The Coolest Job Ever: Meet Melissa Rosenfield, "Director of Vibe"

Melissa Rosenfield has one of the coolest jobs you've never heard of, but there's a reason for that.

"The job was created by me and my former boss," says the Director of Vibe for the Viceroy Hotel in Anguilla.

That's not Rosenfield's nickname: That's her formal title.

"You can imagine how many people don't believe it's my job title," she laughs. "I hand out more business cards just so people can see it."

Rosenfield has been the Director of Vibe and VIP Services for Viceroy Anguilla, a high-end luxury resort on the Caribbean island, since 2011. She says the role was originally supposed to be a six-month gig but escalated into a (kick-ass) full-time job.

"I'm the social director, the party planner, the camp counselor and the good-time Charlie. I plan all programming and handle all celebrities and VIPs and just manage the 'cool factor' there," she explains. "The original job description was just like, 'make sure the music and lighting is cool.'"

Rosenfield was first asked to live in the hotel for six months, and when handed an extended gig, would live in Anguilla for six months at a time, and spend her summers back in the U.S, traveling between Los Angeles and New York City. Now that she works with other hotels within the Viceroy chain as well, she commutes back and forth between Anguilla. Rough life!

"Anguilla is amazing. It's such a beautiful island," Rosenfield says.

As for the other perks for being the Director of Vibe, Rosenfield gets to mingle with a quite a few big names.

"I just helped [designer] Prabal Gurung plan a trip," she says. "I've done boat tours for celebrities, then got on a plane with John Galliano."

But she never knows what will be asked of her: "I've planned barbecues last-minute where they've been like: 'I'd like to have a barbecue on the beach with a 12-piece reggae band.'"

When she's not "on island," Rosenfield can be found trying out different menus from top chefs, and discovering the hottest trend in workout classes—whatever is the coolest and latest thing to bring to guests of the Viceroy Anguilla. "You can't pull the wool over the guests' eyes," she says. "They are paying for the best; The newest of what's out there."

So how did she land a such a killer, one-off position? It wasn't a clear cut path to vibe-ing for Rosenfield.

She jumped around snatching up experience with positions in marketing and public relations in both New York and Los Angeles before the Viceroy Hotels and Resorts approached her with the position. When presented with the opportunity, she jumped at it immediately.

And as for her future, "I think as the brand continues to grow, I'd like to grow with it," she says. "Right now, it's fun. I don't think there are many companies I can be on the beach in Anguilla one week and be in four different fitness classes the next."

We can't think of any, either.

Aww Hell Nah: Steel Magnolias Director Was Mean to Julia Roberts

As if the movie itself wasn’t dramatic (and highly weepy) enough, apparently behind-the-scenes of Steel Magnolias was one Jersey Shore-style shitshow. Julia Roberts, who was just a 21-year-old rookie actress back in 1989, was being mercilessly bullied by director Herbert Ross, bringing her to tears on the regular.

According to Us Weekly, at this week's Target Presents AFI Night at the Movies in Hollywood, Sally Field said that Ross "did pick on one of us severely. He never told me I couldn't act...He went after Julia with a vengeance. This was pretty much her first big film." Shirley MacLaine, a.k.a Weezer, another one of the movie’s stars, said that Roberts would be in tears and "would come to my house every night and say, 'I think I'm terrible. What am I doing?'”

Roberts got her revenge. See: Pretty Woman, Oscar for Erin Brokovich, etc. Who’s the national treasure now, Ross? I really wanted to beat up this Ross character until I found out he died in 2001. Oops.

The inspiring thing is that just the way the women banded together in the movie, they did the same thing in real life! When Ross would harass the actresses and tell them they had no talent, they would all get together and support each other. Shirley MacLaine says, “We stayed friends after the movie. We never went to the director's funeral..."

Yeah, exactly.

Meet Our New Fashion Director: Aya Kanai

In case you didn't know, we recently hired a new fashion director: Aya Kanai, who's fierce and just as fiercely-dressed.

And we couldn't wait another second to introduce her to you!

Here's the 411: Aya was born and raised in New York City and graduated from Oberlin College, where she received a degree in Visual Art.

For the past ten years, she's been contributing to the contemporary fashion industry in print editorial, celebrity dressing, online retail, and advertising. Her past nine to fives have included: Senior fashion editor at Teen Vogue magazine and fashion director at Nylon magazine; head stylist at shopbop.com; dressing celebrities such as Ashley Olsen, Jennifer Lawrence, Michelle Williams, Kirsten Dunst, Sienna Miller, and Kirsten Stewart; and styling advertising campaigns for global brands such as Microsoft, Cole Haan, Adidas, Converse for Target, Virgin Mobile and Forever21. Needless to say, she's got some stellar experience.

