Cosmo chats: Katherine Parkinson

We chat to Whites star Katherine Parkinson.

When did you first realise that you were funny?
When I got laughs doing Greek tragedy. Not deliberately.

It must be difficult to stand out on the comedy scene in Britain – how did you manage to do it?
Red hair.

What was your reaction when you first saw the script for Whites?
Yes, please.

If you had to describe the show in three words, what would they be?
Witty, warm, culinary.

A lot of female actresses in Hollywood argue that there aren’t enough good comedic roles for women. That doesn’t seem to be the case in the UK – why do you think that is?
I think humour is prized very highly in Britain and all of the actresses held in highest esteem seem to have comedic pedigree – Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Brenda Blethyn, Julie Walters. I feel lucky to be working in Britain with such role models.

Whites is out now on DVD.
