How to Apply Highlighter Flawlessly

If you want that lit-from-within-glow that has people telling you your skin looks amazing, follow these steps mapped out by makeup artist Lauren Cosenza.

1. A concealer that's one shade lighter than your skin tone
2. Blending sponge
3. Blending eye makeup brush
4. Liquid highlighter
5. Cream or powder highlighter
6. Lipstick with gold tones

1. Map out your approach. After creating a flawless canvas with your foundation, map out the areas you want to highlight using dots of concealer one shade lighter than your skin tone. Apply dots horizontally over the center of your forehead, down and around your nose, under your eyes, and in an arch over your chin. Model and interior designer Lindsay Marcella used Bye Bye Under Eye in Light by It Cosmetics. By applying the concealer in dots, it allows you put on just enough so it doesn't appear caked on when you diffuse it.

2. Blend the dots with a damp makeup sponge. Wet a large hourglass-shaped makeup sponge with water and squeeze out any excess liquid. Using the wider side for the flat planes of your face (your cheeks, forehead, and chin) and the pointy side for the smaller features of your face (around your lashline, mouth, and nose), diffuse the concealer from the center of your face out toward the perimeter of your face. Lindsay used UBU Blender Baby Foundation Sponge here.

3. Make your best features pop. Using a soft, fluffy eye shadow brush (Lindsay used MAC Cosmetics 224 brush), apply a liquid highlighter down the bridge of your nose, on your cheekbones, over the inner corners of your eyes, onto your brow bone, on top of your cupid's bow (the indent at the center of your top lip), and at the centers of your forehead and chin. Lindsay used Rouge Bunny Rouge Sea of Showers. "If the highlighter doesn't totally blend into the concealer, pat it into your skin using your clean fingertips," Cosenza adds.

4. Boost the effect. Layer on a cream or powder highlighter over your cheekbones. Lindsay used Josie Maran Argan Color Stick in "Twinkle."

Finally, swipe a pink lipstick with gold tones in it, like Estèe Lauder Pure Color Crystal Lipstick in "Lavish Pink," and then go and pin, Instagram, and tweet out your gorgeous new look.
