Lock up your men, the beautiful Jordana Brewster is back on your TV screens in the fifth instalment of The Fast and the Furious: Fast Five. We caught up with the sexy star to talk boys, cars and find out what it’s like to lock lips with Paul Walker.
Your mother is a former Brazilian swimsuit model – did you ever think about modelling as a career or were you more drawn to acting?
No, I was always more into acting. I think there’s too much pressure in the modelling industry – I prefer getting lost in a role and really immersing yourself in something like a horror or action film.
Your most famous character to date is Vin Diesel’s sister Mia Torreto in The Fast and the Furious franchise. Did you ever think the movies were going to be so successful?
No, I had no idea; none of us did! I mean, I always knew they were great films, but it’s so good to how they’ve really taken off and have such a large fan-base now. It’s great to play Mia and watch her change and grow up as the film series progresses.
You took a break during the second and third films. What made you sign on for the fourth and fifth sequels?
I really wanted to work with the [director] Justin Lin again – I really like what he’s done with the story and his direction. And, of course, I jumped at the chance to work with Vin Diesel and Paul Walker and the rest of the cast and crew again. It was like a reunion of sorts and great to be back with all the boys again. We started in Puerto Rico and then moved on to Atlanta so it was a lot of fun to travel around with everyone.
In the fifth film, Fast Five, you’re one of the only girls in a predominately all-male cast. Do the boys look after you?
Yes, definitely! We’ve worked enough together over the years for it to be really comfortable and easy between us all – which is always good! We started filming in Puerto Rico before moving to Atlanta, so it was fun to travel with everyone again.
Do you have to train or work out a lot for the roles?
I don’t work out specifically, but I try to eat healthily and get in some regular exercise. I don’t actually drive a stick [manual] – Justin really wanted me to do some of my own driving scenes, so I had one lesson in a deserted car park but that didn’t go down so well [laughs].
And what kind of car do you drive normally?
I drive a big Range Rover and I love it – but I’m not that great of a driver, I blame it on living in LA!
Now what’s your favourite scene to shoot – action scenes or the love ones with Paul Walker?
Ooh, that’s a hard one… but I’m going to say the love scenes with Paul! It’s really easy between us – we’re almost feel like an old married couple because we’ve known each other for so long.
And – it’s the question every girl wants to know – what’s it like to kiss Paul Walker?
Girls, I’ve got to say… [laughs] Paul’s a really, really great kisser. It’s fun to do those scenes but a little strange at the same time because we’re such good friends! Paul’s a really sweet, mellow guy; just really down-to-earth and really lovely!
Fast Five ends in a bit of a cliff-hanger – is there going to be a sixth film?
There’s something in the works. I’m looking forward to working with Michelle Rodriguez again – she brings so much to the series.
You’re also considered a bit of a sex symbol – were you popular with boys growing up?
No, not really – I went to a strict Catholic all-girls school so I never had that much to do with boys while I was growing up. And now I’m happily married, so that’s all off the cards!
And you’ve got the beauty and the brains, graduating from Yale in 2003. What made you decide to go to university?
I’ve always been interested in learning and studying so I decided to get my B.A. in English. I’ve always loved reading and writing and wanted to have some more experience and a degree under my belt. I didn’t want to have to rely on just acting for the rest of my life.
What’s up next for you?
I’m filming a remake of Dallas with Jesse Metcalfe, Josh Henderson, Brenda Strong and Larry Hagman. I’m playing Elena, who is the daughter of the Ewing ranch cook. It’s so much fun and it’s great to be a part of such an iconic series!
Fast Five is available on DVD and Blu-Ray now.
