New Study Shows Major Differences Between Girls' and Guys' Brains

There's been an ongoing, battle-of-the-sexes debate for years (and probably centuries) about who's got better brains, men or women. And some recent research seems to have finally put this question to rest—we both do.

Turns out that men and women's brains are so different that it's almost like comparing apples to oranges, according to various studies that have examined the differences between both genders' thinking caps.

For example, men's brains are about 8-to-10 percent larger than women's, which might seem to indicate that guys have the cranial upper hand. But! After looking at 26,000 brain scans, one neuroscientist found that women had increased activity in 112 of the 128 regions of the brain he measured.

The reason? The male brain is much quieter in how it processes information, while the female brain is firing all the time. However, just because our brains are more active, that doesn't mean our brains are better—in fact, so much activity actually makes us three times as prone to migraines as guys are.

Other fun tidbits on brain differences by gender include the fact that women feel more pain and are more sensitive to touch than men are, and that while stress makes women want to talk things out, feeling anxious makes dudes angry. (Good to know when you or your man comes home after a particularly bad day at the office.)

The bottom line, according to various studies and scientists, is this: Men and women are equal when it comes to our brains, we're just wired really differently.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place

"Where did my daughter go?" my mom joked as I climbed into her car on Christmas Eve morning.

"It's only five pounds mom." That's how much I'd lost since I started running, but it still thrilled me every time I pulled on my old jeans to find that they hung low on my hips.

"It's not about the pounds, it's about the inches! You look teeny-tiny." A little bit of concern tinged her voice. "You're not going to get carried away like that time in—"

"Mom, no," I said, cutting her off. I knew she was referring to senior prom, when admittedly, I went overboard trying to lose a few pounds. "I eat so much, you'll see tonight."

"Okay, okay." She hung a left and started towards the house. "So how are your friends. Nina? Ashley?" A pause. "Luke?"

"Well, mom, you're never going to believe it but your little plan to get Luke and I back together totally backfired. He's dating Ashley now."

"Ashley!" My mom turned to me her eyes wide.

"Mom! Eyes on the road."

"Sorry."

"Yeah, I think they really like each other."

"And that doesn't, um." My mom cleared her throat. "Bother you?"

"That ship has sailed. Plus, I'm dating someone from my running group."

"You are? Sweetheart, I feel so out of it! Tell me everything."

I played with the bracelet Justin had gotten me as I brought my mom up to speed.

"When can you two come over for dinner?" my mom asked as soon as I'd finished.

"Too soon," I laughed. "But if things keep going the way they are, soon, I promise."

We pulled up to the house and my mom turned the engine off. After I'd dropped my stuff in my room, I was put to work—chopping, polishing, and vacuuming. We were having family and some of my parents' friends over for dinner. My cousins, Steve and Erica, were coming as well. It was a tradition to head into town after dinner and have mulled wine at this one Irish pub where everyone I ever went to high school would be present. Meaning, even though I was thisclose to having a real, live boyfriend, I still had to look good.

A few hours later, Steve, Erica, and I pulled up to the Mulgannan's Tavern in our Christmas Eve best.

"Josie, isn't that Luke's car?" Erica pointed to a beat up maroon jeep.

"It is." Even though Ashley had invited Luke home with her for Christmas, he decided to go to New Jersey and see his mom.

We walked into the bar and I was immediately enveloped by a group of girls who were a year ahead of me in high school. I chatted with them for a little bit before I made my way up to the bar. As I'd squeezed my way to the front, I suddenly spotted Luke....he was sitting in a chair with a girl I didn't recognize in his lap. I stopped dead in my tracks.

"Are you in line?" some guy behind me asked, impatiently.

"You go," I waved my hand absentmindedly at him. The lap sitter leaned back and turned her head in Luke's direction, he leaned in, and they kissed. I audibly gasped.

"Josie!" My cousin, Steve, was at the end of the bar closest to Luke, screaming my name. Luke jerked his head away from the girl and scanned the crowd, until his eyes settled on me. I held his gaze, accusingly.

Luke whispered something in the lap-sitter's ear and she stood up so Luke could make his way over to me.

"Hey," Luke said. His cheeks were flushed.

"Um, hey yourself," I said, coldly.

"What's with the 'tude?" Luke laughed.

"What's with the rando in your crotch?"

Luke laughed again and shook his head. "Jos, Ashley isn't, like, my girlfriend."

"Does Ashley know that?"

Luke shrugged. "I guess."

"You guess?" I shook my head. "You know I'm going to tell her about this."

"Of course you're going to. You love to stir the pot."

"I do not!"

"Okay, Josie," Luke smiled sarcastically and stepped back. "Okay." Then he turned and walked away.

Luke's words stuck with me all night. If I tell Ashley, am I doing it because I'm being a good friend? Or is it because deep down I don't want to see this not work out?
