With top dance hits we all know and adore, including “Don’t Hold Back”, “Are You With Me” and “Hello” – The Potbelleez are one hard to miss group. Cosmo caught up with their female vocalist Blu, backstage of Usher’s OMG Tour, to chat about their latest career highlight, as a supporting act for one of the world’s biggest performers.
How has the tour been so far?
It’s been really fun. It’s been a big step up doing night-after-night, so that’s been an experience. Just being on a big tour with a huge crew and everything that goes along with it, has been really good. It’s been interesting for us to be the little guys for once! Usher has been so lovely.
So, it’s been great working with him?
It’s been awesome. We have met him a few times and he’s been really chilled. He’s watched us sound check a couple of times and he watched our set in Brisbane.
How is a tour like this different to your usual club tours, or festival gigs?
Festivals are just another world, there are so many bands, so many people, so many different stages. But on this tour, it’s night-after-night, that big crowd, big stadium - every night. It’s interesting; because it’s a different demographic compared to the audience we’re used to performing to. Even though we are a commercial band, we come from underground club music, so even when we play the big festivals, it’s that type of music - because it’s the clubbers that go. Whereas this is a much wider demographic – it’s more R’n’B and pop lovers, so we’re in a great position to be the support because we’re a commercial band – we’re exposed to people who know the songs but probably don’t know it’s us. It’s perfect.
What preparation did you do for this tour?
We had to change our sets totally - we had to cut some songs down for the 20 minute set, so we could get in the five songs we really wanted. We’ve played around with that a bit and played with our big radio singles – we’ve done a lot of preparation.
What’s next for The Potbelleez?
Next up is the release of our new album Destination Now, and more touring!
Destination Now is out May 27. You can buy it here.
