to tell me something he clearly doesn’t want to tell me.”

Nina shrugged. “I don’t see another way around it.”

I didn’t either, so I resolved to call Justin after dinner and let him know what had happened. And to call his damn mother! Poor thing. I’m hoping he opens up to me and lets me in on what’s going on. I hate feeling like such a shade-ball.

<i>Pretty Little Liars</i>' Troian Bellisario Chats

Troian Bellisario Troian Bellisario pops by the Cosmo office.

Q. At the end of last season—right after Spencer lost her virginity to Toby—we find out he might be working with A. What the hell?

A: I know! Spencer’s pretty smart, so she’s not going to stay in the dark for long. As the season goes on, Spencer’s in territory she’s never been in before. She’s spinning out of control.

Q. One thing we love about Pretty Little Liars is that it’s not afraid to be dark. Any theories on where the show will go?

A: With our show, all bets are off. We have this fantastic director, Norman Buckley, and one of our running jokes it that in the finale of all finales, you find out that everything is entirely in Spencer’s head. She’s locked up in Radley and none of these people are her friends—they’re all doctors and Spencer is just in a corner unraveling. So many people have different theories. There are some people who think Spencer killed Alison and that I’m setting everybody up for A, and that Toby’s one of my minions.

Q. What about all these rumors of a movie?

A: I don’t know. I feel like that’s what always happens with a wonderful show. It’s a great rumor. And for all of us, it would be so much fun to do a fourth season and then sum everything up in an epic movie. But I have heard that about so many shows. Like if somebody had told me that Six Feet Under—my favorite show ever—was doing a movie, I’d probably cry.

Q. A few issues ago in Cosmo, we quoted your BF Patrick Adams saying that he auditioned for a guest role on Pretty Little Liars because he was trying to win you back.

A: [laughs] Yeah, it was pretty awesome. Not at the time because he was so sneaky! We met doing theater before that, and then I went away to shoot Pretty Little Liars and I started to feel like he wasn’t giving me everything I felt like he could be. So I was like, I’m going to bounce. And then the next day he said, ‘I just want to let you know, I have an audition for your show.’ Once he got the role, the moment I saw him, I was just like, ‘This is stupid face! Fine!’ And we’ve been together ever since.

Q. I love that you weren’t afraid to tell him that you wanted more from him.

A: I learned from that. When you’ve been with somebody for a long time, you have to constantly ask each other, ‘Are you here? Cause I’m here.’ Or ‘You haven’t been here lately—do you still want to be here?’ It could lead to a break up, but that might be for the best. It could also lead to an infusion of new love in your relationship, and bring you to a new level of trust with each other. I think those are the most difficult conversations to have, and I don’t like having them, but they’re completely necessary.

Q. Patrick’s show Suits shoots in Toronto, and Pretty Little Liars films in LA. So you must be living on a plane.

A: Living on a plane. I call myself the foldable girl because I’ve gotten so used to sleeping [on a seat]. That’s why I’m into yoga. Most people would say it’s for flexibility, for health. It’s just so I can be a collapsible person.

Q. The show has turned you and your castmates—Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale, and Shay Mitchell—into stars. Is there any competition between you for other roles?

A: One of the best parts about Pretty Little Liars is that the four of us are so different. We have completely different trajectories, so we’re not in competition with each other. Shay is going to have her own perfume, her own clothing line—she’s going to sell you a million different things that you really want and then she’s going to give all of that money to charity and become the next Bond girl. Lucy is going to be like Reese Witherspoon, that girl you root for in moves and who your heart goes out to. And Ashley kills it at everything. She’s got Spring Breakers coming out. She’s just an incredible actress and she’s got such depth to her. And then for me, I know the kind of movies I am interested in doing and even writing for myself, and the kind of theater I really want to do. One of the coolest things on a set with four girls who are all around the same age is that I’ve had moments where Lucy has come up to me and said, ‘Have you read this script? Because they sent it to me, but you would be so much better for this role.’

Q. That’s amazing because there’s such a stereotype that female friendships are catty.

A: Yeah. We get catty in the way that sisters are catty. Like, ‘Shut up, I’m gonna scratch your eyes out…I love you.’ One of my favorite scenes from the last season was when Lucy and I go to a party to drop off my Penn State application. She’s helping me pick out clothes and at the end of the scene we’re just giggling on a bed. We never got through the end of that scene because we were just laughing so hard we were crying.

Q. This is a great moment for women on television—Pretty Little Liars, The Mindy Project, Girls…

A: A lot of our guest stars say that our set has so much energy. I think on the set of many shows, there’s a male lead who has this egotistical sense of, ‘I run this, this is my show, welcome to my set.’ When people come on our set, it’s just four of us goofing around and stuffing our faces, like we’re at sleepaway camp. I don’t know how people do TV shows where they don’t actually talk to each other outside of the scene—we’re like family.

Tune in to the Pretty Little Liars' Halloween special Oct. 23 at 8:00 pm EST on ABC Family.
