Beauty or Bullsh*t? Lip-Plumping Suction Cup

Want Angelina Jolie-esque lips like this? You might just be able to get them with this little gadget below: the Fullips Lip Enhancer ($20, fullips.com). I decided to be your beauty guinea pig and see if it really works.

Here's how it went down: The Fulllips Lip Enhancer was sent to me at Cosmo recently and it instantly caught my attention. I had NO clue what it was or what is was about to do for my lips, but I had to find out.

So, I took it for a test drive. The instructions were as follows:

Step 1:  Lightly exfoliate your lips and the surrounding area first, using a soft washcloth or soft toothbrush to help achieve fuller results. Next, wet the area around your mouth with water. (This moisture is not necessary, but may help establish tighter suction which they say is the key to a good result.)

Step 2:  Position the Fullips enhancer over your mouth and lip area, hold it in place while applying some pressure, and suck in short puffs of air until a solid suction is established. You should feel a gentle pulling — this is normal/what is supposed to be happening.

Step 3:  Suction your lips in 15 to 30 second increments. Then use your finger to help break suction.

Step 4:  Repeat step 3 until desired fullness is reached, and then apply your lip cosmetics as usual.

After completing all of the steps successfully, I looked in the mirror and I have to say that this little contraption actually did make my lips look a bit larger. I wasn't completely surprised; it worked because the act of suctioning draws blood to your lips, enlarging them temporarily.

Before and After

The verdict: While the results only lasted about two hours, the effects of it were pretty cool. I just don't know if I'd actually spend $20 on it for short-lived results.

Looks like I'll be faking fuller lips until further notice.

The Product: The Exfolimate, $30 from drugstore.com, looks like a weapon. But it's not! It's an exfoliating tool.

The Promise: These little blade-like devices are actually supposed to help you exfoliate dead skin cells on your face and body, leaving you with smoother skin. Apparently the stainless steel metal plates — don't worry, they're not sharp enough to cut you — have micro-grooves along one side that are ridged enough to lift and remove unwanted dead skin cells that can cause scaly skin and free ingrown hairs that can clog your pores.

The Method: I took them for a test run mid-shower, since that's what the instructions on the packaging said to do — I essentially was "shaving" my face and body; however, I wasn't actually removing any hair, since these tools obviously these aren't razors (the motion is similar to shaving your legs). I used the rougher side to lightly slough off dry, flaky skin, while applying slight pressure at a 90-degree angle. Overall, I was fine when I ran the Exfolimate over my arms, torso, and chest, and legs, but I definitely felt like I had to be more careful when I switched it up and used the face blade to do my neck, cheeks, forehead, etc.

The Verdict: When I was done showering and had towel-dried off, my skin felt like a freaking baby's ass — so soft!

I was honestly so impressed and surprised by this excellent little exfoliator, especially because it didn't require me to scrub away at my skin to get velvety-soft results. I immediately thought this would be the perfect pre-spray tan tool, as the packaging recommends. I'm kind of obsessed.

The Exfolimate totally isn't bullshit, it's defintely a beautiful thing!

Looks like my go-to facial and body scrub just got replaced.

Beauty or Bullsh*t? Gigantic Paraffin Wax Gloves

Ignore my lopsided top knot for one second, and instead focus on the gigantic paraffin wax gloves I'm wearing.

These babies landed on my desk recently for review and were intriguing to me — especially since my hands have been dry as shit lately with the weather dropping to ungoldy temperatures — so I took them for a test drive to see if they'd actually work.

Here's the verdict: after popping both gloves in the microwave to heat up and melt the multitude of paraffin waxes, coconut oil, and lavender oil each contain, I waited until the heart on the front of the glove was black, not red (an indicator that it's too hot to put your pretty little hands in), and then I slit the top of the glove with scissors, slipped my hands in each of them, and had a co-worker tighten the velcro to keep the wax from seeping out. I officially felt somewhat like Edward Scissorhands.

The instructions said to leave the gloves on for 15 minutes, so I did. At first the wax was pretty hot, but the temperature quickly lowered and I could feel the wax-slash-oil blend hardening around my hands. It felt weird, but also kind of cool.

When I finally removed each glove at the sink, my hands look really prune-y, as if I'd been in the bathtub too long. And since that's a sign of over-hydration, I knew my hands were definitely moisturized, but I wasn't sure how smooth they were going to feel. I wanted baby's-ass kind of soft, but after I washed and dried my hands to get the excess oil off, they didn't feel Gerber baby-like — instead, they felt soft-ish, but more similar to how they felt before I started. #Fail.

The packaging says to repeat this process weekly, and since you can use each glove four times, the month supply of at-home paraffin wax ($40; glovetreat.com) might just do the job for you — like I said, my hands did feel oiled up and somewhat moisturized. However, in my opinion, it didn't provide the longer-lasting hydration that my hands need.

Looks like I'm sticking to my trusty bottle of Kora Organics by Miranda Kerr Enriched Body Lotion.
