Joan Rivers Has Been Rushed to the Hospital

Joan Rivers has reportedly had a medical emergency, according to TMZ.

The comedian was having surgery on her vocal cords in a clinic when she stopped breathing and was rushed to Mount Sinai hospital in New York City. Her daughter Melissa, who has collaborated with the comedian during red-carpet coverage and on a reality show, is reportedly on her way to New York.

Rivers, 81, had been making the media rounds to promote her latest book, Diary of a Mad Diva, and officiated a same-sex wedding just last week.And this week, she taped a special 90-minute edition of Fashion Police to dissect the style at the VMAs and the Emmys.

The press office at Mount Sinai hospital couldn't immediately comment to CBS News.

Update, 12 p.m. EST: The NYPD has reportedly told TMZ that Rivers is in critical condition.

Update, 12:50 p.m. EST: E! News reports her condition has been upgraded to stable.

Update, 5:50 p.m. EST: According to the Daily News, Rivers has been placed in a medically induced coma. Doctors hope to bring her out of the coma this weekend in order to assess any damage caused when she went into cardiac and respiratory arrest earlier today.

Update, 9:30 PM EST: Melissa Rivers has issued a statement regarding her mother's health.

"I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support for my mother. She is resting comfortably and is with our family. We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers."