Okay, now for the highly-anticipated Q&A:

Your signature style is?: "Crisp graphic prints, black and white with colorful accents, military-inspired details, and a love of shoes and bags. It's not a signature look [per se], but those are some of the wardrobe elements that I am always drawn to."

If you could only wear one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?: "[My] Balenciaga leather jacket. It's the most perfect item I own."

What was the major fashion moment of your life?: "Attending the Alexander McQueen show in Paris. There are very few events in your life that you can describe as 'magic,' and this was one of them.

When it comes to photoshoots, when I was starting out as a stylist, I had the opportunity to dress Ashley Olsen for an editorial piece, right as she was starting The Row. We talked a lot about the 't-shirt line' (as she called it) that she and her sister were starting. It was inspiring to talk to a young woman who was clearly very clever and business-minded. She knows exactly what she liked and did not like—she has a distinct point of view."

What's your fashion game plan for the new Cosmo?: "My deepest wish for the pages of our magazine is to show our reader what's next in fashion and how to wear it. I plan to inspire her to shop, to dream, and to always remember that fashion, at its best, is about bringing fun, color, and expression into each day of your life."

What's your dream fashion shoot entail?: "There are too many dream photo shoots to name just one, but I will say overall that I want our reader to feel connected to each fashion story we do. I want her to feel that she can see a piece of her best self in our pages. This means we must find inspiring and different people to feature in our pages. Women with cool jobs and careers, students in college, people to inspire, and people to represent the fun of fashion in a variety of different ways."

Stilettos, sneakers, flats…what's your go-to shoe?: "I love the ChloĆ© studded ankle boots, the Tabitha Simmons Creeper ankle boots, and Chanel smoking slippers."

What do you think is a major fashion faux paus?: "Fashion victimhood. Learning about trends is for the purpose and joy of cherry-picking what works for your body, your style, and your life—not for being a slave to consumer culture."

What are you inspired by: "Experimental puppet theater, making quilts, and vintage cars."

Who's your favorite designer?: "[That's] an impossible question."

Who's your celebrity crush?: "Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert."

Okay, lastly, what five spring staples should every girl own right this minute?

1. A white moto jacket.

2. Smoking slippers.

3. 3.1 Phillip Lim "I Heart Nueva York" graphic muscle t-shirt.

4. Leather shorts.

5. A backpack for bike riding.

Follow Aya on Twitter, and then pick up Cosmo mag to see her make fashion magic!

Cosmo's Beauty Director Leah Wyar Gets Bangs

We're always down for a makeover, so when Cosmo's Beauty Director Leah Wyar told us she wanted to switch up her hairstyle and get bangs, we had to go along for the ride.

We headed to Sally Hershberger's downtown salon to meet up with her stylist Matt Fugate—and the hair games began. Before the first cut, Leah told us that she was most nervous about how she was going to style her bangs everyday since they're usually high-maintenance.

So what motivated her to make a bold move? "I feel like I've had the same haircut for a year and Matt and I have been working really hard to get it to a place that I love, but now I'm a little bored with it. And while I'd love to go for a more dramatic look—I'm obsessed with Miley's current haircut—I don't want to lose any length. So by adding bangs, I feel like I can get an entirely different look but still keep my hair long. Plus, since everyone seems to be getting bangs like Kim Kardashian and Michelle Obama, it gave me that push to want to go for it."

In the chair, Leah's last words before the first big cut were, "Before, my hair was crazily layered and now it's more one-length with blunt ends and the texture is good, so we don't want to change that, we just want to enhance my haircut with blunt bangs. Plus, there is a huge trend right now in hair that's more wide than it is sleek and straight, so we're going for that effect."

Matt worked his magic and cut an edgy fringe that was customized to frame her face. And since she voiced that she was nervous about styling them, especially since she has a cowlick that's hard to tame, he gave us pearls of hair wisdom along the way, including:

- "Never apply product to your bangs—it makes your forehead break out and your fringe get greasier faster."

- "To style your bangs, use the roundedness of your forehead, instead of a round brush, and gently pull downward on your ends while your dryer is on low air and high heat. This will give you a sleek, flat finish instead of tell-tale 80's bangs. The same tecnique also helps breakdown annoying cowlicks. Then, after they're dry, hold your hand on the root of your bangs and blow the ends to the left and right for added texture and movement."

- "If you don't have time to use your blow dryer to style your bangs, throw on your winter hat, which will smash your bangs down against your forehead, again allowing the roundedness of it to shape them."

A few other cool things we learned from Matt about bangs: "Not only do they make you look more badass and edgy, but they also instantly make your eyes the focal point. Plus, they make you look younger!" Leah's take: "It's natural botox, in my opinion!"

So, what do you think of Leah's new fringe? And has she inspired you to take the blunt bang plunge?
